Ahh, those were the days. Back in the 500cc 2-stroke era, you had to be a man to ride those beastly machines. When that back end stepped out it was pretty much over.
wish doohan came back again after his final big crash, would have been awesome to see doohan vs rossi on the 500s, i would've put money on doohan ;) but i can imagine there would have been some really close races :) he is and always will be one of the greatest legends of motorcycling
No human in the history of sport (unless it was some gladiator in Rome) has endured such horrific and frightening injuries, recovered, and then not given a fuck, then gone on to win, and win, and then win again, culminating in 5 consecutive world championships. Rossi didn't have to stay ahead of fags trying to copy his perfect line qualifying laps and if Rossi endured the injuries Doohan did, he'd be in rehab crying for the rest of his life. I'm not even Aussie but Doohan is a freak of nature
Mick Doohan is arguably the best GP racer ever. Riding the totally vicious NSR 500 with a thumb brake and kicking everyones ass. Rossi is great but the turf is a lot different now than it was then. I'd like to see a young Doohan on a modern GP bike. Just for funsies to see what would happen. Or K Roberts or F Spencer. That would be something to see I think. Peace out.
doohan wouldn't have won on these bikes. First off, he was too big, and second with all of the electronics and emphasis on corner-speed, doohan wouldn't have been able to do anything. He won with pure balls, and thats something thats rare in the sport these days. I think the real question is how would these midgets do against doohan on an NSR 500. My honest opinion is that Rossi would have given him a good race, and possibly nicky hayden because of his dirt track background
@socialspasmdrums I'm not after an argument here but how can Doohan be too big to win on modern bikes when Rossi who is bigger has already won so many times. Spies & Simoncelli are almost there when they get the right bikes and lets not forget Sete Gibernau. As for Hayden, nice guy had a consistent year in 2006 but was & never will rival Rossi or ever have been for Doohan and the results of each prove this. If Rossi's M1 & tyres been competitive from start Nicky would'nt have been close
Spies and Simoncelli I agree could be up there, but for me its too soon to tell. Im basing a lot of my opinion on Hayden from when he beat Matt Mladin in AMA superbike as a teenager. However, Sete Gibernau no way. Rossi just physiologically destroyed him at Jerez, so in my book he's out. Motorcycle racing isn't only physically tough, but you have to be mentally tough as well
@socialspasmdrums Yeah no worries you wont get any abuse from me unlike alot of comments on here lol!
I think you missed what I was trying to say. In ur previous post u said Doohan would not be able to win on modern bikes due to him being to physically big but I was merely pointing out that larger riders I mentioned have already won on them and aside from riding ability Mick was very strong mentally. He had to develop a new riding style after his massive crash.
@socialspasmdrums Doohan only rode what he was given... Doohan wouldn't have been able to do anything with electronics and modern tires? I disagree. All of the top european guys at the end of Doohan's era were high cornering speed style champions out of the 250cc ranks... Biaggi is the first to come to mind, but also Kocinski before him. The truth is Doohan beat them all and adapted to his competition and machinery incredibly well: Big bang engines, screamer engines, american legends...
Always reminded me of the Mad Max character, giant of the sport, probably the most courageous man ever to race a 500, he 'should' have lost his leg in '92 and literally risked his life to keep the leg and go back racing.
@BringBack500s, yeah I was a huge Doohan fan back in the day, and he definitely reminded me a bit of Mad Max (looked like him for sure). I hope someone posts the gnarly save Mick made at Mugello in 1993 at the San Marino GP. He had a hectic high-side and he kept on the bike, and won the damn race!
Hailwood is probably the best ever, and Ago and Rossi are right up there, but Doohan was always my guy when I was following it closely and able to get to the track as a young 'un.

Mick Doohan was the rpevious King of Grand Prix... So is Rossi up to this day... To be honest, I think Stoner could do GREAT things in the future.
