i love larsen's play, and i'm addicted to b3 openings, but f4 here was just really sketchy. i don't think that would have worked even in blitz and really he needed to get his pieces coordinated.
Larsen - Spassky - a wonderful game. Who was the commentator? I love both of these players. Spassky's style was a beautiful blend of classical principles and extreme forcefulness; even recently he played a game where he just blew Korchnoi off the board, not unlike this game. But I love Larsen, one of the most creative and entertaining players ever and also said to be a phenomenal endgame player. I have an autographed copy of his best games collection.
@Peterh588 man you are lucky to have an autographed copy... I just started reading up on him because I read about Larsen's b3 opening in a book recently and i've started playing it a lot. I just found out he passed away in september... the same thing happened to me with George Carlin, I didn't become familiar with his comedic genius until right after he died in 2008.
thank you for posting this. Spassky was a phenomenal champion. Fischer said that spassky was the best opponent he ever played. unfortunately sapssky is too often remembered for having lost his title to fischer, and not enough attention is paid to how he because world champion in the first place.
rare to get such clear cut commentry, respect for that.. Larsen is my favourite player, and I love his opening, but after about move 5 in this game it was clearly curtains agains an opponent like Spassky
I'm not certain, I'll have to check the DVD but I think this game was in GM Ray Keene's best 12 games of all time, in his 'Duels of the Mind' series (a DVD well worth having).
I'm not very keen on the Larsen opening, and he lost a lot of games trying to perfect it - however to his credit he did eventually work out all the chinks in its armour and produced a huge winning streak with it.
Im danish, so I know Bent Larsen pretty good, and he once said: I just play the Larsen Opening and get an advantage, but anyone else needs to fight for an advantage from the first move with this opening.
@furrer08 of course I'm not a grandmaster, and niether are the people that I play against, I find that this opening is so rare and unexpected that many people simply don't know how to properly respond to it.... but I agree, with 1.b3 you have to fight hard to not be overrun in the center, it has happened to me quite a number of times playing this opening......
another good would be : before black sacrafices the rock black sacrafice the bishop with Bxe3 with normaly take the bishop with the pawn, oppening the complete D file for the black rock, then next move balck sacrafice the rook and then he moves the pawn foward and this time if the with rock goes on G1 stopping the pawn the queen comes for a checkmate on H4, very well played by borris anyway.
with should have put the rock on G1, because after the Qh4 Kd1 Qh1 with plays Qc3, then black takes the rock Qxg1+ Kc2 then black has to move the queen to qet promote it leads to Qh1 and with can play Kb3 to attacke the queen, it still looks pretty bad for with, but he can survive :-)
rook sac ... holy cow !! ...

Spassky was no woodpusher. Larsen was one of the most creative thinkers in his day. But Fischer cleaned their clocks.

sometimes it was like Larsen didn't respect the strength of his opponents. Still he was a remarkable player
