I have a boxer dog, neither cropped and docked. The ears are fine. But her tail destroys EVERYTHING. I don't think she even knows it's there... At least until she runs under an electric fence
@JohnnyH2389 I understand the purpose of cropping the tail after having seen how much damage an uncropped boxer tail can do. The ears don't make sense unless you're going to show the dog. They hate it and there's really no practical purpose to it.

@Trident7830 that's just mean, having tail's and ears cut off is cruel, I can understand if it's due to a medical problem ( or with working dog's running through brambles all day long) but just for a trend? the ears and tail give so many signals about what mood the dog is in and I know the general body language also does this but its a lot easier to read a dog that has them, dog's also read through body language, a lot of dog's have a problem with my girl who's tail is docked (friendly rescue),
@StephanBotha Actually, it's usally healed up in a week, max, and is actually *better* for the dog in a lot of cases. I had mine done because he was getting ear infections. Having the air flow better prevented him from ever getting them again.

I have had all my dobies ears cropped since and have never had the ear infection problem again. Would I crop them if I lived in a track home where they were inside most of the time? Probably not. There wouldn't be a need to because they wouldn't have daily access to a pond and everything my dogs have now. I think both boxers and dobies look great with either ear. It isn't something that hurts them later in life, but for a few weeks. Chronic ear infections, however pain them for a lifetime.
Another dobie baby. Tory (Tornado) taught the pup, Jack, the same love of mud and water that she had and although I was determined to keep their ears clean and dry every day to prevent Jack from developing the same infections as Tory, he had to be put on medication too. The moisture was too deep for me to safely clean and I couldn't take them to the vet every day. When I got another after Tory passed away, I decided to crop. Because of the better air flow, Xena never developed ear infections...
I have always gotten my dogs' ears cropped for looks, but for health. My first dobie was floppy eared and because she was in the water all the time, then in the dirt, constantly getting dirty (she loved to roam our property. Mud puddles were her favorite) she developed nasty ear infections. She had to be put on medication. It was caused by her ears not drying well enough inside due to poor air circulation. And yes, her ears were regularly cleaned. She started getting older and we got a pup....
@shamuluva You are a complete moron. The ears are cropped to give a more menacing appearance as boxers were used as guard dogs and doberman were bred for personal protection. The cropping of their ears actually increases the likelyhood of infection because they are unprotected from debris and the elements. I'm sure if any of you would have met me and my babies prior to posting any negative comments, you would have held your tongue. No one Ive ever known can contest how much I loved those dogs and how much they loved me.
ear cropping is something that was done in the German concentration camps as it made the dogs appear more aggressive to the prisoners they had in there... here in Australia it is illegal to crop a dogs ears & it is also illegal to dock their tails (which when it comes to boxers is a shame as they really don't have the nicest looking tales) only certain registered breeders are allowed to have tails docked... love Lexi & love boxers :)

@candyfloss362 I am not denying that cropping the ears is painful. I was a vet tech for 2.5 years and saw many ear crops. It is obviously very painful for the first two weeks of healing time. Don't misinterpret this, but dogs live in the moment. They don't worry about the past or future; therefore, when you see a dog walking down the street with it's ears cropped I would bet money on it that he/she is not thinking, "gee, I really hate that my owner did this to my ears!"

The ear crop was my ex's, boyfriend at the time, idea. Please don't misunderstand. Lexi and Niki are fine. They are healthy and happy. I don't regret the decision to get their ears cropped. They are still the same sweet, adorable, and smart dogs irregardless of what was done to their ears. Stop judging because you're only judging yourself.

@bigBrude41 well, it truly depends on their personality. Niki, the one with the floppy ear, was not. She became afraid of men after about 6months of age--even though nothing happened to her. She had a flighty temperment that took me a lot of training to overcome. But anytime anyone would come to the door she'd flee. Lexi on the other hand sounded like a 130lb massive mean dog behind that door--even tho she was a measly 45lbs. haha

They will teach you how to train your dog to be a protector when given the command do. NO it does NOT make your dog mean. If you or anyone in your family is being attacked, this training will teach your dog how to properly take down an intruder. Youtube some videos on it, pretty neat stuff. I'm doing it with my bullmastiff and he loves it!

@bigBrude41 It really depends on the energy level of your boxer. You would need to assess their energy level first. Most Boxers are high or mid high energy; however, I've seen mid energy level Boxers as well. If they are a high to mid high level, they will need a good hr long run twice a day. Part of this can be substituted on a treadmill, but to avoid your dog becoming bored, you will need to take them out and run them switching up the route each week. For a mid level 1hr of running will do

cropping there ears hasnt been AKC standard in along time...people do it for selfish reasons, have you ever talked to a vet about how they crop ears?? It is very painful!! and I had a min-pin and I didnt get his ears cropped either. @midsguy28 the ears were not my idea. My ex, who now owns both my dogs, got them done. And cropping the ears were once a breed standard for Boxers, just like it still is for Min Pins and Schnauzers. But you don't hear anyone screaming cruelty to those breeders....?

I had a boxer named Lexi. We had a giant snow drift in our back yard once and I built a "fort" out of it so that it was kind of like a large tipi with a front and back opening. She thought it was the greatest thing to run through it and jump into the air on her way out. Just thinking about it makes me laugh.

ear cropping is something that was done in the German concentration camps as it made the dogs appear more aggressive to the prisoners they had in there... here in Australia it is illegal to crop a dogs ears & it is also illegal to dock their tails (which when it comes to boxers is a shame as they really don't have the nicest looking tales) only certain registered breeders are allowed to have tails docked... love Lexi & love boxers :)

The only reason that nobody else complains about the other breeds of dogs getting their ears cropped is because those breeds are already ugly.. Boxers are a good looking breed and don't need to be uglied up.

it appears ear cropping is an american past time & done 2 many breeds of dog. i personally thing it looks ugly & un natural. I have a staff & have no intentions of having her ears done In Britain ear cropping is band 4 asthetic reasons if i remember correctly @ Crufts last year that none of the dogs had ear cropping (im sure someone will correct me on that)And Crufts is a major event for dog showing for people around the world. we should appreciate dogs in all breeds for what they are.

@candyfloss362 I am not denying that cropping the ears is painful. I was a vet tech for 2.5 years and saw many ear crops. It is obviously very painful for the first two weeks of healing time. Don't misinterpret this, but dogs live in the moment. They don't worry about the past or future; therefore, when you see a dog walking down the street with it's ears cropped I would bet money on it that he/she is not thinking, "gee, I really hate that my owner did this to my ears!"

@candyfloss362 If you would have read my other comments, you would understand that I never once gave the excuse that Lexi or Niki was a working dog. The ear crop was my ex's, boyfriend at the time, idea. Please don't misunderstand. Lexi and Niki are fine. They are healthy and happy. I don't regret the decision to get their ears cropped. They are still the same sweet, adorable, and smart dogs irregardless of what was done to their ears. Stop judging because you're only judging yourself.

Would I ever do it again? Of course not. Its a complete waste of money. All I'm saying is you need to take a chill pill on the judgements. @bigBrude41 well, it truly depends on their personality. Niki, the one with the floppy ear, was not. She became afraid of men after about 6months of age--even though nothing happened to her. She had a flighty temperment that took me a lot of training to overcome. But anytime anyone would come to the door she'd flee. Lexi on the other hand sounded like a 130lb massive mean dog behind that door--even tho she was a measly 45lbs. haha

@bigBrude41 I would suggest, if you get a boxer, finding a trainer in your area that does Schutzhund aka German Police Dog Protection Work. They will teach you how to train your dog to be a protector when given the command do. NO it does NOT make your dog mean. If you or anyone in your family is being attacked, this training will teach your dog how to properly take down an intruder. Youtube some videos on it, pretty neat stuff. I'm doing it with my bullmastiff and he loves it!

@bigBrude41 It really depends on the energy level of your boxer. You would need to assess their energy level first. Most Boxers are high or mid high energy; however, I've seen mid energy level Boxers as well. If they are a high to mid high level, they will need a good hr long run twice a day. Part of this can be substituted on a treadmill, but to avoid your dog becoming bored, you will need to take them out and run them switching up the route each week. For a mid level 1hr of running will do

cropping there ears hasnt been AKC standard in along time...people do it for selfish reasons, have you ever talked to a vet about how they crop ears?? It is very painful!! and I had a min-pin and I didnt get his ears cropped either. I have been breeding boxers for along time and I dont know anyone that does that anymore, but your boxers are very beautiful, but there boxers and there always cute!!

@midsguy28 the ears were not my idea. My ex, who now owns both my dogs, got them done. And cropping the ears were once a breed standard for Boxers, just like it still is for Min Pins and Schnauzers. But you don't hear anyone screaming cruelty to those breeders....?

I had a boxer named Lexi. We had a giant snow drift in our back yard once and I built a "fort" out of it so that it was kind of like a large tipi with a front and back opening. She thought it was the greatest thing to run through it and jump into the air on her way out. Just thinking about it makes me laugh.
