This album was originally called "The Shadow Suite" because the record company thought it was too controversial to call it "The Freedom Suite." That company was Prestige Records. It is funny how facts change over time !
thanx 4 this great upload, i literally went out & bought BOTH freedom suite & fly with the wind bcuz the EXACT SAME DAY i saw this ... i am eternally thankful jazzvideoguy ...
Well, I think it's false to say this was the first jazz instrumental piece to act as a piece of social commentary. Look at any of Ellington's major suites from the 40s, or Tone Parallel to Harlem. There were many compositions which dealt with the everyday experience of African-American life.
I consider the achievement of Orrin Keepnews boils down to be that of an 'enabler'. He enabled many to move along their career path to greatness. He reminds me of Leonard Bernstein, as the master conductor, enabling musicians of all stripes to perform at their best and to be brought together to perform and to be encouraged to perform with others. He attracts the best, and the best are attracted to him. Both did this very well indeed--and I for one thank them.
BUY the music of Sonnny Rollins and if you like it maybe you will appriciate stuff like like this, ofcourse it takes a nerd like me to like this! To me it's jazz musical history.
i wanna hear Sonny ...and the others...without the interview and all the shit. Imsorry but cmon man. Love what youre doing here on YT but some of us just wanna hear the music. 5***** anyway.
There are other clips of Sonny on YouTube, just playing. These kinds of short documentaries are not performance videos but tell the story for those who are new to the music.
