i have read ALL these coments but the fact is it wasn't facted i personally wouldn't put my STI through that torture but AWD is VERYNICE!! (like borat). if there is debet in power check with your jeep oowners v-6 is better for off road than a v-8 but here is just what needed to be done then :^) props ....lol i loved the snow on the roof ...it is what made it happen right???:^)LOL
he wasnt stuck bad though, just got stopped moving and once that happens your pooched with all the weight and the tires make little craters, just needed a tug, impressive nontheless though lol
@anooseholay You can't actually put that much power on the road in snowy conditions. Because of limited traction, effective horsepower is brought down to that level. That's why when you're in the snow and ice taking off gently is usually faster than hard launching.
@ph13rwun I never said you could get that much power to the ground in slippery conditions. I was only stating that the WRX STI makes a bit more than 50 WHP is all. I wouldn't try to tow anything out of the snow with my Subaru, it's not what they were designed to do.
@anooseholay I doubt it's laying down close to that. The engine may be capable of producing that sure, but not putting it to the road. Remember the traction coefficient is reduce due to the snow. I don't need to research for this, it'd pretty obvious IMO.
@samnelso Traction in snow has nothing to do with wheel horsepower. The WRX STI puts about 285 horsepower to the wheels. I never said all that power was doing any good in a slippery condition, I only stated the fact that the car puts much more power to the wheels than 50 hp.
@anooseholay But, I said "to the road" in my original post and that is what you DIRECTLY responded to. I'm sure it can put out 285whp, they're powerful cars. Anyway...cheers man.
Yeah, that's not a tow. It's a little help to get the truck moving. Funny video, and sure it's a little impressive too, but I can't really see a Subaru actually towing a semi, esp. not in those conditions.
I'm agree, there is no way 3000 lb car will tow 50 000 -80000 lb truck with very low traction, but it can give a torque, a lot of time when car stuck enough just to push a little bit and car will go. =)
I was towing MB Sprinter to the top of the hill with my FWD Ford Escort 1,6D (40kW) '90. Why? Because Sprinter is RWD and was empty. You don't need great power to tow a big wehicle. But if you have AWD, the range of cars you can help in winter conditions increase so much... It doesn't matter if you have Audi quattro or Subaru - AWD rules :D
Not what you think it is. The idea that the the WRX is "towing" is stupid. The truck was accelerating and only needed a slight nudge to get going *you can hear the trucks motor). Show me a vid where any car that light "tows" that much weight. That cars tires would have spun all day.
Whose idea was it to try this? If the Subie is still in warranty and the dealer sees this all "parts-and-labor" will be out of pocket from now on. I had a similar vehicle, GMC Typhoon 4.3 turbo traction sensor AWD with Getrag center diff. The owner's maunal said that if you hooked a trailer to it warranty was voided.
Ever heard about the contest Strongman ?? Could havepulled tat truck on my own 30yards and with some help by some bystanders we´ve done the same job.Not impressed

tannersk869 1 year ago
@DJKrispyKreme Why, because they're rear wheel drive and suck in snow anyway? The subi was probably putting down a whopping 50hp max to the road.
samnelso 1 year ago
@samnelso The WRX STI is putting down just a tad more power than that. Probably something like 285. Research, then post.

samnelso 1 year ago
@samnelso You could do a little research on how power is measured....it's either at the crank or at the wheels.....not at the road.
Even if there was no traction the same amount of power would be applied as it is at the same rev range with full traction.
Dunno who started all this talk about power anyway....1 strong person can move a semi on flat ground with good traction
