I'm a little confused at the end. What happened with the brain being dropped on the floor? What was that whole misty-like sequence?

I was being a little ambiguous at the end, but my interpretation is that after his brain drops and hits he floor, he experiences a brief period back in his ideal fantasy world before his brain finally dies. (The misty dark stuff.)

The original ending in the comic version had his brain hitting the floor, and then his only thoughts were about football (which was even more obscure.)

You guessed right! ...Solitary Extraction was indeed originally a comic I produced back in 1989 ...Our entire background is in underground comics... we drifted into filmmaking in '99, developing our "motion comic" technique. (All our comics were in B&W originally though.)
