I played drums for them in 1965 for a concert in the Quad Cities, when I was at Augustana College. It was a great experience for a young drummer. Rehearsal went well, and we played a nice show. Their harmonies were wonderful, as was their playing. The only downer was the promoter stiffed me and the bass player...not that I hold a grudge, of course. Still, a nice memory.
In the early 60s I discovered the Bitter End and the Womenfolk. I would drive down from my up-town apartment and sit there with my partners enjoying the music and the ambiance. After awhile I started dating Joyce James who has since passed on, as, regretably, have my partners. I'm now 75 with great memories of the ladies in The Womenfolk. I understand that music tastes change, but thanks to YouTube the meories linger on. What a pleasure and a treasure.

One of the best versions of one of my favorite songs! The Womenfolk have never been released on CD, but I see that Amazon sells their albums in MP3. I'll have to get them! Thanks for sharing one of the best eras of my life.
I played drums for this group for one concert in 1965 in the Quad Cities while I was a college student. Stunning harmony. I still remember playing "Quittin' Time." It's great to hear you womenfolk again! BTW, I never got paid...
While lying in bed last week this song bubbled up in my deepest predawn memories. All I could remember was the first two lines of the chorus and used "find the lyrics" websites to get the source and stop making me crazy. What a joy to hear the actual rendition as even better than remembered! Tight tight harmony and best all a mezmeringly rich bass track. Any body know which one it is?
Great harmony. I used to listen to this group when I was in graduate school and forgot all about them. It brings back old memories ... thanks for posting..
A perfectly marvelous redition of a wonderful Tom Paxton song. Their strong voices, close harmony and perfect blend almost breaks my heart. Thank you, Womenfolk!
Back in the early 60s I stumbled on this group while I changed tv stations and saw them performing on an 'educational' station. I thought they were terrific. Don't know why they disbanded... they were very unique and had an incredible blend. I'm glad I was able to collect at least three of their LPs. Wonder where they all are today?
Dated Joyce James in the 60s, loved them, Bitter End memories, they were the very greatest, I only wish they had not broken up. They have a fabulous My Space page. It's truly sad that people today cannot see a group like this.
@emico2008 - where is that? My father passed a couple years ago and this was his favorite group. Over time all of his albums got too scratched to play and he couldn't find replacements. They were lost to us for decades. I was able to find three albums from some guy in the UK and had them burned on to CDs for him for Christmas. He knew his time was limited and he was thrilled he was to hear them again. Would love to tell the Womenfolk what they meant to my father. Thank you all.
I had the pleasure of seening them twice when I was in college in the mid 60's. Still have their albums and memories of thei harmonies. Thank you for posting this . . . .

I saw the Womenfolk in the early 1960s at the Bitter End on Bleeker St. They were fabulous in that little place.

Wonderful memories! Unkraut1960, any chance you might post my favorite Womenfolk song, "One Man's Hands"?

Like bearphotog I first heard the Womenfolk sing this song on a radio in my college dorm in 1964 -- thanks for the great memories!

Tom Paxton has blessed us with his creation. We are so lucky that the Womenfolk and other artists have seen fit to cover his song.

@talenttrading Judy Collins and Stephen Stills did a joint cover most recently--very sweet, given their history!

I LOVE their music. I can't see why they didn't make it any farther than they did. I do wish that someone would put all of their songs on CD.
norfolk611 3 years ago
But their singles & albums are available as downloads on some of the popular digital music stores.
