I've got to say that as much a great tune I think Birdland is, they're just not playing it with any feeling on here. It's rushed, played too fast and repeating that riff for WAY too long makes it boring.
Do you have the actual song Domino Theory from this concert? Someone had it up for a minute but I've never been able to find it since. That in my opinion is the best jam from this concert.
Used to live in Miami a few (ahem) years back...got to play with Jaco, Othello, Ira Sullivan...lotta stuff around there then...saw WR at the Tampa theater yrs later with Omar and Victor B....joes' monitors went out in the first tune...Wayne and the rhythm section went OFF it was great
Hey ! There is actually harmony, melody, form and not one flying object in your piece! I feel cheated !Actually it's very pleasant to listen to. How come ?
Searchless1 - I had not heard of Zawinul's death until your message here. I very sad day for music, even if his greatest achievements were two decades in the past. It reminds one of the transience of genius and of life. I hope the recordings here - and this is one of the best - are a fitting epitaph for him, though I will not be able to listen to them in the same way in future.
I really enjoy Tangents..doing tribute show on 9.22. "Zawinul died this morning of skin cancer.. innovator, compositional genius and cross-pollinating pioneer. Weather Report led by Joe & Wayne Shorter (& later incl Jaco Pastorius) the most important world jazz fusion group of all time; recorded on 5 Miles Davis albums. innerviews-dot-org/inner/zawinul;" Tangents tribute, 9.22.07 10p-12a [PST] (91.7, kalw-dot-org) Dore Stein,Producer/Host, Sat, 8p-12a [PST] on KALW (91.7, SF) or webcast at KALW
Has anyone noticed how much keyboard dubbing there is on this video...especially on `Birdland` and `Where The Moon Goes`?

Well, actually there is nothing to be blamed for, it's very listenable. I'd rather listen to that than to the 4 helicopters music any time.

You can blame Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter for that.

Zawinuls solo at 3mins is a clear example of how he used to make 'electric' keyboards sound like 'acoustic' instruments. Very inventive !!
