Britain lost most of its Empires' wealth after the 50's, most countries (including Britain) were trying to rebuild after WW2, both Allied and Axis, we were all hit hard.
But we managed to get better, and look where we are today. Ireland didn't even get a scratch on it, and it STILL couldn't lift itself out of poverty. LMFAO! It had to beg to the EU.

Ireland was never a nation until the Britsh turned it into a nation. The problem for the Heroes of The Revolution proclaiming the pluckiness of plucky little Ireland vis-à-vis bully boys Germany and France, is that as soon as Ireland gets itself marginalized or exited from the EU, all of those with skills will be off to the USA, England, Germany, etc. as quickly as possible, and Ireland (ROI) will revert to the quiet times of the 1970s. Ah... the good old days :-)
The EU has all the institutions of a real state... eg.currency (Euro),Central Bank,Justice Ministry (Eurojust),Police (Europol),their own Court,EU Parliament and un-elected Commission.
The only thing missing are ... THE CITIZENS of this "state" !
The EU is the world's first "democratic" institution where the ONLY directly-elected body ( the EU Parliament ) has NO POWER TO LEGISLATE !
VOTE in the European elections 2009 and save democracy in Ireland and Europe !
