  • @prototypep4 the scale in the video is a HARMONIC minor scale. The scale you are referring to is the NATURAL minor scale.

  • Your A minor scale is wrong. Its the relative minor to C major meaning it holds the same notes. ABCDEFG is how I was always taught A minor. Was my techer wrong or are you?

  • @blwhj the 4 4 at the beginning was a time signature. 4 4 means that there are four quarter notes in each measure. They need to say how many beats are in a measure because there are other time signatures too, for example 3 4, 2 4, and 6 8, which mean three quarter notes, two quarter notes, and six eighth notes. Hope this helped :)

  • A minor sounds to damn AWESOME :D

  • I just wanted to say thank you very much, and that I really appreciate your Piano Lessons. I'm 53 years old and decided that I would really like to be able to play, and with your help I believe that I will. I only have a 61 note keyboard but it is a nice Roland Juno D Synth. I just leave it on Grand Piano for your lessons. I have only done 6 of your lessons so far, but they are truely a blessing to me. God Bless you for your efforts. Thanks again for your help.

  • I was just wondering if or when we would go over synchronizing your hands in a song, I think it's so hard :( but hey thanks for the lessons so far and thank you so much!

  • I think I missed what the 4 4 means at the beginning of the notes. Help! Thanks.

  • Thank you so much Andrew for posting free piano lessons. You inspired me so much. I'm just starting to learn piano this week. I am learning so much from you. Thank you for sharing your talent.

  • god-dammit youre helpin a lot maaaan :D

  • i feel that after lesson 3 i feel things have slowed down for me tremendously. I am familar with the chords. Should i move on to your more advanced levels?

  • Hey Andrew, just a request:

could you please explane a little bit deeper how to execute the 'fingers motion' kinda thing correctely? Sometimes I tend to play kinda randomely without a proper conciousness of how to hey the motion in the right way.

Thank you (keep up the good work)!

  • Hmm... I'm kinda having trouble getting to ur vids everytime... can u pls giv me a link of the list of all the vids for the piano lessons? Thank you so much! I'm enjoying every lesson/vids u post.. I love ur vids! I'm having trouble on some of them.. Well... thax again!

  • Andrew, not sure if any help but I've found a link where online flash cards provided and thought others would appreciate it. Thanks for the lessons (up to lesson 6, part 2) :)

  • Your Teaching is amazing

    THX :) BIG SMILE

  • Awesome lessons Andrew. I haven't purchased a keyboard yet but I watch your lessons on my lunch break at work. I find myself tapping on my desk while I eat. I've played guitar for 20+ years, just need to transfer from the fretboard to the keyboard. Thanks man!!

  • Andrew, great lessons. I haven't purchased a keyboard yet but I watch your videos on my lunch break at work. I find myself tapping on my desk while I eat my monster cookie :) I've been a guitar player for over 20 years and have always wanted to play the keys. Maybe once I get it down, my band can play some Bon Jovi!!! Thanks man -Chris

  • So a minor scale goes TONE-SEMITONE-TONE-TONE-SEMITONE-TONE-SEMITONE-SEMITONE?

  • U are amazing !

  • ur great man thank u so much ur helpin me alot!!! ;) ive been playin piano for like a year n a half by ear only n dis is really gonna help me out

  • Is there an A major scale?

  • Thanks again...and also the comments to clarify harmonics, melodic and natural =)

  • how you and can you find ludovico einaudi pieces le onde questa notte and la linea scura and play it for me and the world and do please a walkthrough about them just a lesson thank you lots of times.

  • Ur a good teacher I got everything thanx

  • plus 1 on the arabian part.. and i agree with you. i prefer minor scale song is sadder than major.

    nice job. thanks

  • First i want to thank you for the lesson, they are easy to follow. But i have the same question that manux532, so please could you explain that? thanxs

  • Thanks for all the lessons. You're an awesome teacher!!!My mom couldn't send me to lessons so i'm really thankful for the stuff i learnt from you.thanks.

  • what am i supposed to be practicing right now

  • Comment removed

  • hey lypur, i want to thank you for your great work first than nothing! But i am confused. When you show the A minor scale, when you the next to last note you say to go one tone but there is actually 1 tone and a half.... so which one is correct?

  • yeah, im not gettin that

  • I'm just a beginner myself so take it for what it's worth but I think he had to jump at the end to follow the pattern whilst still ending up on a semitone leading into an A to complete the scale which began on A

  • He's playing the A Minor "Harmonic" scale which has a raised 7th (the tone and a half skip). The reason its raised is to give it a greater pull towards the Tonic Chord. The reason he didn't explain the A Minor "Melodic" scale is becuase that does NOT have a raised 7th. You'll always used the raised Seventh (Harmonic Minor Scale) in chords so he left the "Melodic" out. Without raising the 7th, Dominant chords have no power/pull and actually become diminished chords.

  • Sorry. To correct my disinformation: The Melodic Scale has a raised 7th AND a raised 6th. Its rarely used for an entire piece. What I was referring to is the A "Natural Minor Scale". This has no raised 7th which you need for spelling chords in a minor scale. So basically you'll use Harmonic Minor 90% of the time.

  • thank you, these lessons are very helpful

  • one question sir.....but is there a name for the black keys?? and HOW do you play them?? THANk you, you still rocks my socks. lol

    =D

  • The black keys are the sharps and flats. find the middle C key. The black key next to that is C-sharp, or C#.(same thing). Going to the right the Black keys raise the white key to the left of it. Also called sharping the note. Going to the left the black keys flat the white keys, or lowers them. The black keys are simply just changing the pitch of a note You can sharp or flat a note Except E F B C There isnt an Esharp/Fflat, Bsharp/Cflat. Hence, why there arn't any black keys in between them. =D

  • Sir, I am alittle condused about the last tone. In the previous lessons you said that F & G was a whole tone cause there is a black key in between, but now you go TONE- SEMI TONE- TONE- TONE- SEMI TONE- and then you press F and G sharp, why not F & G as a whole tone? Thank you for the great lessons sir, you are awesome.

  • It was a mistake on my part, F to G# is a tone and a half

  • Thank you sir, you are awesome

  • @Lypur

so the correct sequence of a minor scale is

tone - semitone - tone - tone- semitone - tone and a half - semitone?

  • What a beautiful thing to do, helping others.

    Have you made any cd's?

  • Ive been playing a few basic songs. just to train my hands

when your first starting out its a bitch to play the treble clef and the base clef at the same time.

  • Everyone asking questions.. PLEASE GO AND WATCH HIS LESSONS FROM NUMBER 1 and stop anoying him..

  • F and Ab is a tone or half tone,I don't understand this? All of them are very nice ,thanks.Hi from Istanbul..

  • it's a tone because you jump G.

  • Correct me if i'm wrong...

    Major Scale:

Whole Half Whole Whole Whole Half Whole

    Minor Scale:

    1 2 1 1 2 1 2

Whole Half Whole Whole Half Whole Half

  • Comment removed

  • its a real great thing you've done here..thank you

  • F to Ab is a tone and a half?

  • whats the diff. between semi tone and tone?????? ur hands move just the same

  • your the best teacher on the planet.. thanx

  • Niiiiiiiiiice i am in 6 lesson and training 2 days aand its fantastic i love it !!!

  • man, i was paying a guy monthly and was just lost the whole time. I've learned more in a day and a half watching you and already know alot more than i did with the other guy.. I really do appreciate what your doing. Thank you so much.

  • Thank you for posting such insightful and easy to follow lessons, you are a great teacher, i began taking a Piano course and have been moved from beggining to intermediate level after going through all of your lessons, and practicing a little, thanks

  • Every good student come from a great teacher.

Your way of teaching is easy understanding and straight to the point.

  • Thanks so much for your lessons, you're a great teacher! But you know i'm kinda confused about the dynamics, did you also play piano and pianissimo in your vid, i guess i didn't get it :/

  • sorry I don't understand the padding for a minor scale: it would be Tone SemiT Tone Tone SemiT Tone Tone so why in A minor scale there's an G#?

  • Your really good. All the lessons are easy to understand. Thank you for the uploads. ^^

And you make them entertaining too. xP

  • lypur, i have this difficulty of recognizing notes from the music sheets even by ur tips on previous lessons. can u help me?

  • don't worry, it's normal not to be able to recignize the notes still. It takes 2-3 weeks of DEDICATED practice. Spend about 1-2 hours a day going over the notes with flash cards then you'll be set

  • you play soo good,, realy :D haha

  • thanks :)

  • didn't meant to rate my comment bad lol sorry

  • I'm not sure if you've put this in your later lessons but C major has no flats or sharps and it's equivalent minor is a-minor as it too has no sharps of flats. however you maybe should mention that you've sharpened the 7th note because it's a harmonic minor, when you're good at something like you are, it's hard to cover all the little details. good job though love your lessons :)

  • Great Job sir keep it up i'm a rap artist who also produces. I wanted to step my Piano game up I have a Motiff 6. I can make beats all day but now I want to get more into the notes melodies. Your on your A Game so I will keep getting my practice in. My mother is also giving me lessons so it't the best of both worlds good job.

  • my keyboard stinks. im using a toy one caus i dont have a big one.lol

  • I just cant stop watching =) So great...

Played for 3 months now, and up til this lesson I can say I have learned everything. But I have always wonderd what the F''' legato, and staccato was. And what the dotted "popcorns" and ties where meaning =) Just GREAT =)))

  • :) Glad you liked it man ;) You probably won't believe me, but a year from now, you'll be an awesome pianist and tell me to come back to read this message! We'll even be friends!

  • @Lypur What? Now that sounds so unrealistic!!;) .. But Ill just take your word for it then!;) hehe

.. funny how the past is still so present when it comes back you yah!:)

  • @Lypur well its been a year. Are you awesome yet? and are you friends with lypur?

  • T-T i play on a keyboard and it isn't that sofisticaded to play softer or lauder... anyway i really apreaciate what you do for us the noobs , thx a lot :D

  • hey, you got it wrong here at a minor. there's no black note, look at that again.

  • I don't understand the point of minor and major scales... is just for practice, or is so that you get a greater depth of knowledge on how the different combinations of keys work and sound...?

  • it's for both of those answers ^_^ the knowledge is invaluable, and playing them with your fingers further strengthens this

  • lol in the beginng when you were teaching legato you went C,D,G,F,E,D,C when on your chart it didnt show a C in there -_-(sorry i just want to feel smart by correcting you xD).

  • i dont get the majors and minners

  • These videos are really really helpful.. coupled with a self help book it is like having someone in the room teaching you. Thank you

  • you're welcome ^_^ glad i could be of service

  • When you were doing the A-minor scale, isn't the second to last key you hit suppose to be G instead of G-Sharp? That's how I was taught, am I wrong?

  • I'm confused! Wouldn't the tone from F be to G and not G sharp? Help me out

  • i know...i over looked something here, (i'm not human i make mistakes since this is all done with NO EDITING and VERY little planning) i made it more clear in lesson #26 check that out for a better explination sorry!

  • Yes, I noticed that too. I think he might have got the pattern wrong or something. Please Andy, help us on this issue.

  • Hey, I always wanted to play the piano properly but I never seemed to have the attention span for it. Now I stumbled accross your videos you have given me an interest again and i have learnt a lot so far. You're doin a great job, THANKS!!!!

  • thanks buddy

  • you're most welcome

  • Ok, so when do we need these scales?

Did I miss that part, or haven't you got there yet?

  • you should start practising scales VERY slowly right away, they'll train your fingers to do what you ask them to do, it's that simple ^_^ maybe you missed it if you skipped lessons?

  • This is great. It's like having a private tutor. Thanks so much! I hope you keep posting. It's a big help. Go Canada!

  • go canada? yea! sounds good to me ^_^ i love my country, but at the same time i'm not going to be arrogant enough to say it's the greatest country in the world, since i really haven't been anywhere else so i don't know! Take care, thanks for the comment

  • I said that because I'm also Canadian now. I didn't update my profile to reflect that, eh? (still not used to the "eh" thing, though.) I I love Philippines and Canada. Yeah, Canada is cool especially with people like YOU taking time to do this on your free time :))) I'm sure a lot of people appreciate it.

  • Why do you Love The Philippines?? are you a Filipina before?? I'm asking this because i was a Filipino and im just wondering about that..

  • bless up urrself...really like wat ur doing.however im not sure y u call the interval from F to Ab on d A minor scale a and tone and not a tone and a half? Plz shed some light..keep up d good work

  • hey, yea i actually recently made a video to explain this tone and a half thing, look at lesson #26

  • bless up urrself...really like wat ur doing.however im not sure y u call the interval from F to Ab on d A minor scale a and tone and not a tone and a half? Plz shed some light..keep up d good work

  • So nice of you doing those videos.

    Thank you!

  • don't do that.. i'm falling in love with you.. hahaha tnx for ur nice vids, it really helps a lot of people, including me..

  • don't do what?? you're falling in love? that's sweet to say, i'm happy to hear my videos are helping ^_^

    take care

  • haha yeah i love you already... uhmm.. wat i min by that is the way you are teaching, it's kinda funny but smart at the same time.. i'm sorry i dont know how to put it in words.. hahaha

  • I'm confused. My other studies have all showed me that A minor was the same as C Major, not with the sharp.?

  • that's true they share the same key signature, but whenever you use what is called a harmonic scale, they modify the last (7th) note of the scale so that there is only a semi tone gap between them, my next lesson (#26) is actually going to be on this confusing topic!

  • Thanks. I actually didn't notice you said you were playing harmonic. My bad.

  • "good bye" with a giant smile XD

  • heh:)

  • your welcome

  • Thanks for all ur videos man!!!:D

I really appreciate people who posts these kind of video.

  • thanks, it's always nice to be appreciated!

  • "On the A minor scale you said tone but you did a tone and a half. I'm confused, what does it mean?"

Yeah same here...Got kinda confused at that part...

  • Best teacher I ever did have... :')

Thank you so much! Things become so much more clearer when you have a good teacher around!

  • aww thanks! i'm very happy you found thing easy to grasp!

  • I love the A minor

  • heeh.. Was kind of relaxing to watch your lessons, even though I don't need these things any more... As a teacher (you) it would be nice if you performed something.... heeh

  • I've got a few performances uploaded that you could check out ^_^

  • Oh yeah, sure, How didn't I think of that...

  • I've started learning piano very recently and looked around many different vids. But let me tell you as a very begginer in music, you are the best by far! Your teaching style is very relaxed and comfortable, and yet very comprehensive. If you have any teaching mats for sale, I will be the first one to jump in. Thank you soooo much and keep up the great work!

  • Dude i need somngs to play hahaha keep playing them at end

  • On the A minor scale you said tone but you did a tone and a half. I'm confused, what does it mean?

  • very cool....I like you lesson and learn very easy...

  • u do a good job at teaching, last night after doing about four lesson, i think i stopped at lesson four last night i took out my old sheet music from chorus and started playing the the lyric notes so now if i hav trouble practicing my solo at home this year i can sit at the piano and help myself find the notes i cant wait to see the rest of ur vids thanx. peace

  • you're welcome ^_^ yea, it rocks when you're able to read your own sheet music...makes you feel in alot more control, thanks for the comment

  • teachers are too expensive, so im relying on you.

  • ur videos rock!

  • "Oh my gosh! He's doin' like major scales all before but now its like minor, ahhh!!!".Nice voice LOL xD!!!

  • Could you please let me know how can I message you? (Not comments) I'm new on Youtube and I love your teaching. thanks

  • if you'd like to message me, just click on my name (Lypur) then you'll be taken to my channel, where you can subscribe to me, so that when i put out a new video it shows up for you, also on the left side bar you can send me a message ^_^

  • I have a question: isn't F to G sharp a tone and a half? You said it was a tone.

  • did i? that's quite possible i said something by mistake. Yea from F to G# would be a tone and a half for sure.

  • Well, i guess you were mistaken then, either about the tones or about the minor scale. A minor scale is A, B, C, D, E, F, G#, A, right? If so, then it's a tone and a half. Well, anyways, your videos are great to teach the basics, but if one wants to play advanced piano, one should search a teacher. There's no way someone could be taught piano just by video. But I like what you're doing, it sure gives the basics to people who can't for some reason have a teacher.

  • Yea, for sure, there's NO way i can replace a physical teacher:P, I actually have students in real life, and the video's are much more limited. But i thought it's a good introduction incase someone is interested, but doesn't want to commit to lessons just yet.

  • I just love your lessons! I whish i could be hours with my piano and the computer. Thanks.

  • How long do you think its gonna take for us to compose or play black keys?I hope its in a few months.

  • Hi, this is good stuff man. I'm learning so much just from a couple videos. Keep it up. I'm watching all of your lessons.

  • Thanks, I'm glad to have helped

  • if you do not find them interesting then do not watch and shut up.

    for me this really helps

  • one more thing if you would notice your pattern for the minor in this video is not right

  • i bought a 88 key synth with hammer feel to it thanks for the tips how to use it.some people are haters you teach some good patterns.

  • I like the part you mentioned to use the shoulder to play ff, that really help !

  • i wish i had a piano D:

  • i think your lessons are actually pretty informative. You're probably one of the few, if not, the only pianist on youtube who posts tutorials on how to actually play the piano, versus just how to play a specific piece.

good job, and i'm sure there are people who appreciate your efforts. They're getting free lessons, and it's not going to be as intimate as private, one-on-one lessons but, it's still more than most people are willing to offer.

  • Gosh I was looking forward to learning the piano with you until my Keyboard broke lol! That sux man, ah well i'll watch your videos anyways. :-)

  • hey, yea sorry things started to get a bit boring....i think i was just a bit to tired to make things interesting when i recorded this. You want to learn to use the pedal right? Alright I'll put that in for my next lesson.

  • ur fuckin shit!!! nd none of them r interesting

  • reminds me of the tiresome piano lessons I used to have. I had to do the same ruddy song for 2 weeks :( lol. Can we have some non-piano lessons. Just you playing really advanced pieces like erm...Rachmaninoff Concerto 3?

  • teach us how to use the pedal

  • wtf is th point of this... who is gona learn anything
