  • And Here We Are. Blood, Flesh and Stardust.

  • Glas dat not true .. E.t cover ups ..ancient aliens nuff said

  • Nobals is just pushen ur butons guys he knows the truth come on.. Man .. Do u still belive in santa to give u present out of a chimney

  • this is highly unrealistic...

  • Shouldn't they be speaking backwards?

  • this reminds me and looking at the stars there may not be any sign of earth because 1 we cut the trees down 2 we trash instead of recycling 3 i meen cmon trucks cars ect YOU GET THE POINT!!!!! 8D

  • @FilmClaw even a grain of sand it's important for the universe. I still love to watch the sky and dream the stars

  • such a great opening to a movie... and im so happy Cosmos is coming back to tv.... the universe is so fascinating

  • we are probably very primitive compared to what's out there : )

  • @funkdik Bollocks! theres no such thing.....twat

  • @funkdik thats what i think too, we are a young species, imagine a race of species surviving for billions of years, we think time travel, teleportation etc are impossible, maybe those terms are primitive to them, we couldnt even imagine what they can do, where they live. this universe (if its the only universe) is too big for us..

  • I love this opening scene. I don't know what's more prevalent in my mind when I see this...I'm incredibly small or the universe is incredibly large. Both are true. You guys arguing about god and aliens need to chill out and discuss more rationally and certainly with a little more respect. If you think about it a little bit you may find that gods and aliens are the same thing. Check the history with an open mind. Our ancestors didn't just make stuff up when they began recording it.

  • Ms. South Carolina is fucking hot !!!!

  • What is the structure revealed after the milkyway is revealed (the black and white sphere with a dark circle around it, seen at 2:32) I don't think it's a galaxy cluster because that structure is too uniform. Is it showing the theoretical multiverse?

    SOMEONE TELL ME!!!!!!

  • @xandermful Just another elliptical galaxy with band of interstellar gas and dust. Looks like radio galaxy Centaurus A.

  • You can see The Great Attractor. Coolies.

  • I think the person mentioning ''Jesus'' and how there is no life and we are the only living creatures is cookoo and talking out of their URANUS..............................i cant believe these idiots are still on our planet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • God must be very proud.

  • @NobDickBalls 2011....still believes in god....AHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • @kruxy404 you make me sick! GOD IS THE REAL ONES ALIENS ARE FICTIONAL BEINGS YOU TWAT!!!!!!!!

  • @NobDickBalls @NobDickBalls the belief that some cosmic jewish zombie can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him that you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a woman was convinced by a evil talking snake to eat from a magical tree......

yeah makes perfect sense. your fucking religion is a joke you stupid fuck, its not fit for even a fairy tale, its so

    far-fetched and outdated

  • @kruxy404 For fuck sake you think aliens are more believable than our father?! correction sci fi is a joke nobshite...its making loonatics listen out for radio signals from fictional beings!!!! HOW FUCKING STUPID IS THAT?! God created us he is our father he deserves more respect than this asshole!!!!!

  • @NobDickBalls WHERE IS THE PROOOOOOOF FAGGOT, WHEEEEEEEEEERE ? i never said i believed in aliens, I don't believe in god, I'm a man of logic not some brainwashed low IQ dumbfuck who believes in a fictional being, go worship your fucking flying spaghetti monster....

religion as a set of beliefs is dying and your kind is dying with it, you belong in the dark ages

  • @kruxy404 How dare you ask proof for our father!!!!! he created us you twat you would'nt exist if it were'nt for him!!!! I hope some missionaries will show you the way nobshite THEN AGAIN YOU BE BURNING IN HELL DICKSHIT!!!!!!!! ALIENS ARE THE FICTIONAL BEINGS NOBSACK!!!!!! YOU DO REALISE THIS IS A MOVIE!!! SETI HAS'NT AND WON'T FIND ANYTHING TWAT! Correction ungrateful shits like you belong in the dark age..then you will be grateful!!!!!!! Science of gods universe is utter bollocks!!

  • @NobDickBalls LOL your stupidity is borderline insanity, stop using aliens to weigh up your argument, if you learned to read, which you haven't, you would have noticed i said i don't believe in aliens in my previous comment... This isn't about aliens or the movie, this is about your beliefs which are TOTAL bullshit, I ask for proof and you have NOTHING, and don't fucking say faith..

faith is the excuse of a man too lazy to investigate, or in your case extremely stupid, possibly retarded

  • @NobDickBalls Nice trolling. If you aren't, then it's ironic you mention the dark ages, because people didn't question God in that era.

  • @RFLAGGSTAND616 Actually these fucking pricks keep saying i belong in the dark age.... for fuck sake ungrateful shits are the ones that belong there! Then these pompus shits don't go listening for little green cock blowing shits that sin all their lives! fucking horse banging queers the lot of you! this gay ass movie sucked ass terrible acting, gay story line, shitty cgi...list keeps going..........

  • @NobDickBalls You do belong in the dark ages.

Someone that is not graceful of the scientists that got us out of the dark ages, gave us life saving medicines and sent us into space.

The dark ages was controlled by people that worship God and filled with ignorance and you sir belong in them.

  • @NobDickBalls And God deserves no respect. I give the Easter Bunny no respect, but you don't see people busting a nut over that.

  • @NobDickBalls ...lol

  • David95228,sorry david,didn't correct your name.

  • David998 That's your assumption.Well we've had seti searching for E.T. how many years and how many aliens have we discovered?Sure we've only checked out less than 1% of our own galaxy, let alone universe, but the fact remains we found nada.WE are the aliens, that is we are the only intelligent life out there.Jesus died for US,not other aliens. If their our other aliens,God created them,He can do whatever he wants, but I don't think their are.God sent his son to die for US,not some thoeretical alien.

  • Great scene,I know alot of nonbelievers will believe this but we are signifigant, that's why God sent his son to die for us.This argues against extraterrestial life. After all,if there were millions of planets with intelligent life booming on them, why would Jesus have ro die for us?Because we're the only planet that has intelligent life and are the pinnacle of God's creation.Man can get us into space but only Jesus can get us into heaven.

  • @glassstatue

Duude your way off....we are the only planet with intelligent life? Do you have any idea of the assumption your making? Unless im wrong and youve checked out every single planet in the universe

  • @glassstatue

Duude your way off....we are the only planet with intelligent life? Do you have any idea of the assumption your making? Unless im wrong and youve checked out every single planet in the universe

  • Hope SETI succeeds, better yet in our lifetimes. it would be the most amazing thing ever, receiving radio signals from an alien race whether it was intentional or not.Find this type of stuff exciting!

  • is it me or are they missing uranus, neptune and pluto?

  • I love this footage. Carl Sagan among others saw this in his head and brought it to the main stream collective. I look at this and it reminds me of how insignificant we really are. God knows why we still fight wars.

  • "Billions and billions of stars.. we gaze at them in wonder"

  • @Andybaby 300 sextillion actually.

  • @ItCameFromTheSkyBeLo

I was doing my Carl Sagan impersonation. :)

  • @Andybaby SQUEEE!!! :D

  • hey daddy, can we go again :)

  • Beautiful scene.

  • Spice Girls @ 0:11

  • DAMN

  • Amazing opening

  • @FilmClaw you know what i think? i think we were meant to live forever, i mean really why would there be Billion and trillions of Universes and Galaxies?

  • @xKurisox

    8|

    I don't get it....

You've asked two questions, in one sentence - Neither of which seems linked to the other! :D

Repeat more clearly, unless of course you were stoned when you posted - In which case my answer would be:

"Why indeed, fellow traveller, why indeed..."

    ::P

  • @trentmuch1 lol ah i wasn't stoned that's for sure and...i think i was asking don't you think we weren't made to die? but eh i just thought of the vid and then i let my mind wander which lead to that question xD

  • This is the second most meaningful scene in the movie in my opinion. The first most is the one with the vegan as he's holding a pile of sand and a few grains glitter... That's what this movie is really about

  • "'I'm significant!' Screamed the dust speck."

    -Calvin and Hobbes

  • I remember seeing this in the theater, Oct. 1997. This opening sequence absolutely blew my mind away.

  • I think i heard somewhere that all the sounds depicted in this scene are actually the length these sounds made into space

  • @Tdi7457

thats most likely correct. Radio signals travel through space, and the further away you are, the longer it takes for the sound to reach you, so the further the camera moves away, the older the audio becomes

  • What an awful waste of space!

  • must be how God see's us

  • @apollonas101 Sufi saying: "These eyes through which I hoped to see God are the eyes through which God sees me."

    Namaste'

  • This is the Italian version

  • which version is that ? which language ?

  • "that pale blue dot..."

  • awe enspiring, thanks Carl.

  • according to this the last thing heard is hitler spewin' his rhetoric, so that would mean its the first thing aliens would hear... lovely, our spokesperson is adolf hitler.

  • @coffinman82 Seen the movie?

  • I miss Carl Sagan's voice. He sounded like no one else and his use of the English language was inspiring.

Sincerely ... Walter Garbotz, Ontario, Canada

  • Very poignant

  • Scene makes me feel how small we all are in the grand scheme of things

  • If this makes you feel small, you missed the point.

  • @happystance7able Someone who gets it. People automatically exclude themselves from everything around them.

  • @Topmostpop The only thing you got right there was the last sentence.

  • Toward the end it reminds me of Hubble's Ultra Deep Field picture...That thing just amazes me.

  • can anyone identify all the songs that are played in the first few seconds? whats the song thats on after that spice girls song? ^^

  • @Hillbillyarious it really isn't significant...it seems the purpose is to suggest that whatever we broadcast, gets "out thtere'.

  • @Hillbillyarious "God Shuffled his Feet," Crash Test Dummies, from 1993.

  • funny

  • i love thise scene too, it makes you thing about how far radio signals have been traveling through space and how enourmus our universe is

  • @Topmostpop

For Nibiru to be real it would have to be traveling faster than the speed of light towards us. Just saying. Most people say Nibiru will some shortly, yet no one has seen it. Those picks in Antarctica are of either Venus(Venus is known to be a yellow big star) or mars. There is no way Nibiru can come every- what is it? 3.600 years?

  • @Topmostpop where does xenu reside?

  • Just got this movie on LaserDisc today!

  • @RkivUnderground whats 1989 like?

  • @boyleb1 Contact wouldn't be released until 1997.

  • Looks a lot like that scene in secret space volume 1 I believe...

  • I miss the 70ths with rock music like ccr or jefferson airplane

  • Nice, but the audio doesn't match the distance... and the universe isn't actually coloured that way, NASA puts false colour in almost everything.

  • @hairhorn true ad jupiter the music was very old lol and the music should ahve stopped at the first stars

  • @selearemus ...not quite, closest star is only 4 light years away, broadcasts of music have been around many decades.

  • @hairhorn first stars i ment 100-90 but not he cluster o.o

  • you know what would be cool? If someone would reverse the playback so we can see it as moving through the universe TOWARDS earth.

    :)

  • For me, it shows how amazingly powerful and amazing God is. His amazing creation, The Universe. Who knows there could be multiple Universes in groups and we are part of one, and lets go even farther, the cluster of Universes could be in a disk shaped object similar to a Universe itself or something completely far from what our minds can comprehend. I mean..God is the God of creation. I love Contact. It shows both sides of the coin.

  • @Viz731 yea sure god no comment -.-

  • most wonder opening ! indeed the graphic designer made the "man face" on Mars but too fast to see.

  • all of these comments are retarded, this is a movie..just..a movie.

  • this is one my most favorite movies ever made....especially since it was dedicated to Dr. Sagan...you guys should read the actual book of this movie...even better, since in the book it describes what Ellie and her "father" talk about on the island...pretty deep stuff.

  • MRS. BROWN: [sigh] "Makes you feel so, sort of, insignificant, doesn't it?"

MAN: "Yeah. Yeah. [sniff] Can we have your liver, then?"

MRS. BROWN: "Yeah. All right. You talked me into it."

-The Meaning of Life - Monty Python

  • Its a nice film

  • i love this scene with a passion... it really makes you feel EXTREMELY tiny!

  • I think that was the point Carl Sagan was trying to get across. ;)

  • @racergonemad99 You are right. We are tiny.

  • Powerful pictures. I am afraid earth's radio emissions are far too weak to be received at Vega.

  • @NeedsEvidence Obviously, they were trying to demonstrate that time is relative to space.

  • I gave you a 5 star because this was Beautiful to watch. I like how it ended too. Thanks! ~Andree'

  • Watch "Disclosure Project"

  • Can't begin to imagine how fast you'd have to be traveling to match the speed of this sequence...

  • at least 100 faster than light

  • This is a beautiful scene. Movies have access to so much better CGI nowadays but none of them can compare to the movies of the 90s in the use of CGI in imaginative ways.

  • I feel that may be due to over saturation of CGI as a tool. It isn't just for special effects anymore, entire movies are CGI these days.

  • I really want to HD version of this scene. It's just spectacular.

  • I NEED TO KNOW

what the song is, with the sweet guitar riff 0:07 - 0:09 is

I've been trying to figure out what that song is :(

oh and this is a pretty good movie....well the concept of it all

  • another thing they got wrong was the center of the universe isn't some little girl's eye ball

  • @sja11

Can you cite your sources on this declaration...

  • @zzinglish53 Oh...You! You seem to center on the center a lot.

  • @1971SuperLead Why not, in fond memory of the concept you've eradicated by dipping it in meaninglessness via edge erasure?? Is a sentence with a double center on the edge of understanding and self eradicating?

  • @zzinglish53 My, aren't WE precious! I think I'm only half way to seeing this, however as I only see this preciousness half the time. Lately, all my friends hate my guts. Is this a good sign? I seem to be the axis of evil lately. I'm pissing everyone off and I can't blame them. Why can't I keep my mouth shut? Storms brew everytime I open it. Honesty is NOT the best policy. Silence is golden! Gawd! And here I am yakking it up again! I need a lonely cave atop a mountain!

  • @sja11 it should have been a red blood cell

  • @sja11 who said it was the center?

  • One thing they got wrong with this sequence is that radio stations or any broadcast travels at the speed of light. Broadcasts like this would already be light years farther than depicted here. Meh, you can't complain though, awesome sequence, awesome movie.

  • @Ubstudios was intentional- they wanted people to understand the concept of traveling radio waves

  • this is really cool, reminds me of Powers of Ten

  • this is the kinda scene that makes you depressed in inadequacy

  • too bad thers not a high quality version of this vid... =(

  • 100 Snazzes on the 100 point Snazz-o-Scale!

    -Wonderful and Perfect!

-This scene is fantastic. Traveling back in time as you pass through the radio and television waves. The astonishing special effects. Then the silence and vastness of space. Oo, I get chills just looking at it.

-Thank you SO much for posting this.

  • Nice detail on the audio stuff (even if the scale was wrong). I think you could hear the 1939 Olympic games near the end of the audio portion.

  • You can! Not to ruin any surprises in the movie but that's a plot point. They claim that the 1939 (Or was it 1937?) Olympics in Berlin was The First Broadcast to reach deep space. Hm. Germany was at war in 39 already, so I don't think the Olympics were then, but I may be mistaken.

  • Whoops, I didn't catch that. It was actually the Games of the XI Olympiad in 1936.

  • 1936

  • @TheRadical42 Who needs to actually KNOW shit before commenting on it. Knowing what you're talking about is for faggots, apparently.

  • Oh yeah? Well your momma eats cornbread! With roaches on it! : P

  • our solar system isn't part of that nebula is it?

  • no it isn't.

  • Amazing scene, only problem is that it kind of gave away the entire premise of the movie =\

  • I LOVE this scene. One small issue, it seems like they move back in time quicker than they should. They were playing the Dallas theme before it even passed the moon. But if Dallas came out about 15 years before the film, then it should have been heard about 15 light years out. The things from WWII should have been heard about 50 light years out. But they got there just on the edge of our solar system. Then strangely, the remaining few years lasted until 7000 light years out, at the Eagle Nebula.

  • Good observation, I'll have to watch again and pay closer attention...

I just added this to my favorites, it's one of the best opening scenes in movie history, dontcha agree?

  • oh the science isn't quite right with this scene definitely, but I think it was made just as a poetic gesture, more than anything.

  • a "not to scale" sign would make you happy?

  • So beautiful

  • Did anyone catch the bit of morse code at the end?

  • Titanic SOS

  • where? i think i hear morse code past the eagle nebula... is that?

  • Don't want to get into a debate on religion here - but this scene for me brings home how insignificant we are as a planet and a race in the hugeness of the universe. An indescribable power/energy created all the matter that is depicted so beautifully in this opening sequence to one of my favourite movies. And it's dedicated to Carl Sagan - the late astronomer and visionary. I'm a friend of Bill W and the whole concept of this scene helps get me through my day....

  • @ahpollyolly Wow I got the opposite impression. I believe it shows how precious life is -- like an Oasis in the cold desert of space. An indescribable power/energy created all the matter that is depicted so beautifully in this opening sequence -- and that same power lies within us <3

Life is a creative process & the creative process is all about change...turning something into something else... transformation of energy...E=mc2

    .

That concept helps me get through the day.

  • @ahpollyolly I agree with you.

  • That makes me feel so small.

  • theres a simpsons version of this

  • In case anyone was wondering, watching this is what it feels like to be high.

  • no it doesnt.

  • not really no.

  • Have you been high?

  • Amazing and crepy at the same time. Space is an awesome thing...

  • Fantastic opening scene. Always brings the hairs up. Nice one

  • awe-inspiring
