It's not always about being able to use one mouthpiece to do everything. Sometimes you just can't get the right sound with a particular setup; not all trumpets are designed the same...same thing goes with mouthpieces. Like, a heavy trumpet will never sound good in a big band setting, just as an ultra light trumpet will never sound good in a symphonic setting. You need to use the right horn/mpc for the job at hand, but unfortunately not all of us can afford 5 different Bb's and 20 Monette mpc's
I hope the two mouthpieces he uses are the same size and he only changes to get more of a fizz. Otherwise that doesn't send out a good message. Shew is good enough to do everything he needs on one mouthpiece, surely?
He wasn't always in favor of switching. I remember a Shew clinic from the 80's where he said the screw-on rim was the only type of switching he approved of. Much later he said "I tried one mouthpiece for everything for twenty years before I realized it didn't work." (or similar words.) Switching in the middle of a song is not something everybody would approve of though. (Then again, a lot of guys seem to think you're a sissy if you don't play double Cs on a trombone mouthpiece.)

sounds good but eh...stand up...what solo piece has the soloist ever sitting down?..And oOoh.. he forgot to switch back to the kelly in the end lol....
Thank you, if you watched the video of Bobby walking out he is using a cane. The legs don't affect the playing - unless you are standing and in pain. Bobby still sets the standard for others.
Bobby is such a tasteful player. He really owns the upper register but only uses it musically, unlike many players today that think all everyone wants to hear is "scream" trumpet. One of my favorites for sure.

he is actually a strong advocate of using the right mouthpiece for the right job.
