  • Thanks for the vid but could you also mention 59 pin DVis? I had a heckuva time finding what the heck it was lol.

  • Did you miss that the middle "blade" is shorter on the DVI-D than the DVI-I? just wanted to let ppl know coz ive done the pin snapping and the middle still never fit... so ive snapped that off too but now im to scared to jack it in in case i short out my beautiful computer.

  • @X360HotSwap That's why I don't recommend you do it, its a bit dodgy, if you did plug it in and it shorted it probably wouldn't do much, most likely the video output decoder would detect the short and shut down and stop receiving data from the chip-set until the short was removed.

    So basically, black screen.

But I still don't recommend you try it, you never know what it might do.

    Thanks for your comment.

  • Thank you for a well explained 'dvi lecture'. My pc has dvi-i and my monitor has dvi-d dual. Can I get a converter for this configuration?

  • If i wanna connect PS3 to my LCD-Monitor which has only VGA port, can i use a HDMI splitter which has an HDMI -Female and DVI-D-Female, and then using an DVI-D cabel and use and DVI-I To VGA adapter, i tried, and im only got Black screen and my monitor has more than 50Hz! i need realy help with this!

  • Cool, helped. Thanks!

  • hi, if i have one dvi port on the back of my monitor, is there a way to connect 2 different things to that one dvi port? for example my playstation AND my pc, both to one monitor using that ONE dvi port? is there some sort of splitter available to make that one dvi port into two ports?

  • w0w nc 1 :) its the one is very helpfull wit me :)

  • also, are there any av to dvi cable adaptors out there? and if there are and i wanted to connect 3 rca cables from the av cable, to a dvi port, how would i get audio?

(trying to connect a playstation 2, to a dvi port)

  • this is probably the best explained video on youtube, very clear and understandable. great work man! do more videos like this!

  • makes a dvi to hdmi cable hd for my ps3?

  • thanks man

  • Thank you from California!

  • Thanks a lot mate. Saved me a lot of trouble. Just a question, for now my monitor is connected to my PC via VGA cable since my monitor have both VGA and DVI-D, but I've only VGA cable, so had to get VGA Adapter since my video card had only DVI-I. Will quality improve if I connect my PC and monitor via DVI cable and is there such cables when on one end it's DVI-I and on other DVI-D? Or should I simply get DVI-D cable and use that, since it will fit into my video card DVI-I slot?

  • i have a dvi-i cable coming from my moniter the problem is that theres no more slots like vga i really want to play my ps3 on there coz my fat ps3 has no place to sit and the slim ps3 is pluged in anordinary tv i want hd gameing so if i put the dvi-i in to the dvi-i dulle will it get the vid cos i tried to loog for a dvi-i female to hdmi male adapter but couldent find any

  • Hopefully someone on here can help me, I want to attach a Dell external screen to my iMac (Mini Display Port) is it worth just using the D-SUB (VGA) or is it worth using DVI-D and getting a DVI-D to mini display port adaptor?

  • @craigjaggs It depends on the monitor, if your just using an average dell monitor than it might not be worth the extra cost, if you don't notice the differenced.

If you had a £500 neovo monitor or something like that, than it would be worth the extra cost.

however you will get a slightly sharper image with the DVI as a posed to Dsub. And for gaming some people including my self have noticed a slight increase in frame rate.

I hope this helped and thank you for your comment.

    nice one!!!

  • @viperfrank Hey dude thanks for getting back to me, will the quality of the splitter effect the DVI quality?

  • @craigjaggs no problem, not massively, unless you buy one that is really cheap and nasty than you probably will.

but as long as you get a fairly decent one you probably won't notice the difference.

unless its made by apple I would avoid ones that claim to have loads of bells and whistles, because its just going to be more useless stuff that is ether not going to be compatible or will just go wrong.

hope this helped and thanks for your comment.

    nice one!!!

  • @viperfrank Hey dude thanks for getting back to me, will the quality of the dvi to mini display port effect the DVI quality?

  • Very helpful thanks 

  • @TheChrisglasgow Thank you, I'm glad you like the video. I will hopefully have some more videos up soon.

    Thanks again for your comment.

  • Is HDMI better than DVI for gaming.

  • @springer841 To be honest with you there pretty much the same thing. although HDMI can be more convenient because it streams audio as well. but in terms of performance you probably won't see much of a difference, DVI tends to be cheaper, so if there is no performance benefits than its not worth going out a spending big money on a HDMI monitor.

Hope this helps and thank for your comment.

    nice one!!!

  • Great vid nice and clean. Do you have any idea what DVI I need for a GTX 580. Thanks

  • @springer841 thank you.

to be honest with you 99% of graphics cards come with a DVI-I and DVI -I will fit all of them so go with what's on your monitor. also 99% of DVI compatible monitors use DVI-D, so just go with a DVI-D and that should do you just fine.

I did another video on this subject you might want to check that one out as well.

also get your cable on line form like eBay or amazon or something, there a lot cheaper.

hope this helped and thanks again for your comment.

    nice one!!!

  • Nice helpless video, thanks

  • My monitor have a DVI-D dual link port the GPU that i want to BUY is XFX HD 6790 which has DVI-I Port can i connect my monitor to GPU with DVI-D cable?? plz reply

  • @bardhiRKS Hi there, yes you can, DVI-I will accommodate a DVI-D cable. so yes it will fit.

that's a nice card your getting.

    thanks for your comment.

    nice one!!!

  • The flat blade on a DVI-I cable is also wider than the flat blade of a DVI-D cable.

  • Thank You :D

  • i bought an DVI D cable for the monitor even though i had a vga cable and it looked allright on a 1920 1080 resolution, but when VGA is so old nowadays, il thought it would be better with a DVI cable, cant find so much differrence in quality, maybe slightly more vibrant, or crisp.. or maybe its just my eyes

  • at 4:01 you can see that the input on the monitor has holes all over it but the dvi cable end itself only has 2/3 pins in it, its not like filling the slots :D why

  • @rrgert4

Imo its because the people who made the monitor wants it to be compatible with as many cables as possible, even if the cable and the output source is only able to use 2/3 of the pins(single link). In other words the more holes, the more compability, even if hardware is only able to make use of single link.So even if the ports looks like they can make use of dual, it might only be because they want the ability to fit hardware with dual cables. Try google:"what are single and dual links"

  • What difference is there between DVI-D and the other DVI, my monitor has DVI-D

  • thank you friend for sharing ur knowledge...great upload.....still makes us to remind tat there r so many things to be concerned of while bringing a dvi cable...

  • very helpful video, thanks man

  • wonderful educational video. you helped me alot

  • Good video, thanks

  • i wanted to connect my pc to my tv using a "DVI to hdmi adapter"(cause i dont have a HDMI socket on my PC.. )uhm. what is the purpose of the 2 pins that is located on the upper and lower part of the flat bladed pins? because i'm having trouble looking for a dvi-i cable, does it afffect the image(HD quality) if i use dvi-d dual link?thanks for this video. i'll be waiting for your reply.

  • Well explained, great presentation, thx 4 the effort, once again well done :)

  • Thanks Bro. THANKS BRO!

  • I have a dell optiplex sx280 and am trying to install duel monitors. It only has a DVI port on the back but software shows it can handle duel monitors. I purchased a 24+5 DVI-I Male to 2 VGA Female Adapter Splitter Cable but the computer doesn't see the second monitor. Do I have the wrong adapter cable or is there software I need to see the second VGA monitor? PLEASE HELP. Tried to contact Dell. BIG MISTAKE. Just like the moffia selling fire insurance. kcar11705@yahoo.com

  • @TheMrsFilms hi there, thanks for your comment, ah sorry to hear that, its annoying when you buy something only to realise its the wrong one. we have all done it. and had to go back to the shop and get the patronizing tome of the guy behind the counter when he say "what's the reason for returning" and you know he's "because I'm stupid and I got the wrong one". I hate that, yeah like he's have never done that.

thanks for your comment and your kind words.

    nice one!!!

  • does it make any differerence if i use dvi-d dual link to dvi-i dual link cable ???

    plz reply

  • Thank you a lot, thought that dvi all the same before you point there are not.

Gotta go buy one so i will be more attentive!

  • mate i think a DVI dual link cable "would" not fit in a DVI single link socket because of the extra pins right because it will not fit? (4:45 to 4-51)

  • fantastic explanation

  • i found a cable online it has the middle pins misssing ( 4:47) the bottom pic. but my monitor has a slot with all the holes like ( 6:08) will that cable witht he pins missing in the middle work on that slot.

ps- graphics card slot doesnt madder because i have the one at 5:55 so its compatible with all but my monitor isnt. would that work?

  • @maxamillion4536 if its missing the ones in the middle it wont fit

  • DVI is HDMI without sound right? So I can watch 1080p with DVI? I'm a bit cinfused.

  • @KingCorny93 yes they r both pure digital video

  • informative

  • Thanks for this. Very well done..

  • I have a DVI-D socket then got a DVI-I to VGA adapter then hooked up the VGA cable to my monitor. Then turned it on, but it went back off. I bent the 4 pins back. But then figured out the VGA was causing the trouble. Could it have been faulty?

  • Thanks so much, i kept looking for different kinds of monitor cables and couldnt find anything that looked like the ones i needed.

  • dude can i gt a dci unversal slot bt i have gt a vga slot in the monitoor what if i can get a dvi d to vga converter n plug to monitor will it be better performance that i have now

  • thanks mate

     very educational

  • I just got my new Acer x3900 and i've tried to connect it to my Acer P205H monitor and it's not working. I've connected the VGA cable and that's working fine, both power cables for monitor and computer are connected, but the monitor still says no input? Please help!

  • This is EXTREMELY clear and easy to understand. Thank you VERY MUCH!!

  • nice one ty!!!

  • my screen jumps when i play something in media player i have a dvi-i cable its a dell xps 600 can u help

  • Thx

  • @asyze1 no problem, thank you for your comment.

    nice one!!!

  • @viperfrank it is very helpful video

  • I've seen monitors with HDMI on them.Which do you think is better:DVI or HDMI.I kinda think HDMI because it looks perfect, whereas with DVI there can still be some slight problems with the quality.

  • Could someone tell me why is it that if I use my VGA cable with a DVI adaptor, it works fine. But if I use a DVI Cable, I set my monitor to DVI, but as soon as I reboot, it goes back to VGA and I lose the picture.

Shouldn't it keep the last imput used?

  • great video! Have a question for you. What is the difference between DVI-D and VGA?

  • hey man i need help i need to know if you can replace the entire vga port and all the other stuff in the back of the computer because i got a computer cheap and the back ports are dented and they dont work and i really dont want to replace the motherboard please message me

  • Great video- thanks!

  • YOu Rock maaan that was very useful keep up the good work

  • im pretty sure dual link cables are for ultra high res screens(2560x1600), not two screens. i don't even think dvi supports daisy chaining because the graphics card needs a special chip for each monitor its connected too, and most if not all have just two(displayport doesn't need this chip, so thats why you see graphics cards with 5 or 6 PD connectors). Just FYI, hdmi is just a miniaturized dvi-d connector with audio. HERES A TIP GUYS, if your ever in doubt, use a DVI-D cable.

  • Thank you very much you were very helpful with this video. Very thorough, very organized and you told us what we needed to know Thank you very much people like you are very appreciated on youtube.

  • do you get Jehovah's Witnesses at the door ??? thay are all NUTS

  • I bought DVI-I cable.. Graphics card has DVI universal monitor DVI-D :P

  • nice help man....was good that information ...thanks

  • Thank so much for making this video very helpful.

  • nice video dude... thanx

  • That was excellent!!

  • Thanks man, but sorry I'm still lost lol. I'm going to buy a UltraSharp Dell monitor it says under the connectivity; Digital Visual Interface - Digital (DVI-D)

Does this mean I can plug it into a GPU with a DVI-I?

On the bright side this Dell monitor comes with a DisplayPort cable I just need to find a GPU with a DP-port then.

    But still good video :)

  • @sinhalaboy thats ok even i get confuses some times.

yes you can plug dvi-d in dvi-i,so your monitor has dvi-d socket and your graphics card has a dvi-i socket so you will want to get a dvi-d cable (if it doesn't include one as some do) plug one it into your dvi-d socket on your monitor and other end into your cards dvi-i socket that will work. if you have a display port that great threes a big range of card coming out now with display ports and there quite cheap.

    hope this helped.

    nice one!!!

  • You're the best; ty...

  • Great information man

  • GREAT VIDEO!!! lots of info.

  • fantastic video. keep up the great work. you are a star ******

  • thanks for the help. great info.

  • good job, helped me too

  • Thanks very much. You have been very helpful mate. :)

  • We need a universal one adapter for everything. Like usb is for many devices. We need just one for computers. it used to be VGA till all this gay shit came out. Now they need to put all of them together for a super port

  • thanks.... about time some 1 helped me out

some wanker sold me DVI-I saying it was DVI-D (SCUM)

......... oh and cool wall lol

  • hey thanks much James, that was a very good explanation. saved a lot of time. I was scratching my head about this new graphics card, will receive it today, I just bought and it said it has a DVI-I slot (did not notice until after I saw the video that it is actually a DIV-I dual link) and I know for sure my monitor is having a DVI-D slot. So I think I will be good to go if I just connect that cable to the DVI-I dual link slot on the GPU

  • hey i have a single dvi-i port (dual link) but i cant find a cable to plug into my computer then the first moniter then into the second moniter on the same wire :S help me please! or could you do a tutorial on how to link 2 moniters up to a dvi-i dual link??

  • thanks for posting this!!

  • ya i just found out i need a dvi-i adapter for a 2nd monitor so i am doing research on it i think i have all i needed to know but when i found this video i learned that dvi-i is a HD plug i think i will put my better one (my main) in that one for that reason thanks for the help

  • tyvm!!!!

    helped me solve me problem!!!

    god bless you!!!

  • helped alot thanks mate!!!

  • @noidon30 thank you im glad this video was of some use to you. thank you for your comment and your kind words.

  • tyytytytytyt u saved me

  • im guessing you have an xfx gc,

    im i right?

  • pretty helphul thanks

  • Nice video James, simple and clear, a good exposition.

    Regards, Kev

  • Will a Dual-Link DVI-D give any better quality and speed over a Single-Link with only one monitor? or will it even make it worse?

  • TY you learn something new everyday, defently goin to come in handy when i get my 5870 and new monitor, cant wait

  • Hey James you room needs a new color paint job.

  • @1JerzBoy im sorry wat part of green screen didn't you understand :-l .

  • yeah! i chose the right stuff by luck. pure digital cable. but mine is a dvi to hdmi cable. plug dvi to my graphics card and hdmi to my lcd monitor. hell yeah

  • Hi James , Nice one & keep up the good work Dude :-)

  • my graphics card has a DVI-I slot and my monitor has a DVI-D slot how can i conect them? or do i need a new monitor

  • hi there, thats a nice simple set up and you wont need a new monitor. your card has a DVI-I slot so that will except any of the tree DVI cables and your monitor has a DVI-D slot, DVI-D will fit into a DVI-I. so all you need is a DVI-D cable.

plug one end into your monitor and the other end into your DVI-I slot (it will fit) and bingo simple as that!

if you need any more info there is another video on my channel that shows you how to do exactly what i just explained

    hope this helped.

    nice one!!!

  • @viperfrank just the answer i was looking for..... but you know i have another problem my benq g2420hdbl when boot up always shows the annoying Input D-Sub...... i heard its because im using an adapter vga to dvi-i in my graphics card.... if i use a dvi-d(from my flat screen) to dvi-i(graphics card) will that annoying pop up disappear always?... because i heard from chris pirillo video in youtube, it takes time for the info to be transmitted(it has to be converted).. so this maybe the problem...

  • hello i have a mini question.

Is there a difference between DVI-D cable and DVI-I cable performance wise? like my monitor has a DVI-D cable so im happy with that and i do have a dvi-D cable from my graphics card to my monitor.

For some reason i cannot do "Auto settings" option on my monitor ever since i installed dvi-d cable and i WAS Able to do it over VGA so please help

    (2 questions in there)

  • This was by far the most helpful video about DVI on youtube. Thank you so much! I had a bit of trouble and I was hoping you could explain something for me. I am running a macbook pro and used a dvi-d dual link to vga to my tv and for some reason the tv wouldn't recognize my computer. Then i bought a dvi-i single link and it worked... do you know why that happened? Are some TVs only compatible with certain DVIs?

  • thanks this helped me with my dvi-i and dvi-i dual link ty

  • excellent, I'm glad this was helpful, thank you for your comment and feed back.

    nice one!! :)

  • love the way you speak

  • thank you, i always thought i speak like a bit of a div, to be honest. but thatk you for your kind words.

    nice one!!! :)

  • very help full!

  • lol nice green screen :)

  • lol thanks, i knew painting the wall that color would come in handy one day.

    nice one

  • Yeah bought a cable for $30 from Walmart it was a DVI-D but it wasn't dual link. And my HDTV resolution wouldn't let it go above 600x420 or something like that and there was no sound. I have order a DVI-D Dual link from ebay with an HDMI adapter for my Xbox 360. Will it work? The TV input is DVI-D 24 +1 Pin Female.

  • hi there, yeah some HDTV's are a bit funny about DVI-D cables i have a PC in my living room and i have an Nvidia 8800 GT but i had to get a duel link cable for mine to work, so I'm guessing it's the same issue your having, it sorted mine out so it should be fine with what you have just ordered. with the audio side of things. unless your source is HDMI compatible the DVI cable wont stream audio just video. thanks for you comment.

    nice one!!!

  • Apparently my Maxent 42" HDTV has a feature called "TV Knows Best" meaning I can't set the quality or picture above standard which is a lousy 600x480. Although it has a seperate input red and white component for audio L and R in the DVI input on my TV.

    Noice Whun!

  • Very useful review. :)

  • Great video :D

  • Awesome! Thank you for taking the time to create this vid!

  • @ obesehairydog They do have a usb to dvi/hdmi cable where you can use a third monitor in case you have both ports on your gfx card in use. There are some videoes here on youtube about them.

  • i recently bought a new computer and bought a new moniter (22inch) and got a free dvi cable with it but there is not a connection in the back of by computer and its 1 and a half months old HELP ME!!!!!!!

  • Try adding a Graphic card m8.....

That will give u to plug your monitor DVI cable to it....

Contact your Known comp eng for video card details...

  • Thanks I understand this a lot better now

  • hi there jordan, yes a DVI-D cable will fit in a DVI-I socket.

    DVI-I can accommodate DVI-I, DVI-A and DVI-D.

    hope this helped.

    nice one!!!
