I was soooo excited that Natalie Portman was going to be playing Anne Boleyn. Then I was soooo disappointed at her portrayal in 'The Other Boleyn Girl.' I realize that some of it was the writing but her acting was just not up to par. She didn't *become* Anne as she became Nina in 'Black Swan' for example.
Now, I know 'The Tudors' is a bit...loose...with facts, but I really loved Natalie Dormer's Anne. IMO, she just got it.
I absolutely love Natalie Dormer as Anne Boleyn - have never seen someone acting like this! Amazing!! I started watching "The Tudors" after switch through the TV program and watching this last scene from season 2 coincidentally. I had never seen this show before and didn't know anything about it - but the last scene, where I saw Anne Boleyn executed was so shocked and i wanted to find out, what she had done to deserve that. I'm now much more interested in history than before - thanks Natalie ;)
Excellent videos. One of the best things about "The Tudors" was Natalie's performance as Anne Boleyn, which went from good in Season 1 to fantastic in Season 2. This said, my sentimental favorite - and the first actress I ever saw in the role - will remain Dame Dorothy Tutin.
I like both Natalie Portman and Natalie Dormer as Anne Boleyn. But I say Dormer had the edge, with out her playing Anne in 'the Tudors' I really don't think the show would have been such a hit. And in those first 2 seasons she just owned it, even though the show is essentially supposed to be about Henry VIII. It was not the same in the remaining seasons without her. And I'm glad Dormer appears much in the 2nd part of this video because out of them all she has the strongest execution speech.
Interesting that they included the scene where Henry VIII looks sad when he hears that Anne has been executed. In real life, I don't think Henry VIII mourned over Anne at all. He was just glad that he got rid of the damn bitch who couldn't give birth to a son and fooled around on him. Poor Anne! She was unjustly accused and couldn't do anything about it!
@chinagrrl you called her a damn bitch then you say poor anne i dont believe you have sympathy or her i think you dislike her and it shows when you said the damn bitch and i dont wanna hear that you was only speaking what he may have been thinkin i dont buy it shame on you
@donnylovesayesha1 Wow! I can't believe some people are so passionate about this! I'm only saying what Henry VIII was probably thinking. He never mourned over Anne Boleyn at all, as a matter of fact, he was off and running to Jane Seymour after he heard that Anne was executed! I have plenty of sympathy for Anne Boleyn, who as I wrote before, was unjustly accused of adultery.
so beautiful! i almost cried at the end. im glad you included Natalie Dormer in this one. I love her, and in my opinion she is the best Anne Boleyn! whenever i think of anne i think of her. But Genevieve Bujold runs a VERY close second. she's so wonderful too:)
i watched both long parts with my slower than snail connection just to see redgrave but she just appeared for 3 seconds in part 1 and not even one in part 2. what a dissapointment i must say
@ConfusedSponge unfortunately she only makes an uncredited cameo appearance as Anne in 'A Man for all Seasons,' and doesn't speak, so what you see is what you get!
@TheBullen1 Who is the actor that is at 9:27? I think he plays Cromwell or Cramner. I remember watching this in the 70's and had almost forgotten about it untill I stumbled across it on You Tube.
@gotch09 Bernard Hepton played Cranmer in both the BBC miniseries of 1970 and the 1973 film of Henry and his queens. In addition, he played the role for the Glenda Jackson series Elizabeth R in 1971. He does a great job in all three in my opinion, and Elizabeth R in particular captures his Protestant torch-carrying devotion in the scenes with the young and dying Edward VI. If you look up Gerlach Flich's portrait of the Archbishop, you'll see that Hepton actually looks a great deal like Cranmer.
Merle Oberon was the most beautiful Anne Boleyn I've ever seen. Charlotte Rampling was plain weird as Anne Boleyn, but I enjoyed her performance. Natalie Dormer broke my heart in the execution scene. All good portrayals! Thanks for making and posting this! It's very entertaining!
Fantastic work on both parts & major props for the compilation. I've been a Tudor fan since I childhood when I first read about a young Queen Elizabeth in one of my American history books. Her mother has always been equally fascinating to me and, along with Katherine Parr, may be my favorite of Henry's wives. My favorites: Natalie Dormer, Genevieve Bujold, Dorothy Tutin.
By the way, did you see Henny Porten's Anne in Lubitsch's Deception? I'm not fond of her Anne & I LOVE silent movies.
I'm an old man now and have seen them all; for me, Genevieve Bujold holds the prize. Although not the best indicator of such things, only Bujold was honored with both the Golden Globe win and an Academy Award nomination for her portrayal. All of these actresses captured bits and pieces of the real Anne beautifully. Merle Oberon was probably the closest in looks (a mon avis).
I think that for Anne's ending scenes, Natalie Dormer and Genevieve Bujold did it best - facing death with at the very least some bravery. Natalie Portman's performance fell a little short there, she was too shaky and freaked out.
Natalie Dormer was very good in the second season of the Tudors, not the first.
Natalie Portman and the other woman playing in the BBC "Other Boleyn Girl" were both terrible. It's fitting, somehow, given how awful that book/portrayal of Anne Boleyn was.
@coilxcept I am in agreement with you regarding Rampling and Bujold but in reverese order (sorry to the passionate Dormer/Portman corners, but agree there too!). I think it's a shame though that Charlotte was saddled with the myths of the large mole and "sixth" finger. Both stories were concocted posthumously by enemies and both if truly existing would have been mentioned frequently in contemporary letters and court calendars. The Spanish alone would've held the publishing monopoly!
I absolutely believe Genevieve Bujold did the best portrayal of Anne..she played her so perfectly, with passion and life! and looks exactly as she was purported to look like...what a beautiful woman! both Anne & Genevieve
Natalie Dormer did the best portrayal of Anne Boleyn and Genevieve Bujold is a close second. The Other Boleyn Girl's Anne Boleyn was the worst portrayal ever! The movie did the book no justice.
Anne Boleyn has always been my favourite of all of Henry's wives. Although most people do not agree i think that Natalie Portman did an amazing job as Anne. i don't think they could have found anyone more fit for her. at some parts she over acted but she did an amazing job. and Natalie Dormer WAS Anne. she portrayed her so well!
I know what you mean!!! I love Portman's work, but her Anne was just so...not Anne! And I agree with MrsHarkness too, Natalie Dormer is just brilliant. I don't think I'll be able to see any other Anne and be completely pleased for a hanful of years.
natalie dormer is the best anne in my opinion and Anne Boleyn really was a fascinating queen. One of the most fascinating women in history in my opinion
It is true that anne suddenly reverted back to the catholic faith, but most think this was to appease the spanish so they wouldn't hurt her child, or because she was under so much stress that she went back to the faith of her child hood. No one really believes that she meant it. I don't think it is a big deal. She was about to be excuted...things happen.
I am so in love with Anne and Elizabeth. My favorites for playing Anne were Genevieve Bujold and Natalie Dormer. TheBullen1, I have a question. Which of the stated Actresses/portrayals do you not like?
No, I'm NOT CONFUSING HER WITH ANNE OF CLEVES! IN THE SERIES "THE TUDORS", AT THE FINAL EPISODE, YOU SEE THE PART WHEN SHE IS PRAYING IN FRONT OF A CROSS!
You have to be kidding. "The Tudors"? You mean the most laughable historically inaccurate representation of 16th cent.ury England to have graced the small screen?
Anne Boleyn was known to support church reform, but there's little evidence that she was a strict over the top Protestant.
As to "PRAYING IN FRONT OF A CROSS", so what? That wasn't a litmus test for devout Roman Catholism back then. The avoidance of crosses and crucifixes was more of a 17th cent. Puritan ideal.
Oh, come on, dude! Just only calm down! It's a opinion about history; the history is full of truths and lies... So, I prefer left that at the time, don't you believe it?? All the movies have something of historical mistakes, so maybe the cross's question was just only a little bean of polemic about Anne Boleyn's figure or a big stupidity for part of Mchael Hirst.
She took a Catholic Mass before dying. She did this so she could make one last statement of innocence and defiance to her enimies. Basically she put her immortal soul on the line and in a time of such religeous fervor it was compelling to prove her innocence. It was really only a tool.
@guardianangel10 Can assure you that she's alive and well, and reading your paragraph. I don't think you would play with your soul like that... unless you don't believe in God, of course.
There is no fully satisfactory depiction of Anne. In spite of the inclusion of spurious deformities, I'm partial to Charlotte Rampling - she captures some of Anne's intense energy (sometimes edging into nervous energy), highstrung under extreme pressure, but also her elusive charm - The French accent and lithe elegance are right - the scene where Henry observes her playing with the dogs as their marriage collapses really seems "Anne" to me.
Glad you enjoyed.. while since i made this... but I did find it really difficult to do the execution sequence... really tragic stuff. Thanks for watching!
Thanks so much! Unfortunately I have a lovely subscriber that creates mulitiple profiles and rates me down.. so much so that It corrupted two of my vids that I had to remake! But thanks for the rating:) glad you enjoyed
every time i see her grave, i honestly really gets to me. She was an inspriational woman, a deeply religious, charasmatic and quite literally the greatest Queen Consort of England. One day I hope we can do her some justice, as her death was anything but
I really hope she is at peace... she certainly was inncoent of all crimes accused, and her death should be seen as the tragedy that it was. I would love a fitting memorial erected to her.. one day I pray
@TheBullen1 I would say that to the end she remained The Most Happy. And if people would remember her kindly despite that unkind end, I think that she would be pleased enough with that tribute. :)
So little Tudors... but I guess it is much harder to cut off clips from many episodes rather than from a one movie. :) I really enjoyed these two videos. The ending was beautifully made. pretty good. I think Nantlie's Portman had the most most realistic approach to her beheading.
