Le Carre's remark about US leaders needing to ensure that their people are frightened is a perceptive one. Herman Goering, Hitler's Reich Marschall, knew this too. He said (at the Neuremberg trials): '...the people can always be brought to the bidding of their leaders. This is easy. All you have to do is tell them they're being attacked, and to denounce them for their lack of patriotism and for exposing the country to danger. It works the same in every country.'
