@thuggie1 An official version of it will be available next year. Kino Lorber was finally able to clear all the rights issues with the music. There's supposedly a limited theatrical release planned for later this year, but only New York is being advertised. I'm certainly hoping Chicago gets it. Not only was it the first serious restoration attempt, it was also the first time anyone tried to use digital multichannel sound in a theatre.
@BassPlayerSusan I caught it myself at the Music Box in Chicago a couple weeks ago. I'd never seen it on the big screen before. Now I wish I'd seen it when it was first released, especially at the LA showings where they had the digital sound.
The best song from the best version of "Metropolis". There's more to restoring a silent film than getting all the footage and the technical bit. The decision to use sub titles instead of interrupting with dialog cards, running it at 24 fps and this great music...they were all the correct decisions.
Thanks Petie71. A beautiful song suitable for this gorgeous actress. I love this film and soundtrack. You have condensed all of the shots of the beauty into this vid.
Thank you so much for posting this music. I saw the 84 version when it came out. I can't figure out how you got the music, was it from the movie? Thank you again
Unfortunately, the only place is on a copy of Moroder's "Metropolis," but good luck finding it. The movie's been out of print for years, and it's highly unlikely to ever be released again since Kino International owns the rights to all of the footage. Your best bet would be to find either the Laserdisc or VHS Hi-Fi tape and dub the soundtrack from there, as I suspect this user did. But be prepared to pay crazy money for it on eBay.
Not that I have anything against Pat Benetar, but I loved the movie version of this song better than the soundtrack. Thanks for having this. Hoping that the movie will hit DVD soon!
Anybody know of a third version?? There was another posted here a few years ago. Not the one from the soundtrack, The version in question is much slower and Pat's range is higher. That version is awesome!!
I heard that they discovered the COMPLETE version of the film in Argentina, and that they're cleaning it up for DVD-- and possibly theatrical-- rerelease!
The almost complete version premiered February 12th at the Berlinale Festival in Berlin in the Friedrichstadt-Palast, live orchestrated by conductor Frank Strobel and his Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin. It could simultaneously be watched open air at Brandenburg Gate and in the "Alten Oper" in Frankfurt, as well as on Franco-German cultural TV channel ARTE.
The copy they found wasn't in its original state. It was edited and copied on a 16 mm negative. Almost all the scenes that have been missing since were contained except a couple of frames that are still missing.
Due to the fact that the original had been copied on that negative with all the scratches and dirt, it was not possible to clean that version up as properly as they did the rest in 2001.
Anyway, it was still worth watching and a real event to a cinema lover like myself. :-)
Still, they should keep hold of it until movie restoration techniques are a little more advanced; then hopefully it can finally be seen as it was meant to!
@MaskedMan66 Believe it or not, Maria's escape from Rotwang and the fight between Joh Frederson and Rotwang which led to that escape. Such a key moment, I can't believe the American editors cut it out. The Argentinian print and the New Zealand print was pretty damaged, and some of it couldn't be fixed. Wikipedia mentions that the climactic fight scene is missing a few frames. Overall, the re-edit is amazing.
I would also love to find the mp3 file for this version! That said, a DVD version of the Moroder version of Metropolis is in order. I have the restored version of the original . . . now it's time to complete the set.
petie71, thank you. i have been looking for the original giorgio moroder movie version of the song in futility for years. although the version you posted does not seem to be exactly the version it is brilliant. thank you, thank you. ( btw, i do not think the moroder's version of metropolis will ever see the light of the day )
the original version is on dvd and blu ray with 25 mins added and the 80s version is coming out next month

@jscottupton The recently-restored complete version of the film cannot be beat, but this is certainly the best treatment of the "chopped-up" version.

This is the movie's end title.
It's fantastic but it can't match the slow version Pat sang when Maria was seen the first time. OVERWHELMING!
The CD version is only a rerecorded version, very boring in my opinion opposite to the very touching movie versions!
