I think they just included the devil in the show to make it more interesting. That's my interpretation and it's just my opinion.

The myth of selling your soul to the devil for musical talent is very predominant in music history, especially among jazz and blues musicians (which can be heard in that fantastic piano at 1:40). I certainly agree that the music industry is draining on the metaphorical soul though.
