I haven't had this in years and years. My dear mother was Gujarati and she use to make this for me . You've brought me back so many happy memories, I can just taste it. I'm going to attempt this recipe and hope it turns out like mum used to make. Thank you so much
ps what is the make of your grinder? mine is very small and I can't find a nice one like yours.. tnx
I left India when I was 6. This is so exciting. I need to prepare myself psychologically to make this...starting with the list of ingredients...I am not indian yet part of me is. Preparing this dish is going to be my entrance door to my childhood and to all the tenderness I was given unconditionally.
It is just amazing how we humans transmit generosity and warmth through simple actions we may not be aware of.
This looks amazing. Thanks for making it so clear. Any suggestions for substitutions for papdi? And may I make a suggestion? It looks like you need to get your knives sharpened.
@GoliathAngelus the ginger, cilantro, chili, garlic should be available at any major grocery store in the US. As for the spices, if you're just starting to cook Indian food and can't find them locally - try online. Most of the spices will turn up again and again in other popular Indian recipes. There are a ton of places you can get them from. Personally, I went to an Indian grocer (I live in the midwest) and found everything that I need.
Hi Hetal and Anuja! Can I skip the garlic and make the chutney?I'm also thinking of baking&broiling the sweet potatoes in oven instead of the deep fry?
@priyamvadha123 : If you skip the garlic, it will change the flavor of the dish. Baking the sweet potatoes will work and will definitely be healthier :)
I LOVE you guys. This looks fantastic and am def going to make it.

@lupa402 : If you can't find the fresh Papdi, you can use either the frozen papdi beans (minus the pods) or if that also fails, skip it :(

@mouthsweet : You can cook them on the stove, just be gentle so they don't break apart and cook on low heat so they cook all the way thru.
