  • We all live in Paradise! Paradise is our world...we are destroying by making bad choices!

  • Beautiful and soul stirring. The stark contrast in a Tom Joad stripped down style. Of course while many songs on The Rising would never come to life if no 9/11. Never forgive Never Forget!

  • This song is about is about a suicide bomber.

  • and i wait for paradise love that'

  • Brilliant copy of Simon's The sound of silence

  • cette chanson est tellement belle ! MERCI Bruce!

  • makes me wanna kill myself its so fucking amazing

  • i played this over and over for hours and hours and cried for every single second this played

  • The song is clearly about a suicide bomber! The plastic and wire are bomb making materials !

  • It's been ten years. I was assigned a project and have to listen to this song. I've never heard it before and I know the album is dedicated to 9/11..so I was listening just now, thinking about a little girl or a grown man with a family at home whom dies due to 9/11. I am crying so hard right now.

  • sad song, any way you wish as to what the words mean. only bruce knows. but the saddest song is "your missing" i listened to it once and have it memorized and never listened to it again. i can't...only the boss could write such a song. i heard he was driving on the freeway 9/11 and pulled over to look. someone yelled at him "bruce we need you more than ever now" thus the rising album

  • Love the video locco1. Nice transitions. Great use of 8/16 MM reel footage. This song touches me deeply every time I listen. I have always thought of a man loosing his girl to a river death and him returning to see her .... over and over. Thanks again locco1.

  • omfg this is the greatest video i have ever seen. the pictures corresponded perfectly with the tone of the music. fantastic job

  • there is not one way to interpret a song. aside from the pure emotion that it makes you feel. the words you choose to describe what evokes it is completely up to you.

  • Verse 1 is referring to the tragedy of a culture that would use a child do destroy herself in a suicide bombing with the promise of paradise. Verse 2 is referencing the loss of a loved one to terrorism who is visited in a dream. The dream is, of course, as empty as the child's promised paradise. Stunningly beautiful.

  • what does he mean when he sings "I wait for a pair o` dice"?

    what dice?

what has this song to do with gambling?????

  • @lirumlarum777 no, he says "and i wait for paradise" lol

  • Congrats, Iocco. Nice Video. The final aprt when Brce sings: "I breake above your way... I feel the sun upon my face" ... with Patty Schialfa´s vocal behind... sonds like getting into heaven and finally seeing that girl who you waited all your life long... to see her again.

  • He was, still is and will be the best.

  • Where the river runs to black I take the schoolbooks from your pack Plastics, wire and your kiss The breath of eternity on your lips In the crowded marketplace I drift from face to face I hold my breath and close my eyes I hold my breath and close my eyes And I wait for paradise And I wait for paradise The Virginia hills have gone to brown Another day, another sun goin' down I visit you in another dream I visit you in another dream
  • Where the river runs to black

I take the schoolbooks from your pack

    Plastics, wire and your kiss

The breath of eternity on your lips

  • Suicide bombers? What a load of hooey! Who on earth started this foolish idea? This is a song about young love lost - has anyone actually asked The Boss what the song means?

  • Just gonna do my part here to clear up some misconceptions. According to the book Bruce Springsteen Halfway to Heaven and Just a Mile to Hell: "In the first verse, a young Palestinian suicide bomber contemplates his pending death, in the second verse, a Navy wife pines for her lost husband, presumably killed during the attack on the Pentagon, in the third and last verse, the singer hovers between the world of thee living and the world of the dead."

  • @Tigerpuffer Best explanation I've heard yet about the meaning of the song.

  • I've read that this song is sung from the perspective of one of the terrorists, believing paradise awaits him in death. The young girl imagery may be an attempt to capture their idea of virginal qualities. 'Empty as paradise". A very contemplative song, which seems to explore the possibility of doubting their own actions.

You're Missing is an equally powerful song sung from the perspective of a victim's family. I was kind of stunned the first time listening to that one.

  • amazing, though i expected nothing less from The Boss :)

  • Thanks locco1.

  • Beautifully crafted, I cannot think of a more harrowing acoustic song around. (Nothing Man comes close, though...)

  • Very different from the Bruce we're used to. that said, paradise is both haunting and beautiful, it gives me the chills.

  • @RossTheHick you're right this is the side of bruce that alot of people don't get to hear. he has written so many heartbreaking, haunting songs but the 'general public' and musos stay in the shallows and only associate him with the born in the usa era.their loss as he is always exploring and moving on, refelecting the world as he sees it.

  • Yeah.. to tell you the truth, i don't really care much for Born In The U.S.A as a song. It's too bad that's what the majority of people know him by, and not amazing epics like Jungleland and his earlier material. I only wonder what he'll do next, as his band is growing older and falls apart..

  • @A2Preservations I completely agree with you on the Born in the USA song etc... but i do not agree that the band is falling apart.... i think they are tighter now more than ever although Danny's death is a huge loss... bruce is timeless and as long as he has breath he will bring music to us and yes they are growing older but they will play on as long as their health allows them... Let's hope for many more years of bruce and the ESB!! There will never be anything to compare to them!

  • Absolutely beautiful

  • u6yttiyuuyitiuiyu

  • I visit you in another dream.

I visit you in another dream.

  • Possibly the saddest song ever. Heartbreakingly beautiful but very, very.sad

  • É uma lenda viva, Sou suspeito comentar alguma coisa, pois simplesmente para mim, é único.

  • What a great song this is. I discovered this song by incident.

  • Springsteen says so much with such economy.

'Another day another sun ging down': emptiness , deetachment, lonlieness, silence.

The phenomenally evocative alliteration in the 'water cool and clear'.

'I feel the sun upon my face': affirmation, acceptance, life, renewal rebirth. His symbolism and just FUKING amazing. He is a GOD!

  • its what he' s good at. he's scared of just sitting still and have rest.he wants to perform, wright, make music...saw it in documentary

  • @moonabys This is what he does!

  • Very Beautiful song. Never heard it before.

I think it sounds almost like "Ghost Of Tom Joad"....

  • yeah my thoughts exactly :-)

  • this song is stripping. pain is so universal. i love the references to water . . . living binds us together in the river of humanity.

  • It's hauntingly beautyful but golifies hadjis that kill innocent people by blowin their own ass up

  • It doesnt glorify jack shit. It is deeply sensitve to the tragedy that is the human experience and incredibly rich in pathos.

  • How?

Great art asks us to think about things we hadn't considered, or to to think about things in new ways. He has failed miserably in your case.

  • @youngPGR Man, I seldom, respond like this, but you're not worth saying anything to other than, you are a moron.

  • Ok, I finally realized that it is a suicide bomber, but still can't get why Virginia Hills has gone to brown? It cannot only be from a suicide-bombers perspective, or what?

Thank you for this beautifull post.

  • hills go brown in the autumn / winter :)

  • Great , beautiful and haunting song - the music is very much "pulled" and inspired from The Ghost of Tom" album - but still magnificent

  • This song is about a suicide bomber and is sung from his perspective

Plastic and wire in the kiss is the package holds his breath closes his eyes and detonates

  • I heard about two different interpretations. The other one is:

The first part is about a teenage girl who blew herself up in Jerusalem killing herself and several others.

The second part is about a Virginia widow who lost her husband at the Pentagon.

    so what is correct now?

  • I'd ask Bruce Springsteen, he probably knows it.

  • Best:D

  • I LOVE THIS SONG....:X

  • Music that makes a soul think, is

a trademark of Springsteen, agreed he is simply brilliant here..

  • I love it , the sad pull of the music and the meloncholy in each note.

The song is about a girl, plastic and wire in her kiss are BRACES. If you read however it is not soft nor light hearted he can "taste the void upon her lips", that is because folks, she is dead.

The void, is reference to death. Given the reference that he goes to the water to see her, he either commits suicide after the kiss or she is IN THE WATER when he goes to see her in the second part of the song.

  • thanks for your explaination and comment

  • @Iocco1 actually , its about a suicide bomber He uses her school bag to carry the explosives.

  • @funeralmarch It's about a suicide bomber in comparison to a westerner. No braces.

  • @funeralmarch. Dude, this is not about a girl with braces! Its a suicide bomber! he's kissing his daughter good-by. Plastics and wire are the bomb, he's borrowing her backpack. 2nd verse is about a 911 widow. 3 rd verse has a few interpritations...

  • @kmdoc I think you got it correct

  • @funeralmarch Hauntingly Beautiful! Bruce is a Lyrical genious....A Masterpiece!!!

  • @funeralmarch In the end he goes on... And I break above the waves.... i feel the sun upon my face.

  • @funeralmarch dude this is song is so awesome. and it kind of like nevermore dreaming neon black. the meaning is kind of same not the sound but you should check them out they are awesome.

  • @funeralmarch Sorry to say but that explanation is NOT correct. The first verse is about a suicide bomber. Plastic and wire. He borrows the backpack, possibly from his daughter, and kisses her before he leaves. But he uses it to blow himself up. In the crowded marketplace - he holds his breath and closes his eyes - and waits for paradise. Some also say it's the child herself blowing up. But either way, verse one, suicide bomber.

  • @funeralmarch It's about a young girl who is a suicide bomber.

  • She is a suicde bomber. They took her books out of her school bag. The wires are for the bomb. The void is her out of body commitment to die. She's in the marketplace to blow people up. The Father is underwater, drifting in his own death current until he breaks above the water and feels the light of the sun on his face again

  • It reminds me of my girlfriend

  • I was in NYC when 9/11 went down- I still don't get" it"..

  • The Boss is in Bergen!!

  • Best :D

  • This is the best song ever by the BOSS with out a doubt

  • Listen to the lyrics he talks of kissing a girl who has braces, and he speaks of Virgina. Not Suicide Bombings for Pete's Sake...

    Peace....

  • It is so good to see someone can actually interpert lyrics... Geez!

If you like this song, you might also like "Nebrasksa"

  • Sounds to me like a song from the perspective of a suicide bomber.

"I take the schoolbooks from your pack

    Plastics, wire and your kiss"

Plastics and wire in a backpack? - Bomb?

  • This is for The Rising what "The Weastler" was supposed to be for Working On A Dream. Though this song is so more dreamy, has so much more musically value, and sounds way more emotional, with way better lyrics. I genuinely think this is one of the best songs Bruce Springsteen has ever written. Whenever I listen to the "The Rising" album, I enjoy all the songs, but simultaneously, I'm waiting for that second to last song to play... Which is Paradise.

  • This is one of the best songs he ever made. makes my eyes go wet every time i hear it...

  • nice video. FANTASTIC song!

  • Lemonfairy,unser Lied

  • Nice video, nice song!

  • This was the song that made me start to listen to Bruce!! I was cycling to school one day and listening to it on my music player and thought it was such an amazing song I stopped to see who it was and listened to it for the rest of the day!! I now have all Bruce's records and think he is one of the best musicians around today!!

  • This is one of the songs that make me shiver when ever i listen to it. A great preformance & and a very good video to go with it.

  • really sad

  • I believe that this song was about both a suicide bomber and one who lost a victim to him.

  • @AllYourBase29 I believe you are right. I think he is contrasting two conceptions of paradise; that of a suicide bomber; with that of a westerner who is contemplating suicide because of the loss of a loved on, but who ultimately chooses life.

  • This song is very haunting no matter what it is about...just something about it :(

  • thanks for beautiful song and video.

  • My husband just recently passed away from suicide. We chose to play this song at his funeral. It was the perfect song to say good-bye to him.

  • My husband died through suicide too and three months previously my mother passed away. This song's music and the words do it for me...

  • I'm guessing the connection might be the lyric of the song and how it's supposedly about the "paradise" the suicide bombers thought they would find? I think that is what the song is about. I'm sorry for the loss these ladies have had...

  • this song was played at my husband's funeral a couple of months ago. It was the perfect song to say good-bye to him.

  • so very sorry for your loss. I hope you're well.

  • i love this song.

its so sad, it always makes me cry.

  • It´s so sad...

  • no this song is about a suicide bomber. there was an interview done i think and it was stated either by bruce himself or a producer that this is really abouta sucide bomber. just listen and ull get it

  • This whole album is about 911, this song is about a man who lost his kid. This being 9/11 08 I've been listening to the album all day. I've read that for each of these songs Springsteen interviewed survivors, this one is the hardest to listen to so sad but so beautiful too.

  • thanks zitight for all the informations :)

  • I think the song can be about a lot of things. I always thought it was about a man mourning his wife who died in 9/11. But I read that Bruce wrote it about a suicide bomber "in the crowded market place," "I hold my breath and close my eyes and wait for paradise." It is a beautiful song though, whatever it means to you.

  • I think the verse about the schoolbooks and the ribbons in her hair suggests a little girl.

  • So did I, but Bruce himself has said its about a suicide bomber.

  • actually, the song is about someone who's beloved died somehow or another, they believe that by killing themself they'll join their loved one in heaven. But then just as they are about to die, they realize that they might not be able to join them. Upon coming to this conclusion they decide against suicide.

  • i like this song alot, but isnt it about a suicde bomber?

  • Bravo bel video,bellissima canzone

  • grazie paga

  • I am surprised with which feeling and you can do this video has provided.

Yes paradise I my favorite song of Bruce and you has underlined it with this video

    Bravo Iocco 5 Stars

  • Dankeschoen Oase :)

  • very nice video and song of Bruce, thanks

  • thanks bruusie
