Before things like the code of Hammurabi (which were laws that taught us not to eat each other) and the 10 commandments (which taught us not to kill each other) religion has been used as a tool to civilize man away from our evolutionary tendencies. It has also been a tool to do the opposite. Mass control of money and people in order to do what we do best. Survival of the fittest.

Religion was a form of law used to control the masses for good but often used for purposes of evil. Evil is inside of our nature. Its been hard wired through evolution and survival of the fittest.
