I have a request or more like a quest, to find a piece of music from an early 70's UK show along the lines of Tomorrows World etc that used to show on ABC here in Australia.
The theme song has this heavy guitar riff similar to that later used by Motley Crue on their song Kick Start My Heart I think it is.
I've been trying to track it down for years. Since You Tube I've spent hours going through song lists of scores of mainly British bands from that early 70's era hoping to come accross it.
@lost4ausername If it was "Weekend World" which was broadcast from 1972 to the late 1980's (Peter Jay/ Brian Walden were the presenters) - the theme was "Nantucket Sleigh Ride" by Mountain. It's quite heavy rock piece.
I think using Kick Start from Crue is a bad example because the guitar riff I'm referring to only last for about 10 seconds at the start of the song.
The show I'm talking about is definately from the early seventies with the theme song based around a short stabbing guitar riff and if I remember correctly it also had a flute that came in, I guess at the main body of the tune. I was thinking JTull but no match on u tube.

Ah, the 70's. There was something about the program making back then that has been sadly lost and the title music was always brilliant. (weekend World, Panorama, World in Action etc) Reminds me of days off school and adverts for nature trails, historical sites and public information films - Class!!!!
My overriding memory of the series is watching Jacques Cousteau & the crewe of the Calypso every Sunday. Little did I realise that I would follow in his footsteps a decade or so later. The music also attracted me to Jethro Tull/Ian Anderson who is himself a wizard with a flute:)
The 1986 series editor was Tim Slessor, who then took charge of TWAU's sucessor series Wideworld, which ran on BBC2 from 1987 to 1990 as I recall, although that too was then cancelled.
How too, I agree with the sentiments of some other writers on here that The World About Us was great tv, unlike much of what is on nowadays, which seems to be a sign of the times I guess.
I have on VHS Video tape a start up of TWAU of a 1985 edition called Yemen-Roof of Arabia, although this was from 1990.
May I say thank you to revoxy for uploading this piece of music, which is great.
The World About Us was, of course, a BBC2 documentary series that ran from 1967 to 1986. For most of that time it was shown on a Sunday at 7.15 or 8.00pm, although some of the series were shown on a Friday at 7.45pm as I remember.
In 1983, the BBC changed the wildlife half of the series to The Natural World, which still runs today. The other more factual half lasted until 1986, when it was cancelled.
The piece was composed and performed by one of the world's preeminent film composers, John Scott.
In the 60s, Mr. Scott was the leader of a popular jazz quintet and the noted Johnny Scott Trio. Melody Maker, the premier British Pop music paper of the 20th Century (1926-2000), issued an annual Jazz poll. In the 60s, Mr. Scott was ranked as the best flute player for five consecutive years, and among the top three for the ten-year period.
The same Johnny Scott who wrote the happiest tune in the world, 'Glad Gadabout' (aka the theme music for the kids' programme Teddy Edward)? Brilliant!
One of the fist pieces I learned to play, although I had to play it in a different key since my flute was a 'C'. Still impressed my friends no end though though :)
Angel Delight, ! Ha -ha ! yeah I remember that ! Good times ! Forgot to add Whatever To The Likely Lads comedy! Oh, and Nerys Hughes in The Liver Birds. God, I used to think she was terrific ! lol
oh yeah, ski yoghurt!! wish i could find the orbit advert...get into orbit orbit orbit sugar free gum, for the cool lasting taste...and that ain't bad!!
Wow! You must be 38 as well!!!! That's all I remember from this series - there was no point trying to stay up any later because what followed was totally over my head and dull as fuck. There were only 2 other channels then, and there probably was nothing on them either.
I remember my dad used to play records when there was nothing on the telly.
I'm in my mid-30's too and it seems that most of us of our generation have retained better memories of childhood than say one of todays teenagers have.
On the other hand, i am quite drunk and may be talking balls!lol!
Cracking theme music. I'm lucky enough to have recorded a few of the programmes on VHS. Just a superb, content rich, documentary style that doesn't exist nowadays.
@politirel Very true. Many of these programmes used to be geared toward academics.Look at Horizon now as an example and compare it to 15 years ago never mind 35 years ago. It's almost catering for children and children who are not that smart and have a low attention span.
OH MY GOSH!!!! I can't believe this is on here. Brings back alot of childhood memories. My dad watched this too on sundays and I would always pause to watch the intro and listened to the music.
Thanks, never thought I would hear this opening theme again. Brings back memories of my first 625 line television (black & white) on which I saw these programmes.

The World About Us was indeed, repeated for a few years after it was cancelled, up to about 1991 or 92 if I remember rightly.
Thank you once more for such good memories-well done!

It sounds exactly as I remember it. Spooky.

It sounds like American jazz flautist Paul Horn, but I could be wrong. If you like stuff like this, you'll love his "Inside The Taj Mahal".
