Genius is effortless it seems. Great regret I haven't seen Neil live. Plays guitar so crisply and cleanly, great voice, swirling harmonica and such beautiful lyrics.
Listening to a music like this which time has buried deep into the recess of our brain suddenly wake us up triggering moments once forgotten to flood us with excitement and calm.... and joy and deep appreciation of the past wishing we were there again...
This song always makes me feel so old and sad. I feel my mortality so keenly when I listen to this song. Like picking at a sore, I feel the need to occasionally come back to listen to it...Masochistic, I guess. But yet such a lovely song...
@gluchnurse -Or perhaps, like the rest of us reading your posted comment while enjoying this song, you still feel 1973 as if it were yesterday and wonder what happened...
@Delivered0ne "The cute girl across the aisle in the tiny 5-room school tossing her golden amber hair as she played flute to the beat of my heart" Worst lyrics I have ever heard
@Uncle99B What an ass you are, those aren't lyrics, he was just sharing what his sugar mountain was in his youth. Let us all hear some of your moving lyrics, since you're so critical........
@TheHighestEagle. No sh&t genius. It was a bunch of cliched, pretentious, tripe that should offend the sensibilities of any down to earth person. Not you, it seems.
@Uncle99B I can tell by reading your page what young ignorant punk you are. Unfortunately you are way too young to know reality. The reason you have no fond childhood memories is because your ass still hurts from your upbringing, THAT clearly shows your shallow mind. Go trolling on another video like one of favorites, like war. This is just about music something you have no clue about!
@TheHighestEagle. Fond childhood memories? "The cute girl across the aisle in the tiny 5-room school tossing her golden amber hair as she played flute to the beat of my heart". You call that a true childhood memory? It is phony, pretentious, drivel.
I go to a sleep away camp called Camp Fuller every summer. This song is like the Camp Anthem. It's so amazing and every time i hear it i come so close to crying. It always makes me think of Camp Fuller. I love that place, it's become my real home. my first year there i hated it, and i couldnt wait to go home, but then one of the staff members played this song at the camp fire and i was stunned at the beauty. now i've been going for 6 summers in a row and will be eventually working there :)
If I just play 3 notes, I get copy right infringement violation warning and no sound on my video. Then I sharewared 50 songs and had a $50 bill on my credit card 10 years later and a Appletunes file on my computer appeared segregating those 50 songs. I think its called LOVE. Otherwise, you'd all be paying enough to buy a Cadillac now for stealing. It doesn't matter, any songs, videos and now movies you copy are stolen and the FBI can fine you also. I have no mercy on you, I paid the price.
years ago the first time i ever went camping alone i was just a teenager and i was way up in the mountains miles and miles from nowhere and afraid.... i kept singing this song in my head over and over till i fell asleep. It was awesome
Thanks for uploading this one. I was in 5th grade when the album Rust Never Sleeps came out and played it in my room over and over. Then in the early 80's I rented this on VHS from the rental store and watched in amazement as I finally saw what I had been hearing for so long. I drove my family crazy playing the VHS constantly til I had to return it to the rental store after 3 days. I wasn't allowed to rent it again, but I never forgot this great performance.
This is a great clip. I remember seeing him on this tour. He looks so young here. Great song about what happens to everyone - Lost Youth! But hey, life goes on......
Saw him a few years back in Chicago. Awesome... Neil will forever be on Sugar Mountain in his heart.......right along with me! Love Ya Neil...... Sunshine ;)
Is that a Taylor 12-string? This is one of my favorite Neil Young's song, and if you have not picked his recent release of Sugar Mountain (Live) it is an absolute MUST!!
DAMN I WANT TO BE LIKE THIS GUY SOOO FREAKIN BAD I'M ONLY 25 BUT I DON'T CARE FOR THE MUSIC NOW A DAY'S MY FATHER IN-LAW GAVE ME A VHS ABOUT 5 YEARS AGO IT WAS THIS WHOLE MOVIE RUST NEVER SLEEPS, I THINK FOR HALLOWEEN I'M GOING TO BE NEIL YOUNG.
One of the most musically pure chord progessions ever ....

Kind of reminds me of Jim Carrey - facially. Must be a common Canadian look.

My Sugar Mountain was a real place, back in 1970.
17 acres in the Santa Cruz mountains and my dog Bo
The old dumping spot down by the creek where I dug up 5 boxes of old bottles
Hiding under the footbridge over the stream running through the yard while guzzling a stolen can of beer
The cute girl across the aisle in the tiny 5-room school tossing her golden amber hair as she played flute to the beat of my heart
I will never forget smiling Jamie and my first kiss, there on Sugar Mountain

I've never connected with a musician's lyrics before like Neil Young's. It seems like you aren't human if you can't connect with them in some way.

@KCDEWH21 This performance is from October 22 1978 in San Francisco. Rust Never Sleeps was released in 1979. Hope that clears it up for you.
Neil Young was truly young here at 32 going on 33. A very poignant song about growing up too fast.
