Had a 5" barrel model 10 in the early 70s. Ended up selling it because then I didn't know a place to shoot it. Wish I still had it. The reason why law enforcement went to autos was because of the Florida shootout. A couple of FBI agents were killed. The bad guys had autos while the cops had revolvers. the cops would get shot while they were reloading.
I'm a gunsmith. I was just commenting on the relatively light recoil of the .38 Spl round. Recoil isn't necessarily good or bad... if you're trying to shoot accurately and rapidly it's bad. But for a fun day at the range I like a little more kick.
Besides, there's a reason police departments aren't carrying these around anymore. More kick comes with more firepower. My .45 ACP 1911 would perform much better than one of these revolvers. They're excellent guns, just not my choice for defense.
oh okay 1911 are good but think if your bullet or slide jams and you have to pry the bullet out and stuff with revolver thers no bullet jams and no slide to deal with but im not saying that i dont like semi autos i love hks
My Commander (carry 1911) will cycle empty cases from the magazine without jamming. I have also practiced clearing stovepipes, doublefeeds, and other semi-auto malfunctions. Revolvers - while more reliable, are NOT impervious to malfunction. They are also mechanical in nature, and every mechanism will fail at one time or another. Best thing to do is train for the situation - that means hitting your target and clearing malfunctions. If you cannot do either, you might as well not carry a gun.
It's a Smith & Wesson 357 Magnum Model 66, not 38 special, although you can fire 38 specials in a 357 Magnum but not the other way around. All around excellent revolver. This model used to be standard issue to Secret Service Agents before they went over to SIG 9mms. They had an awesome round for it,very effective. It's known as "The Treasury Load". It was a 110gr 38 special +P+ Hollow Point. Hot stuff and law enforcement restricted. Boxes show up for sale once in a while on the net or gun shows
.38's can have very mild recoil. If you're still concerned, try using a heavier gun with a longer barrel and shoot a round called a "wad cutter" (WC). WC's are designed for target shooting and are known for being the softest shooting rounds.
I prefer revolver for home defense. With a revolver..no jamming. You pull the trigger..it fires. I have a S&W snub 38 within arms reach at home..at all times. No..no children in home.
Shooting a revolver in single action doesn't "make the gun more accurate". It generally makes it easier to shoot the gun more accurately because of the lightened and shortened trigger pull.
A .38 with a barrel that short is very loud. Ear protection should always be worn.(even for a .22) It may not seem that loud but .22s can damage your ears over time. A .38 with a barrel that short can deafen you in much less time. Always wear ear protection. A .22 isn't a must have, but for a .38 yes.
Model 66 .38SPL? No such thing. The model 66 is a .357 Magnum that can shoot .38spl. I used to own two model 19s (the 2-1/2 snub and the 6" target with target trigger/hammer combo). The 66 was the same gun in stainless.
okie.. stop buying those mothersucking .38's get a .357 and you can still practice with .38's through it... not a cool gun... they didnt make the lady smith a .38 for nothing /:)
ohh you're a tough guy arent ya.. hell i wouldnt let ya shoot me at 100yards with a .22short.. im saying practice with your .38 special and then shoot .357 seriously... its not even like we can see your target. if you are going to post a video on the internet at least shoot the .357.. and no matter how much it shrivles your loins the smith and wesson ladysmith is chambered in .38 special cause its a lighter cartridge.. don't fret you can still keep your man card for supporting 2A..
a Mod 66 is a 357mag...

Very strong arm, but moves the gun a little on the shot, good shot technique, but you have to count the bullets that are in the drum ... XD

No Jams as long as you keep it clean, if they get filthy enough they can.

What load were you using?
I like the 2.5 inch barrel, but the muzzle flash using magnum rounds is too massive.

is that a single action revolver ?
ConfusedSponge 5 years ago
no he's only cocking it between rounds because he thinks it's fun.
RedSRTFour 4 years ago
actually, it makes the gun more accurate than firing in double action.
JTZ45 4 years ago
I do that with my 686 which has 7 shots
