I was only 13 when I first saw this video. I had just moved down under and this was all new. And Neil was so cool with his white shoes coming down the stairs.
I always have liked the sound of this 1981 pop track, has a good melody, the type that stays with you, and nice harmonious vocals also, an excellent 80's track that still sound great after nearly three decades.
I recently bought a greatest hits CD from them, and I was someone who was only familiar with a small handful of their songs, primarily from videos. I know of "Dirty Creature", "Six Months In A Leaky Boat", "I Got You", "History Never Repeats", and a few others, but when this song came on, it was as if I was hearing it for the first time. "One Step Ahead" is my favorite song by them, and the video was always clever, especially as the xylophonist begins to walk in place during the last bridge
I specifically remember the first day I saw this video on MTV. It was a beautiful August afternoon, and this wonderful song played. It stuck with me ever since. Its one of those songs and videos that "become part of you". I know I'm waxing poetic, but this song brings back wonderful memories. Very emotional. From reading the various comments, I see that I am not alone. Thanks to all who were honest with their feelings and posted their comments. It freed me up to be as honest.
I remember after watching the "One Step Ahead" video back in August of 81'...I FORCED my parents to take me to Tower Records and buy the "Waiata" album ("Corroboree" for the Antipodean consumers) Thanks for the video, Kydarth...Brought back good memories to me.
Oh man! All of a sudden, I'm a little pudgy 10 year-old back in summer of 81' and watching MTV videos. I now remember after watching this Split Enz video, I FORCED my parents to take my little fat ass to Tower Records and BUY the "Waiata" ("Corroboree" in Australia & New Zealand), album. I STILL have the vinyl LP to this very day...Mint condition. Thanks Kydarth for the video, brought back alot of good memories for me.
The Split Enz song "One Step Ahead" has the unique distinction of being played on the first day MTV was born. The video for "One Step Ahead" was number 26 of the first 62 videos MTV aired on its first day August 1, 1981.
I thought these guys were awesome, and man did I catch hell from the metalheads for it. If it weren't for MTV I probably wouldn't have heard this song...I never heard it on the radio. Thanks for posting the vid.
Agree -- back when MTV actually played videos. They were edgy and ahead of trends. Now, they are just acting as a life support machine for rap. I wish viacom would just create a "stupid reality network" and bring all genre of videos back to MTV.

Hmm... maybe something got mixed between switching it between PAL and NTSC. Different frame rates and all.
Still, why should we be surprised by a little speed-up? They ARE ... "One Step Ahead," nyuk nyuk. :oD
Awesome vid, BTW. Thanks for sharing it.

This video is why I had such a crush on Neil Finn all through the 80's and early 90's. :D
