This is absolutely glorious. I love Anna Netrebko so much. I like when MegaCavatina commented, "when Netrebko launched full tilt into "Giudice ad Anna" ...she set the opera on fire." That's exactly what happens. Callas, Caballe, Sills, etc, come on guys, why all the bitchiness? These the women are different, that's all and I think they would love Anna Netrebko.
Netrebko is not a Belcanto singer, she has not legato, pianissimo or vibrato and she's completly out of low notes. I don't like this Bolena. My opinion.
@ferrykalos Thank you, ferrykalos, this is exactly my opinion. She might be a giftes singer, with good techinique etc, but for me there is a great lack of drama! Just listen to her "Giudici, ad Anna..." at 9:17, there is for me no expression... and the cabaletta lacks the force in the bottom... sorry, but this is for me no real Belcanto heroine.

@Poetapersempre ma a quanto pare qua nessuno se ne rende conto...e la mancanza di voce non è nulla...vogliamo parlare della grande interpretazione drammatica??? Bhà...
Criticism is easy ... A. Netrebko is currently the greatest bel canto. Of course, Callas, Gencer, Sills. But listen, enjoy the breath, the timbre, the variety of colors ... Vive AN. Sublime.
beautiful belena i seen Anna 3 times live and she is great brava... but this role is till a MARIA CALLAS ROLE but im glad we have a great soprano today to bring this opera to life.
@MAPIAKALLAS read your comment...if you think Bolena is a Callas' role, how can you appreciate netrebko's? There's no drama, no passion, no low notes, not belcanto....
BRAVA, ANNA! On the first night, the premier night, the audience was very neutral and there was only some polite clapping throughout most of the First Act. It was this scene, when Netrebko launched full tilt into "Giudice ad Anna" (at 9:17) that she set the opera on fire. When the curtain came down on the First Act, the applause was thunderous. From then on no one looked back and the performance became the success it was and garnered 20 minutes of applause at its end. BRAVISSIMA, ANNA!
This singer has made a lot of money, but has certainly not developed any of her potential. That the powers that be have given this assignment to her is a travesty, and that critics are actually praising this just shows the sad state of affairs we are in.
I wonder where all the passion has gone these days. Is it that we all have too much to bother about anything much anymore? This is tired at best and if Callas were alive today sitting in a performance of this she'd walk out with steam coming out of her ears! Goodness me what a bore.
@Lindow Perfectly put. The standard of singing today has finally reached the bottom and now we enjoy mediocrity at its best. Before Beverly Sills died she lamented that singing standards had finally declined into mediocrity. The top comment with 17 thumbs up has said it all with the "Netrebko may not be able to sing the 'silly highF's or E flats" and proceeds to mention in his deliciously meritorious and prizewinning ignorance, 'wobbl yunsupported sopranos'.Enough to make a cat laugh?
In Callas' 1958 performance at La Scala (she was out of favor then - according to Ardoin/Fitzgerald), in the giudici scene "she hurled herself to the front of the stage, spitting out the lines directly at her audience... Callas was defending herself..." she "stared them down, dramatically surpassing anything she had ever done, singing with scorching brilliance." At the conclusion the audience went wild - now that is an opera itself.
I have seen (a long time ago) the Sutherland concert performance - I was never a fan on Sutherland - big voice but sloppy rhythmically.
I have the complete Callas recording - the sound is poor (a live performance from the 50s) but Callas is Callas and she is in good voice then. But in this scene the conductor takes the final part at breakneck speed and it is quite chaotic but exciting in its own way.
I just wish the singing was as beautiful as the costumes!
For me, the main thing missing is vocal charisma and a real specificity of approach based on italian bel canto principals. Netrebko's voice, and physicality, is quite beautiful, but everything about her approach is, for me, generic and pedestrian. The same can be said for the entire cast. Oh, for the days when singers were fat, unattractive, bad actors and exceptional vocal and musical talents!
Not a Bolena type of singer. In every way : there is no excitement in the way pf performing the overall scene, the technique is NOT italian which applies to some roles as Bolena, and how can she be out of breath after less than 2 seconds singing?
Great Adina and Mimì, which I saw, but NOT a Bolena
Also the high D at the end has NO meaning the way she does it, its just a pretty high note...

She (La Netrebko) is just beautiful and absolutely fantastic as a singing artist. And all these passions in this opera are getting so reasonable because of her and her rival (Garanca).
Netrebko is as wrong for this role as she was for Lucia. She doesn't even have a serviceable trill. The Met chooses to mount this for her when she has no idea what bel canto or Italianate technique is. Incredible, especially when Mariella Devia and Elena Moscu both of whom sing this role to perfection are kept out of the Met for people like this and the other house soprano. To each their own, but physical beauty doesn't cut it- voice does. Just my opinion- don't attack please- Ernesto
@semiramide1945 This is much better than her Lucia. Devia is not kept out of the Met, she is not interested in singing there (about Mosuc, I don't know)
@Wotan123456789 You know- anything is better than her Lucia. About Devia- I know she doesn't like transatlantic flying- who does?- but it's also true that Devia doesn't sing routine rep or with mediocre uninspired singers, she doesn't have to, opera houses come to her begging her to sing whatever she likes- she doesnt need the Met, thats for sure. Check out Elena Moscu here on you tube. I rather regret saying negative things as I know some wont like it. Its just my opinion- Ernesto
@semiramide1945 fair enough, I've cheered for Devia's Bolena on stage and on recordings (Mosuc isn't for me) but she wasn't vocally ideal for the role either! Singing a trill or an unwritten high Eflat isn't everything. Devia, Mosuc, Gruberova, Sills all lack the necessary weight the lower range of this role requires. Netrebko offers less precision in coloratura but more resonance in the entire range. I'm happy to enjoy all these very different singers in the same role for different reasons.
@Orfeus80 I think my main problem with Netrebko is that I just simply find her dull and uninvolved with the drama. I'm sure you're familiar with both Callas and Gencer in Bolena- especially Gencer who was so involved that in the Giudici scene that I have witnessed, she acheived a coup de teatre. Stunning. She and Callas were examples of not beautiful voices but who brought an excitement I don't hear from the Russian. I hope the stage director will help her achieve more dramatic involvement.
@semiramide1945 Don't attack please? You obviously have no problem attacking singers you don't care for, but heaven forbid your opinion might be scrutinized.
@eelco67 I don't believe I was attacking her. I believe I gave valid- in my opinion- reasons for disliking her interpretation and her extreme dullness and lack of dramatic involvement. Others have their own opinion and I shouldn't have used "Don't attack please", for that I apologize, but not for preferring other singers in this role. I also recognize she isn't schooled in the Italian method of singing. Not her fault. I hope the stage director at the Met makes this exciting for her..
They are AWFUL actors except D'Arcangelo and Garanca. It looks ridiculous although it's a beautiful scene. The queen's angriness isn't believable at all. Maybe the stage director is to blame?
D'Arcangelo is way overparted unfortunately. This role suits Netrebko wonderfully, I'm delighted to have a full-voiced Bolena and not wait for the high D to hear her.
It's a pity because D'Arcangelo voice is very beautifull but I must agree he's overparted. Don't like the tenor at all. There are a lot of them who could sing it much better, Garanca looks great. anna seems to be be improving some past problema and does a really nice work. She doesn't make us forget Caballe and Sills but she will get even better with time.
@Arrigo1971 I actually like Meli in this, I don't think many better tenors will agree to sing the role. hehe, Garanca looks great..well, yes, she's stunning (they all are in fact)...her singing lacks bite though. To be honest, I've already forgotten about Sills and Caballe in this role(who sadly did this too late in her career, she would/could have been my no1 Bolena) and I look forward to Netrebko's further improvement
Hi. I wasn't thinking in Caballé at la scalla Ana Bolena in the 80's where altough singing very beautifull in some moments she was past her prime. I was thinking in Caballé 60's RCA recital where she sings "al dolce guidarme" and the Caballé/Verret duets where the Ana Bolena duet must count as one of my greatest belcanto experiences.
@jmahlon Although a huge Devia fan, I'll admit that she certainly doesn't have a fuller voice than Netrebko and in this role she had many exceptional moments but was in many scenes drowned by the orchestra. Sutherland had a full voice on top but sounds hopeless in the middle and lower register phrases. Callas had a happier time with the registers but her constant placement problems are irritating. They all have their strenghts and weaknessses like every singer and we can enjoy them all..
I agree with the previous post. I don't quite like the baritone, he has a sick vibrato and pushes his voice in an unpleasant way. Anna has the appropriate voice colour for the role. Her high notes are always strong and secure.
OK. The bearded guy I don't like. The voice I mean the chest is great. I fear any time now he'll choke. Too much fuss for nothing. The woman-man I like.
The "divas- pair": The brunette, seductive, dark (the voice),deep and wholesome (the voice AND the bust, I hope opera lovers can appreciate beauty in other places as well...).Her intakes, her breaths captivating. At some point her agony had me hold my breath.Unique creature. But the blonde.Ah, the blonde is another story. My guess, she is perfect.
excellent. netrebko may not be able to sing the silly high F's or E flats like a coloratura soprano, but basically she has the voice and acting ability to pull off these dramatic bel canto roles in a way that we haven't seen in a very long time. i love that we finally have a bolena that doesn't have wobble or completely no support in the middle voice, which tends to be the case in all the old divas past their prime who tend to sing this music.
@ilfig1iomio How perceptive you are. Netrebko has managed to bring absolutely nothing to the table in true fashion. She is devoid of any form of any acting ability whatsoever , and middle voice, whatever that is supposed to mean and of course singularly lacking in acting ability. Wobble? Wobble did someone mention wobble???? Give me a singing actress with a wobble anyday than a boring ho de hum wanne be.
