Wow , just saw this for the first time. Superb catch of the effects of a roof collapse. Sad about the loss of that beautiful building.

That was not a backdraft. That was the fire being pushed out by the force of the collapse. Backdrafts are a rare condition and takes a specific set of circumstances to happen. Usually, if you can already see fire, there cant be a backdraft.

It's not a "Fidelity" building, it's THE Fidelity building... Obviously it was a old building which is "why it had a lot of history"... Also the building didn't fully collapse because obviously just the back end/roof did which destabalized that tower... Thus making it fall. Just because part of a building collapses doesn't mean the whole building will.

Most likely, the "explosion" is from the roof collapsing in the center of the building causing the fire to forcefully push out of the building as the rest of the upper floor collpases.

Wow, Indeed it was something I would not expect. Being from KC we are at times use to Fires. We had finished our day at the Aurora Ethanol plant we were building and headed for the square. Well we saw smoke. Aurora Fire did the best they could do. Though still to this day why did they not go to the attic where the fire started and use the fire escape in the alley way. No matter buildings built in this time period are tender boxes. You have 3 mins after that save the surrounding structures.

I live in Aurora and when the building collasped it brought my g-ma to tears because the spent a lot of nights at the Husky Haven and also, my neighbor almost broke his leg helping fight that fire and my best friends dad passed out because of heat exhaust...I think we need to think more highly of our firefighters because of what they do for us.

Its called defensive operations. The building was vacant, no use in risking firefighter's lives. Yes, you can put out a fire from the outside. I have done it with my department many times. We have a policy on vacant structure fires- don't go in.

Say they took your advice and sent in firefighters before they "spread the fire" so to speak. Every firefighter that went in probably would have been killed in the partial collapse of the structure.

i wouuld have to disagree with you there, squad45, i would say that there was infact a "backdraft". Backdrafts are not just in the movies they are infact real life things. imo if you look the building does not collape until there is like an explosion, like the oxygen starved fire finally getting some air and then blowing up, hence the backdraft resulting in the building collapsing. but that is just my opinion.

My friend , Doug Black, called me and told me about the fire. I live in Phoenix now and I too lived in Aurora in the late 60s and early 70s and spent many nights dancing at the Husky Haven, also. Who were the 2 boys that did it?

This is awesome video! How sad for the town of Aurora! I spent alot of week-ends dancing at the Husky Haven there in the late 60's. The square will never be the same!
