NASA has already done a lot for the preservation of the Earth. Not as much as they could, but then they're coopted as part of the military-industrial complex.

I apologize to be the tinfoil hat person here, but force them to release 'suppressed technologies'... these technologies need NOT to be developed! THEY ARE ALREADY (+10 years ago) DEVELOPED BY THE MILITARY-INDUSTRIAL-COMPLEX!
wow no one... I had that argument with a space fanatic the other day, rather than spending billions blowing stuff up in Mars why not use that money and the bright minds to actually find a bloody cure for AIDS or at least help the environment. Stop looking out there for another Earth, how about saving the one we are on. That Earth 2 is trillions of years away, by the time someone reaches it the human race is extinct. Time to think about here on Earth now. Things still being discovered in here.
Actually, you need to do both. Tackling some problems trying to get to Mars or wherever in outer space calls for techniques and materials you would not commonly think of while doing research on just Earth. Thanks to both these types of researches you can then take the fruits of those researches and apply them to the other part.
