Did you found that scene where Zalmie says good bye to his mom was heartbreaking and sad? i cried during that scene when i bought this movie on video when i was 16. It is up there with Grave of the Fireflies you think in terms of mature animated movies with realistic subject matter, if you liked this one check out Pink Floyd The Wall, seen that one? it's a similar adult animated movie as well.
@Johnlindsey289 Interesting that you asked this, because I just watched this movie tonight! Yeah, it's tragic. I agree that this is up there with Grave of the Fireflies. I have seen The Wall, though I don't remember everything about it. Very freaky, tripped out stuff though. The whole We Don't Need No Education segment really freaks me out. And I just watched Across the Universe, with a similarly freaky part during the military exam.
there were 3 movies in 97 that made me cry was this, Grave of the Fireflies and Titanic. Grave was sooo sad wasn't it and powerful? and since you like mature animated movies, you should review Princess Mononoke on here or Amazon.com sometime if you can rewatch it, that was an awesome movie wasn't it? also watch if you have time, "Ninja Scroll" which just rocks the house and influenced Kill Bill.
@Johnlindsey289 I'll definitely watch Ninja Scroll when I can fully devote my attention to it. Sometimes it seems like I watch a lot of other stuff instead of ones I could/should do reviews for on Amazon, but that's because I am just watching them casually as I do other work, or my sister puts them on, ha. I unfortunately don't remember Mononoke well enough right now to comment, but yes, Fireflies was excellent and soooo sad!
Does this rotoscoping technique in animation by Bakshi remind you of Robert Zemeckis and James Cameron when they did a similar modern version for the movies Polar Express, Beowulf, Christmas Carol and Avatar? looking forward to Tin-Tin? Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg are doing a rotoscopic CGI animated movie from WETA who did Avatar's Mocap technology as they prove that dead-eyes are no more.
My favorite Bakshi movie with Fire and Ice, Wizards, Heavy Traffic and Fritz The Cat. I think he's a genius of making a serious animated drama, if anyone liked this one they should check out "Grave of the Fireflies" and "Pink Floyd The Wall" for some similar movies.
American Pop is probably my favorite next to Coonskin.
Zalmie could sing but not write or play instruments, his son Benny could play piano but not sing or write, Tony could write but not play instruments or sing but his son Pete can do all three and eventually becomes a big star because of it.
Awesome movie!!!!!!

@Johnlindsey289 You're absolutely right, I aways make that analogy, btw, Final Fantasy the spirits within did it before Zemeckys corny Polar Express.

This movie is better than any music video. it is the ULTIMATE music video. Great review.

Should add "Coonskin" to your Ralph Bakshi Marathon; or is that all you got
JA268 2 years ago
He's already talked about "Coonskin" in one of his earlier videos. I forgot which one it was. It had to do with cult animation films.

I read in an interview that Ralph didn't like working with rotoscoping. It was, like you said, a money-saver.

I would say this is one of...if not the best Bakshi movie!
