Discovery was by far the best of all the shuttles. It flew both the 'Return to Flight' missions after the Columbia and Challenger accidents. It flew more missions than any space shuttle and was the flagship of the fleet for eight years after Columbia broke up in 2003. Shame NASA didn't give the last EVER shuttle mission to Discovery but its legacy will live on forever.
God bless you Discovery, thanks for all your work and farewell :(
No, this is not the last landing of the shuttle aircraft. The last landing actually happened in the middle of the night at kennedy international airport.
wow what a landing.everyone involved should feel very proud of such an historical and memorable 30 years, through the high's and deep low's i do believe that the 30 years of space exploration with this fleet will be the biggest benchmark ever and alway's will be. sad its the end though with no replacement. very proud of you all. wow.
It is wrong the shuttle is retiring, u know why - the challenger accident was caused by a faulty O ring in the r/h srb, and the columbia accident by the external tank breaking a piece of foam off. The space shuttle was never designed too re-enter the earth with a hole missing in its wing....likewise its UNBELIEVEABLE that nasa never gave the crews any repair kits if damage would occur - surely they'd know that the shuttle CANT safely reenter the earth with a hole in its wing. BAN NASA MANAGERS.
@twinturbonissan300zx You couldn't even repair that on the ground without sending it to a factory for a whole new wing assembly. How are they supposed to fix it on high orbit? How were they supposed to know it was even a damage issue? They can't meticulously check the entire ship prior to landing, EVAs are dangerous enough.
NASA is part of the government. It is runned by the government. Basically, this is why it's NASA.GOV- the GOV gives it away. You can read more info at NASA.gov
@EllieMM5 "runned" is not a word...see what I'm talking about with cutting education budgets as well as the space program?? Now we have kids with no dreams that can't spell. Wonderful.
@jibbi4one Same can be said for education. Cut day in my district is tomorrow. I might lose my job. No space program, no education for our kids.Yeah, we're right on track!!! :(
@hb2578 Sorry to hear that. Like I explained to my kid it's like a Tsunami it wiped away entire cities now look @ all the re-building & Tsunami prevention structures needed to planning & building. The American economic re-building will happen but under very different conditions. I predict the individual will have more liberty now to chose for themselves how they want to manage their life: PENSION PUBLIC &/or PRIVATE architectures, saving plans, health & work insurance, political participation.
@turkiskprawn - If a hunk of metal somehow writes you back with a cheery "Thank You", let me know, douchebag. Seriously, what possessed you to try and communicate with an inanimate object? Fuckwit..
Honestly the shuttle program has run it's course. It would have been cheaper and safer to continue building new Saturn V heavy lift rockets for every trip than a reusable platform like the shuttle.
It's funny how clowns keep coming on here blaming Obama for the retirement of this fleet. This has been in the works long before he came along. Airframes have a useful life and NASA already decided that the shuttles are past theirs we hardly ride on commercial jets built in the early 80s in 2011, and the shuttles have endured far more operating stress than airliners. Discovery, we will miss you!
Thank you, Discovery. After the loss of Columbia and Challenger, you became the flagship of the fleet. After a distinguished and celebrated career, you deserve a hero's welcome. I saw you launch last spring and next I hope to visit you wherever you are displayed with pride.
blame government for over regulating and the purposeful destruction of the economy so we allegedly dont have the money to pay for this stuff anymore but we got plenty for humvees to get blown up by roadside bombs while the average soldier has never seen someone with a gun in the last 3 years
The NASA is not the Government, if it was they'd set whatever budget they would like, this is sadly not the truth, their budget has been progressively declining since the Apollo program. All the while Military expenditure has increasing taken a bigger bite out of the federal budget.
@DICSPICS1207 Uhhh, Bush cancelled the Shuttle. You're probably one of those, as usual, uneducated right-wingers (as most are, that's their target demo) who thinks that Wall Street and Detroit was bailed out by Obama too... which, you'd be wrong, that too was Bushie. But hey, keep voting for the GOP, they're the ones that truly drove up the US deficits time and time again and bankrupted the country, they need ignorant people like you as sheep.
It's interesting to see how this affects those who have or had no part in it. I did and I can say that taking this away is a devastation for this great nation. It will take years to rebuild what was taken away so quickly. The idea was to have a more modern and sofisticated orbiter once the Shuttle missions ended. Instead, we are going to pay the Russians 60 million dollars for giving us a piggy back ride into space. How ridiculous having the resources in our own backyard. Way to go NASA!
Shinjuthief: I couldn't agree with you more. We are heading in the wrong direction. It is so sad how something so important for this country could be destroyed so quickly. If we continue this, we will be the next socialist country. Greatly said.
End of America's space program. Thanks Obama!! Now we can just have more welfare scumbags & occupy movements! Yippie!!

@ColinNekritz Perhaps, but funding for NASA was cut by Mr. Obama. They're all criminals, why argue for/against any of them.
