The fact behind every business is that they have to make money to survive. Just because a business wants to exchange products and services for money doesn't make the business bad.
If a business offers free products, then that's charity! They aren't making money off the deal. Sure, to some extent you can argue that marketing is being done, but it isn't widespread marketing that'll affect consumption of Microsoft products.

Most really intelligent people find better things to do with their life than become obscenely rich. That is why people like Shakespeare, Plato, Einstein, Beethoven, etc. are remembered to this day despite the fact that they never made great amounts of money. That is why Keith Richards is rich but will (hopefully) be forgotten. Money is a poor substitute for truly living.

@Anglagard1 We all know the recipe for financial success in life. The first rule is to inherit it, which Gates pretty much did. I graduated from college and surely would have graduated from Harvard had I ever in my wildest dreams had the opportunity. Gates was born into money but more than that was in a great situation that he exploited fully. His mommy was and exec at IBM and his daddy was a lawyer. The combination allowed him to sell a crappy product to IBM to his immense profit.
