I was lucky enough to see her first countess/Marriage of Figaro/Glyndebourne in 1971, it was a dream : she was so beautiful and had such a magnificent voice. A bit later she sang Faust at Covent Garden. And I saw her a couple of years ago in Athens, the voice was still beautiful.
What is this I am reading? First of all, to those like me who have heard Kiri in recital and preformance, she hasnt lost that easy way her voice fills the room. Second, by her own admition, Spanish and German are not her strongest languages and finally, WIH did you expect from her...1982 or something? Technically and vocally, KTK can still hold her own with those 1/2 her age and will be singing long after those kids leave the stage! Brava Kiri!
I was lucky enough to hear this first hand on the opening night. The most wonderful thing was that her voice rang throught the auditorium, seemingly effortlessly. Bliss.

Just horrible, first it's not a tango but a "vidalita" (not a "vidiliry") and her diction is just horrendous, she doesn't know what she is singing as usual....
I was a student of Maestro Ginastera,he would have turned in his grave to hear this ..I love Kiri but this is not musically wrong but her Argentinian Spanish is simply disastrous..Like you artbowl l love the ''vidaliry''..Wrong choice of song .
@marioegorga Have to agree with you about her Spanish!!! When I first heard the song on the Kiri & Karl CD, that was my first objection...and it is not a flirtatious poem, but rather inward and reflective. Great song, but wonder about its use in this opera, too. Doesn't really work for me on any level...except for her vocal beauty.
@Gav640 And I was there too...from the parterre when she sang this melody starting from 2:39-on the sound was incredibly warm and round. Not voiceless in any way.
I m enchanted. Hows it possible to turn Italian music with Argentinean touch into a real French chic thing? Thanks leoperarm (especially for the right picture). Its also such a pleasure to read comments of the people who share Kiris charm with you. As for Arbol del Olvido may Argentina take this as a fine tango paragon for the future ;)
Personellement pour Kiri ;) - Je suis enchanté ;) Un verre du meilleur Bordeaux a la meilleure chatte du MET (and pardon my French ;)
A week ago I saw the performance twice at the MET. Kiri is still a real personality on stage, beautiful woman with a sense of humour - it was a great event for me to see her on stage, no matter that she is a bit voiceless today, she remains to be one of the last... BRAVA!
What the heck was she doing that was making so many people laugh? I don't know that I would describe her as "voiceless". Maybe "thin-voiced", but that is to be expected at her age.
Dame Kiri is by no means "voiceless"! Having seen( and heard) her in recital not too long ago, I can say that her voice has changed a bit, but certainly NOT for the worst. If you read her interview in Opera News, you would know that she was deliberately keeping things light and funny because she realized that she had a tiny, cameo role and she did not want to detract from the the true leading roles.
Look, I respect her and I am her fan, but in comparison with her best years, the voice has gone. That´s normal, that´s nature... She still sings, of course, she looks fenomenal, and it was great to see her again, but if she was talking about "things light and funny", she knew why she said that... Again - great respect for her!
I saw her in recital not long ago and she was hardly voiceless. She still has the creamy instantly recognizable sound. She has taken very good of her voice and is proving that one can sing for a very long time if one sings with excellent technique and is careful to sing the right stuff.
@33blueberries. I have heard singers with wobbles so bad that it sounds like they are trilling on every note. I certainly have never heard anything from Dame Kiri.
Living in Texas we hear a lot of Ginastera espically here in the Dallas Opera. Kiri's Spanish was never that great but she does give it a good try. She (and Leontyne) sound amazing still! I thank you for a great comment on Ginastera and KTK. Love her here in the Big D as well. Thanks for posting.
Thanks, though you beat me to it - I was going to upload this;). It would have been fun to actually have been there, too bad I missed it! Thanks to cbc2 for the broadcast! :)
No, it's great that you uploaded it and the other parts too, with the beautiful pictures. The main thing is that it is here for more people to enjoy. It is a great cast!
@leoperarm Thankyou very much for this! I have no idea why Kiri had her farewell tour 2 years ago, certainly she has no need of that! This year she is also singing Marschallin again I believe, at Colon or Cologne I can't remember, but certainly someting to look forward to.
May I ask how you record a Met broadcast? I've always wanted to record entire broadcasts to listen again and again and again and again but never knew which program to use :)
I tried to DVR it but it came in scrambled and unplayable. I guess one must put a camera in front of a telecast and record it that way. The radio broadcasts I just place in a disc and record from the hard drive on my laptop using the local classical radio station's internet gadget. I think that the Met itself sells the previous season's telecast in DVD/Blu-ray but I am not sure. Hope that wasnt confusing?
It's an HONOR for Fille's protagonists to have as a special guest star such as a Dam KTK!

What a terrible choice of song, and the Dame's voice is clearly not what it used to be.

@vocalissimo1
It is a comic Opera, so she could have been exaggerating.

Wow... that was just great.
I'm argentinian and that was an argentinian song written by Ginastera: El arbol del olvido
Her pronouciation is not that good, but I can't help loving her... She sounds amazing!
