As a college student, I have to appologize for those of my ilk who were so brainwashed by the public schools that they think they have a right to a job. One of my classmates mentioned this to me, and I had to explain basic capitalizm to him. 1. You DON'T have any RIGHT to my money. Someone can choose to pay you for doing something, you can choose whether or not to accept that. That's what free market is all about.
OWS isnt socialst all there doing is asking for the rich to pay there fair share of taxes since the rich are all getting the tax cuts while the middle class is left to suffer, the big banks and corporations are buying our politicians out. I hardly call calling that to end socialist.
........But a new OWS is forming, One that uses Salinskys Rules for Radicals against the Democrats.
One tht hold Democrats and Obama to their stated principles. They are against all corps , all successful , ....they should not be allowed to take their donations...
They rally against war , they should not be allowed to bomb Libya for 9 months and call it a humanitarian effort.
This guy has talked up the Tea Party protests, taking to the streets, speaking out against government spending and especially the bail-outs, etc. But because OWS can be seen as a liberal thing, which it isn't, they're wrong for whatever reason he can desperately rationalize.
It's the most obvious, pathetic example of politics influencing a person's opinions.
@oogaboogan No, it's because the OWS is a anti freedom thing . They dont go after corporatism by rallying against Obama , they attack all corps as if all of them are evil.
So just to recap: If a bunch of people take to the streets to try to change their country, that's bad. Unless they wear tea bags on their heads and call the president the n-word, then they're PATRIOTS.
Oh, yeah, also everyone involved in OWS owns 500 iPods and worships Karl Marx or something. Whatever nonsense you guys have to come up with to justify your hatred of the OWS protestors, right?
@Porcupineracer I have no trouble with people attempting to change the country, after all that's what democracy is. However, the irony of the OWS movement cannot be denied. The majority of OWS protestors are college students who, upon entering the real world were shocked to find that they needed more than just an education to pay off their student loans, they needed marketable skills. SO, rather than getting marketable skills, they're whining.
the thing that gets me the most is my siblings and i worked 2-3 jobs to pay for college, an apartment, and food. sometimes we wouldn't use electricity for a few months, it is winter and we're not using heat either, since we can't afford it, we won't use it. i really do not feel a need to complain to other people though that i live below the poverty line. i'm debt free, about to graduate college, and have jobs lined up after college. OWS needs to get over themselves
@Kalamitysax yeah. i do wish i had more time to dedicate to studying and learning, but i'm graduating with honors and job offers with no debt. can't really complain over all.
@JumpStreetHobo So because you BARELY eaked by with almost no money, you expect everyone else to be able to get 2-3 jobs EACH in this fucking economy?
Congratulations for being LUCKY enough to get hired at more than one place at a time. Do you actually think everyone involved in OWS has never tried to get a job before? Now you're just being as idiotic as "molotov" (lmfao at the ridiculous moniker).
@oogaboogan no doubt most people have tried to get a job and i am not saying there is no need for reforms in our tax code and in regulations on both workers and businesses. I am saying there are jobs and ways to prep yourself and build yourself up even in rough economic times. Using internships and volunteering i have jobs above entry level that cover my school bills and my living expenses. i've been unemployed months at a time while looking for jobs, it sucks, i do understand that.
@deathfish3000 you're thinking about the book a modest proposal. what you're advocating has already been advocated in an attempt at political satire in Ireland about 150 years ago.
@death9719 Uh... thanks? Sorry, but you've done nothing to convince me that 'state socialism' (which we already have to an extent in America, what with SS/Medicaid/Medicare) is in my economic or spiritual interests.
As it stands, I'll burn oppose you and your kind with every tool at my disposal, including accurate long range rifle fire.
@Halo4Lyf i'm seeking my society not by revolution but by secession, revolution is forcing your views on the minority, secession is the individual leaving a system he dislikes and creating a new one, it is a human right.
@death9719 i am not a state socialist, i am a volunteerist, i believe that all human interactions and associations should be voluntary, which is why i oppose the state, i believe that people should be aloud to build whatever society they wish, providing they don't force anyone to associate with them and justly (non violently) gain the land they set it up on. the state is a monopoly on violence that has done no good to humanity, we live in the matrix of statism
@death9719 So you're an anarchist? Because you're describing a society that utterly lacks law - you can't defend people's right not to be coerced, nor defend the rights to property without some sort of mechanism that is known as 'the state.'
That's what the whole American concept of government is, that government (the 'state') exists to preserve liberty via the rule of law. It can be abused, sure, but it's better than the anarchy you are proposing.
@death9719 a governments job is supposedly to protect freedom, but its existence is the opposite of freedom, you can't have a monopoly on police and courts and claim to be protecting freedom the US government by and for the people (if it worked, by and for the majority) is waging 2 gang wars (with enemies we created), imposes imperialistic bases over seas, and has built a global, nearly uncontested empire. we don't have free and fair elections, lobbyists own "our leaders"
@death9719 the premise of voluntaryism is that you own yourself, and you have the right to do what you want provided you don't infringe on another trying to do the same.
the principle of statism is that the state owns you and has the right to infringe on your rights
The problem with ppl who advocate for socialism over capitalism always compares ideal socialism to real world capitalism. That's not fair; however, I would still argue that real world capitalism is still better than ideal socialism.
So corporate greed is bad and evil, but hipsters who spend all of their money in ipads, laptops, starbucks, and borrow tens of thousands of dollars and inflate the currency is okay?
@aristotlestudent yes, it is.....the question is, what can we, the working class, the class that does most of the living and paying and dying in this country, do about it?
go to germany to get free education and then get a job, and feel free how "wonderful" to be living in social country, when u can only bring 55% of ur salary...
Demanding that the taxpayer pick up the tab for all student debt = free college for everyone, meaning everyone has a degree, so no advantage in going to college. Which of course defeats the whole point of having a college degree in the first place. Logic is a bitch. College is suppose to prepare you for life but, instead has become a place to hide from the reality of real life (working) or (paying taxes). Hows that hope and change working out for ya?
@YhwhKhaiMostHigh capitalism did not ruin our economy, not because its bad but because our system is not capitalism. a system in which the wealthy use the states monopoly on police and courts in order to buy there way to even more wealth, in which the extortion of taxes are used to keep the middle and lower classes down. in which armed militias give us diamonds. in which our dons send gangbangers in camo to iraq, in which we must learn how great our slavers are, this is the farm we were born on
And Student Debt? What about myself, where I am paying off my wife's debt ahead of time, just to rid the debt from my books? Or the parents that are middle class, struggling to stay afloat but pay for their kid's college tuition and the kids work to go to school? What do they get? Giving anything out creates jealousy. And this video is spot on.
Another Mises quote, along the lines of "Government produces nothing, therefore in order for Government to provide something, it must first take wealth away from someone more efficient."
Socialism is a horrid fallacy of utopian ideals, where nobody needs money to buy goods, and everyone can work to live in their own home and get free food. You can't give something, or ANYTHING, out, without being unfair to a larger amount of people.
I like the Friedman reference....as Ludwig von Mises once said, there is no way, what-so-ever, any way to have any mix of socialism and capitalism without an excessive abuse of either system. To allow socialist policies, like subsidizing clean energy and denying oil drilling and clean coal, you falsify the price of energy and waste a ton of wealth feeding these subsidized corporations that would never survive in a real market.
China. Look at their energy. We buy everything they make. Amen
In a capitalist economic system, the best way to not get ripped off is simply to say a two letter word those who want to rip you off and are greedy. That word is "NO!" This answer makes it possible to disinfect the greed of people in a free market.
With a socialist economic system... Well, Obama has this slogan of "Yes We Can" never stopping to think if the American people are saying "No We Don't Want To" to his policies. All of the sudden you saying "NO" doesn't matter.
For those of you who think that the US is Socialist because of Government subsidies, and taxation/tax cuts, look at the lobbyists. This is Merchantism, and the Government is on the take. The POTUS is not the most powerful person in the world, Mr. Obama has a entourage of advisers and speech writers that tell him what to do, and what to say. I bet he doesn't even pick out his own underwear.
I'm not a Capitalist, or a Socialist, but if I had to choose one I'd have to go with Capitalism, just because I don't trust the government to get my coffee order right. With that said the problem with Capitalism (or more percisely Merchantism, which is what we have in US) is the consolidation of power. The Bankers, and fortune 500 companies run this economy not some fictional "Invisible Hand." And they are just driving up prices to turn the "Working Class" into Peons/Peasants.
Furthermore every economic system requires capital (aka the means of production) to exist. The biggest question is, who's hands the capital resides in. In a free market system the capital is owned privately to varying degrees, but socialism, fascism, authoritarianism, etc, etc... the capital and everything derived from it whether it be land, tolls or even human capital belongs to the ruling authority. The other side of the same token is Anarchy, which is just as dangerous.
I'm tired of the Robin hood argument of the socialist movement. Robin was not a socialist he wasn't just taking money from the rich because he was jealous and wanted what they had. He was taking the money the government(Prince John) took from the people and gave it back to them. It was their money to begin with! Prince John was the socialist not Robin Hood!
