The Tabernacle has about 14,000 pipes. Only a few on the facade are not working pipes, but most are working pipes, even the wood ones. There are also pipes in the back of the Tabernacle behind the audience, although they can't be seen unless you are on the second level looking directly at them. The Conference Center across the street has between 7,000 and 8,000 pipes. I used to work in both buildings and have been up close to both organs.

The facade pipes are mostly speaking pipes, especially the large 32s in the tower. I was guest organist at the Mormon Tabernacle in my student days in the late 1970s, and it's one of the most comfortable consoles I've played in my entire career. Beautiful sound, wonderful room, wonderful people.

I know Jack Bethards of Schoenstein did a major overhaul of the instrument a few years ago, but I don't think he took any of the pipes with him when he left. Methinks you don't know what you're talking about.
If you mean the largest facade pipes, then yes, they don't speak. They're not in use in the organs most recent incarnations, as Joseph Ridges talents did not extend to voicing wooden principal pipes (the big facade pipes are wood). In other words, like many large organs the Mormon Tabernacle instrument is "screened" by the original facade. But be assured, there's a 10,000 pipe plus organ behind there! I'm not sure when they were put out of commission. Perhaps by Austin or Kimball, pre-A-S?

However the 10,000 pipes behind the case work are speaking pipes...
At any rate, the organ is a joy to hear, no matter whether one listens to it on the weekly radio/tv broadcast program or on CDs or DVDs...
