What I love about Mr. Waits is that he doesn't play for other people he plays for himself. To all the greatest artists their art form is a hobby, with which they made money, got famous and had brilliant lives. Hopefully we all get that satisfaction.
I have a drug dealer who sells me a specific kind of weed. Its called waits...Its hard to get used to at first. Once you've tried it though...there isnt anything like it.
@markmarktarmanni " brawlers, babes bastards." painful to listen to . his voice is so rough, somehow much harsher sounding than before., w/o the same control
(how it got any rougher without self destructing is another mystery). i am serious. he could lose it entirely if he's not careful. progression from "ol 55" thru the end of the 70's those tours and that louis armstrong thing expanded his sound, but imagine the nodes on his vocal chords.i think he should protect what he's got left.
@markmarktarmann Yeah, maybe he has lost a bit of control, sp on some of the slower ballads... But on the other hand, his growl isn't as strained or artificial-sounding as it was on the 70's IMHO... And he seems to be on better voice on the Bad As Me album. Besides, some people can sustain an insane amount of vocal punishment. I mean look at Brian Johnson, for God's sake!
i also heard joe bonamassa's cover a few days ago and i think he really covered it!!! he made a blues version of the song and didn't t try to be heard like Tom ( thank god,Tom is only one)
I first heard Tom Waits in the mid 1970s when "The Piano Has Been Drinking" came out. It got a lot of airplay on WNEW-FM back then. I've been hooked ever since. He's awesome!
Does anyone know if a version of this song was recorded with a similar arrangement and 'gruff' voice. I can only find the track on the album "Rain Dogs" and its not like this. I would love to listen to a good quality copy without the cracklyness.
I only discovered this guy the other week (I am sheltered musically) when I heard the track "Walk away" on the end of a prison documentary. Now i'm hooked.
Usually people either love or hate Waits (I love him). But you have to have an open mind. He's in no way traditional. He doesn't so much use his voice to sing as he plays it like another instrument with more valves than you can shake a stick at. He looks and acts like he does because he's similar to others (Bowie, etc.) in that they act how they play when the mood strikes. And all that aside, read his lyrics. Some of the best ever.
I don't see why his voice is a problem . . . It's like the distortion you get on an electric guitar; it's not as 'clear' as an acoustic guitar but it's all good.
shadowofmorgoth: another guy that proves accordion can be badass is the Finnish Kimmo Pohjonen. Be advised it has nothing to do with Tom Waits, but equally cool for the instrument. :D
Wow, cool cuban flavor to the tune. When I saw him in '98 he played it just like how it is on the album. The guitarist Smokey played Ribot's part perfectly.
Uau! You must be one huge fucking retard. Thrust me I know retards and you just blew up my scale. he thinks he is good? Wanna tell us where you got that from? I could write 40things that would show everyone (and remind you) what an idiot you are, BUT I believe that the best thing to do to someone like you is to ignore. There are so many idiots out there you're just another brick in the wall. When people ignore the likes of you completely you will all disappear.
Andrew Keen "The Cult of the amateur. How the internet is killing our culture." read it, and don't support sites like youtube and myspace. Free Tom from the Internet!

you don't think i've heard the original?. the voice in this one, is something he chooses to do.. the original voice is the best on the record, but at a live performance, it's obvious he does this, or else it would sound boring.. yes, his voice has of course evolved to be more trashy. but listen to big black mariah.. it's not exactly the same, but close. and it's from the same album.
oops, i meant listen to "heart attack and vine" on the compilation "used songs" he sang like this both, before and after the release of the album "rain dogs"
I can't think of any other way of saying it
