I am paying attention and I LOVE THEM. They are still great and always will be. Thank you John Osborne for this song. I love you. Being in America and you in England is hard but we do it somehow. I NEED TO TOUCH YOU AGAIN SOON.
The thing which I loved about Split Enz was how uncool they were. They never took themselves seriously for a second and went out of their way to look as weird as possible.
OMG I feel old... I remember this video pre MTV and VH1 In 1978, Nesmith thought of creating a television show with only music videos, eventually, Warner-Amex would ask Nesmith to create music clips for Nickelodeon, 56 episodes of “Popclips” were filmed.
Tim Finn played my shitty acoustic guitar at a party at our flat in Old Mountain Rd , Mt.Kakapuku , solitarily in the corner, near the former Tokanui psych hospital. It was a party for Belinda , her friend, a flatmate..
I discovered split enz while watching a VH1 classic retrospective on the first days of MTV in 2006. VH1C played the first hundred videos or so that MTV ever played, and this was one of them. I have been a fan ever since
@twiightluva its only weird if your a bloke if your a sheila whats the big deal there a women out there for every bloke in the world even the most ugly.
I love how the fact these guys are from New Zealand is unknown to most people. Thank God they broke the mold of musicians from NZ never actually being able to get into the international market. If that was the mold back then. Proud to be a kiwi :) <3
i get them. they spoke to me a an early age. so damn important to getting the genre to USA and no f**king credit whatsoever. some of us know the truth
I'm black, and I was drawn to them, and I grew up in the ghetto. WXRT in Chicago exposed me to lots of great artists. The Clash, Peter Gabriel, Roxy Music, Echo and the Bunnymen, David Bowie, The English Beat, The Specials, and of course, Split Enz. Their music spoke to me, and changed how I looked at the rest of the Universe as a result.
It was 91x in San Diego. I had a group of friends that was into the scene, but I was the only one who really got what the Split Enz - It was like my private band that no one else really knew.
@chicagoam1 Your right!!!! I'm black and i grew up in the 80's. I was 15 years old in 1980 and listening the these songs with mostly white musicians changed my ways.
Don't get me wrong, I likes rap too. Most of my music was on MTV which gave me more respect to all white people.
@chicagoam1 That was a cool time with the music, which they referred to as "college scene" music. Was WXRT a college station? I was born in Chicago Heights, grew up in Park Forest, but in '72, we moved to Georgia, north of ATL....Talking about culture shock! But once the '80's came along, things were better!
I remember hopping a subway down to Tower Records to pick up the Waiata album (what's this CD stuff?) when I was working in Manhattan. It was one of my favorite songs in college, and what a great early MTV video! Go ahead, make me feel like a kid again!
Speaking of feeling like a kid, did you know that they played at the MCG on March 14? The Sound Relief concert in aid of the Victorian bushires. They were excellent!
My FIRST ever u tube Comment! Fitting it should be for THIS band; THIS song. Brings me back to the heady first days of MTV. Love this band and their sound. When Neil sings about "no man's land" it gives me the chills...knowing what his countrymen's soldiery endured during WWI.
Lighten up. The guy was simply describing his emotional reaction to something that was there, not reacting negatively to something he perceived to be lacking in something else entirely. I wish people would limit themselves to making positive comments about the things they like rather than going around trying to start pointless arguments.
Great minds think alike! Yeah, YouTube seems to have a lot of wonderful surprises. I've seen things on here that I never thought I'd catch again. Cheers bud.
What a treat to discover this here! This has been one of my favorite songs for years, and I just now (duh!) decided to look up Split Enz on YouTube. Will have to watch the other vids here now too. "Message to My Girl" is another absolute fave. Thanks SO much for posting these everyone!
at 1:43 i nearly explode every single time i hear this song. the crappy VHS quality of this video just adds to it's value. thanks so much for the upload! love it!
the enz were fans of the beatles, thats why there is that influence. i adore the enz, but not as much as crowded house. i actually liked the enz better when neil finn joined, he some what improved the band, i like his vocals better than tim's. no offence...
fraction too much friction? i love that song, i'm now beginning to appreciate tim's voice now, but neil's is still more, i dunno, "soothing, calm?" ? lol.
This was actually the 12th music video shown on MTV during its initial launch. And "One Step Ahead" was the 26th video shown. Doesn't surprise me being that they had the more creative videos compared to .38 Special and Billy Squire's concert footage shown on the channel at the time.
Wow, they were so good, far too unappreciated. I love the subtle nod to the Beatles there... also those bottle bottom glasses were great, and excellent use of lighting to create a menacing undercurrent.
Possibly. But history has been repeating itself as far as the Enz reappearing... here's to more. I went to the "final" Enz concert all those years ago.
Audio quality completely gets shredded toward the end of the video.
