I discovered split enz while watching a VH1 classic retrospective on the first days of MTV in 2006. VH1C played the first hundred videos or so that MTV ever played, and this was one of them. I have been a fan ever since

I'm black, and I was drawn to them, and I grew up in the ghetto. WXRT in Chicago exposed me to lots of great artists. The Clash, Peter Gabriel, Roxy Music, Echo and the Bunnymen, David Bowie, The English Beat, The Specials, and of course, Split Enz. Their music spoke to me, and changed how I looked at the rest of the Universe as a result.

I'm glad I "got it"!

@chicagoam1 Your right!!!! I'm black and i grew up in the 80's. I was 15 years old in 1980 and listening the these songs with mostly white musicians changed my ways.

Don't get me wrong, I likes rap too. Most of my music was on MTV which gave me more respect to all white people.

I was born in Chicago Heights, grew up in Park Forest, but in '72, we moved to Georgia, north of ATL....Talking about culture shock! But once the '80's came along, things were better!

This was actually the 12th music video shown on MTV during its initial launch. And "One Step Ahead" was the 26th video shown. Doesn't surprise me being that they had the more creative videos compared to .38 Special and Billy Squire's concert footage shown on the channel at the time.
