  • Audio quality completely gets shredded toward the end of the video.

  • I am paying attention and I LOVE THEM. They are still great and always will be. Thank you John Osborne for this song. I love you. Being in America and you in England is hard but we do it somehow. I NEED TO TOUCH YOU AGAIN SOON.

  • to chicagoam1....what a great time, huh! that was special music and i totally agree with you. rock on!

  • I can tell you from experience that history always repeats.

  • one of two bands from overseas in the 80's that bring me so much joy.....split enz forever!!!!

  • The thing which I loved about Split Enz was how uncool they were. They never took themselves seriously for a second and went out of their way to look as weird as possible.

  • OMG I feel old... I remember this video pre MTV and VH1 In 1978, Nesmith thought of creating a television show with only music videos, eventually, Warner-Amex would ask Nesmith to create music clips for Nickelodeon, 56 episodes of “Popclips” were filmed.

  • This video (the start at least) always reminds of 'Dare to be stupid' video by Weird Al. Strange.

  • Tim Finn played my shitty acoustic guitar at a party at our flat in Old Mountain Rd , Mt.Kakapuku , solitarily in the corner, near the former Tokanui psych hospital. It was a party for Belinda , her friend, a flatmate..

  • I discovered split enz while watching a VH1 classic retrospective on the first days of MTV in 2006. VH1C played the first hundred videos or so that MTV ever played, and this was one of them. I have been a fan ever since

  • i was only 11 or 12 when they were around but even then i could tell they were a cut above.

plus i'm aussie and even in 82 or 83 we were claiming them.

    go thu splut inz.

all our thoughts today though are with the christchurch quake victims and survivors.

  • Hmmm... The intro seems odley similar to "I gotta feeling" By Black eyed peas

  • @ThatAdelaideGuy Not to mention "Australia" by the Manic Street Preachers.

  • @ThatAdelaideGuy yeah except the Black Eyed Peas weren't around like 30 years ago when this was released...

  • Comment removed

  • @ThatAdelaideGuy

maybe history does repeat after all!

  • vocal harmonies to die for

  • 5 dislikes????

  • OLD SCHOOL ROCKS!!!

  • These guys were awesome!!!!

  • loved this song---and both them brothers can sing they azs off

  • U guys mite think im weird, but i kinda think that he is cute. lol

  • @twiightluva its only weird if your a bloke if your a sheila whats the big deal there a women out there for every bloke in the world even the most ugly.

  • Kiwi Rockers fuck yeah!!!!!!

  • who's black?...im white and get it..is that cool? (lol)..

  • I love how the fact these guys are from New Zealand is unknown to most people. Thank God they broke the mold of musicians from NZ never actually being able to get into the international market. If that was the mold back then. Proud to be a kiwi :) <3

  • Back when MTV actually had something to offer the world. The Top 40 radio stations in the US definitely weren't playing this stuff.

  • Does any know if they ever did a video for " Hard act to fellow "? I would appreciate it if any one would post it please Thanks.

  • CLASSIC CLASSIC CLASSIC SONG.

  • He kinda reminds me of Freddie and the dreamers

  • Timeless classic my 5yr old loves this song!!!

  • But anyway, thats history.

  • My favorite band growing up. Too bad more people didn't pay attention. They were great!

  • top song!

  • this is a great song.

  • The Wiggles do a pretty good cover of "Six Months in a Leaky Boat". I heard thier version first. I didn't even know Split Enz wrote it.

  • Yes Neil Finn performed it with them, very classy!

  • split enz forever!!!!!

  • I love this song!!!!

  • Probably my fav split enz song - message to my girl second.

  • The thing about Split Enz...... either you get it(them), or you don't. There is no middle ground.

    Personally, I love their work!!

  • i get them. they spoke to me a an early age. so damn important to getting the genre to USA and no f**king credit whatsoever. some of us know the truth

  • so true ....!!!!!

  • You're right.

I'm black, and I was drawn to them, and I grew up in the ghetto. WXRT in Chicago exposed me to lots of great artists. The Clash, Peter Gabriel, Roxy Music, Echo and the Bunnymen, David Bowie, The English Beat, The Specials, and of course, Split Enz. Their music spoke to me, and changed how I looked at the rest of the Universe as a result.

    I'm glad I "got it"!

  • It was 91x in San Diego. I had a group of friends that was into the scene, but I was the only one who really got what the Split Enz - It was like my private band that no one else really knew.

  • WXRT is such a great station!! Play all sorts of music no one else would dare to play!

  • n z loves you bro...

  • dude, thanx for your comment.

    white brother in nc.

  • @chicagoam1 Your right!!!! I'm black and i grew up in the 80's. I was 15 years old in 1980 and listening the these songs with mostly white musicians changed my ways.

Don't get me wrong, I likes rap too. Most of my music was on MTV which gave me more respect to all white people.

  • @chicagoam1 That was a cool time with the music, which they referred to as "college scene" music. Was WXRT a college station? I was born in Chicago Heights, grew up in Park Forest, but in '72, we moved to Georgia, north of ATL....Talking about culture shock! But once the '80's came along, things were better!

  • @chicagoam1 I know what you mean. I feel the same way.

  • great vid from early mtv enz always...

  • Sounds so Rubber Soul it's scary!

  • Great comment, Steve. Never thought of that!

  • I always thought this song sounded like the Hollies, but now that you mention it the Hollies owe heaps to the Beatles mid 60's (like many)

  • Another great aussie band of the 70's and 80's.

  • New Zealand

  • Split Enz were a New Zealand Band!!! This was a song prior to Crowded House even existing....

  • LOL ... Yeah i know they are/were.

I'm just winding up our close cousins!!! There is plenty of friendly rivalry between OZ and NZ.

  • That was nasty!

  • Fair enough!

  • Ummm, New Zealand band dude...

  • oz didn't make them, their talent made them. oz just happened to be the ones that sold them. Jump off a cliff.

  • That's not very nice from across the ditch.

Crowded House had their farewell in Sydney.

They knew who to thank for their start.

  • why don't we forget what was said above

  • I remember hopping a subway down to Tower Records to pick up the Waiata album (what's this CD stuff?) when I was working in Manhattan. It was one of my favorite songs in college, and what a great early MTV video! Go ahead, make me feel like a kid again!

  • Speaking of feeling like a kid, did you know that they played at the MCG on March 14? The Sound Relief concert in aid of the Victorian bushires. They were excellent!

  • very french revolution around 1;45... artistic and very finn, im sure.. unique in the music world....

  • All their songs give me chills, anmazing band,

  • ahhh....just had to come back and play it again!lovin the enz!!!

  • They're at their peak.....

  • great song from the 80s

  • LOVE this song! I can't stop playing it!

  • Another classic! My next favourite after "Message to my Girl". Brilliant!

  • saw the world premiere on mtv still love it long live the enz

  • It would have been a buzz to see the first airing of this video. I love Split Enz.

  • i loved this song as a child and only knew one verse of it. 'History never repeats!'

  • love this song - love split enz

  • Tape side two. Played it untill I bought more tape.

Will buy a CD, that I will probably play so much it gets scratched, then I will buy another CD.

  • lolz. i dont think my local cd store sells split enz.

  • @angile7 Then I recommend you move. : )

  • great momentum and harmonies plus effective melody - great band

  • real mtv real videos i loved the early 80s split enz is that great timepiece.

  • My FIRST ever u tube Comment! Fitting it should be for THIS band; THIS song. Brings me back to the heady first days of MTV. Love this band and their sound. When Neil sings about "no man's land" it gives me the chills...knowing what his countrymen's soldiery endured during WWI.

  • So Paul McCartney and Peter Garrett never knew about the trenches if the Beatles and Midnight Oil never mentioned 'tank' or 'trenchfoot'?

  • Lighten up. The guy was simply describing his emotional reaction to something that was there, not reacting negatively to something he perceived to be lacking in something else entirely. I wish people would limit themselves to making positive comments about the things they like rather than going around trying to start pointless arguments.

  • Aint that the truth!

  • awsome !

  • Great minds think alike! Yeah, YouTube seems to have a lot of wonderful surprises. I've seen things on here that I never thought I'd catch again. Cheers bud.

  • What a treat to discover this here! This has been one of my favorite songs for years, and I just now (duh!) decided to look up Split Enz on YouTube. Will have to watch the other vids here now too. "Message to My Girl" is another absolute fave. Thanks SO much for posting these everyone!

  • well, you beat my thinking by two weeks!! Hah!

yep - you tube is ace if this is what you can find!!

    :)

  • Great band. Why so little success in the U.S.?

  • Neil's facial expressions are priceless, so dramatic.

  • How about Tim Finn in this video and "I Got You"?

  • Look at the guy hoola hooping, he's getting down. I could not do that!!!

  • wish they'd come to Canada!

  • they disbanded ages ago.

  • They've reunited and touring in NZ

  • at 1:43 i nearly explode every single time i hear this song. the crappy VHS quality of this video just adds to it's value. thanks so much for the upload! love it!

  • Me and my friends got into split enz a few months ago...im going to their concert in easter KIWIS ROCK

  • slit enz and crowded house rock!

  • wtf lol i got a thumbs down?

  • another one?

  • i dunno dude... maybe it was the missing "p" but i gave you a thumbs up. ;)

  • Neil Finn is my secret boyfriend!!!

  • same

but only if he was young again lol

  • history never repeats!

    i tell myself before i go-to-sleep!

don't say the words you might regret

i lost before, you know i can't forget!

    kiwi4eva! bro

  • Catchy song!

  • I saw Crowded House back in November 2008 and Neil played "i got you" and "message to my girl"

  • 2007 you mean?

  • Yeah sorry 2007...I'm good sadly im not that good enough to go into the future! They played in Belfast - was excellent!

  • a great KIWI band, not australian

  • Neill Finn BLOWS PHIL JUDD AWAY.

  • AND CHRIS JUDD!

  • split enz are a fantastic kiwi band but i think that they sufferd a lot with the songwriting after Phil Judd left them

  • Phil Judd is that you? your not fooling anyone!

  • I saw crowded house in Manchester last night, alas no Enz tunes.

  • wow. most of guided by voices' catalog sounds just like this.

  • liam finn (neils son) has just released a single, and sounds good too, if he is anything like his father he will go far

  • What a great band! I did get to see Crowded House. It would be great to see SE come to the states sometime.

  • love split eng

    \

  • or does IT? see trvor at bix

  • the enz were fans of the beatles, thats why there is that influence. i adore the enz, but not as much as crowded house. i actually liked the enz better when neil finn joined, he some what improved the band, i like his vocals better than tim's. no offence...

  • yeah, friction to much fraction (or whatever...i never remember) is almost unbearable to me haha

  • fraction too much friction? i love that song, i'm now beginning to appreciate tim's voice now, but neil's is still more, i dunno, "soothing, calm?" ? lol.

  • Classic by the New Zealanders.

  • Great song and GREAT video from one of my very favorite bands !!

  • God a Great song!!

  • i love this song AND this vid...i saw duran duran OPEN for the Split Enz at the Ontario Theatre in DC in 82

AWEsome f-ing show! Crowded house was awesome, too..but let's not forget where they started and the Enz was amazing!

  • i saw inxs open for duran duran at meadobank stadium scotland

  • Neil and Tin Finn were heavily influenced by the Beatles - along with everybody else! I love Split Enz - my favourite band of all time.

  • The Finn brothers were and still are great talents.

  • I think this is one of their best songs. It sounds great !

  • This was actually the 12th music video shown on MTV during its initial launch. And "One Step Ahead" was the 26th video shown. Doesn't surprise me being that they had the more creative videos compared to .38 Special and Billy Squire's concert footage shown on the channel at the time.

  • Odd that this song wasn't actually released as a single in the USA.

  • Wow, they were so good, far too unappreciated. I love the subtle nod to the Beatles there... also those bottle bottom glasses were great, and excellent use of lighting to create a menacing undercurrent.

  • Yes. Great little nod to the Beatles. Actually a very Beatles inspired sound. Wouldn't be surprised if one or all of them were or are fans.

  • Is it me or is the song talking about 'Split Enz' of way back when?

  • what do u mean?

  • Possibly. But history has been repeating itself as far as the Enz reappearing... here's to more. I went to the "final" Enz concert all those years ago.

  • A nice song by SPLIT ENZ.

    The video is interesting.

    Thank you boys!

  • Thanks for putting these long-lost vids up!

    vch

  • Long live the Finn Bros. Great live performers.

  • Neil Finn is God

  • I believe in God !

  • Thank you JimEAP for the Vid's. I appreciate it!

  • My favorate song!
