Only their radio releases are 'commercial'. Their albums are much harder... to the point where I almost didn't want to buy their albums because I don't care for 'metal'. It grew on me because I really do enjoy Nickelback and their music.

They aren't authentic rock music, they don't bring anything new to the genre whatsoever. Everything about them is recycled rock and their lyrics are so unimaginative a 13 year old could have written them. You have to understand music and have a trained ear to get what I'm saying.

To address your point of Nickelback being unoriginal, there hasn't been too much originallity in "rock" music since the early eighties, rock isn't about a trained ear it's about the feeling you get from hearing it.

They are so popular because authentic rock n roll bands just do not exist anymore. Nickelback is what everyone thinks is rock n roll today because that's all there is. They really are a mediocre band to say the least, you just have to understand music to know that (which most people don't). I guarantee you if a new Guns n Roses or something came out today, Nicelback would disappear in a heartbeat. I can guarantee you that.
