Comparing Syd Barret to David Gilmour is like.....nevermind there isn't a comparison. We wouldn't even be talking about Floyd today if it wasn't for Gilmour. He helped write and record some of the greatest albums of all time. Quit trying to be fucking fanboys and act as if Syd Barrett was some kind of genius. The songs suck and are as boring as watching paint fucking dry. They shouldn't even be called Pink Floyd imo.
@gl797 I can only imagine that you are a young bloke. Pink Floyd were an amazing & extremely influential band with Syd Barrett. I can tell you now that it was nothing like watching paint dry. I love both Pink Floyds the older psychedelic version & the current commercial/accessible version. Both versions have been relevant through Rock's history.
@greenypete Well if you consider 47 young..then yes. "Commercial/accessible"?..I don't think there's many 13 year old girls who had "Animals", nor even DSOTM in their collection. I think a better description is "Mediocre (at best) & Great".
@gl797 I'm 60 so I guess I appreciate the relevance of the reeely old stuff & how outstanding it was back then. I didn't mean accessible in a disrepectful sense, DSOTM is one of the greatest efforts in musical history from any age & isn't incredible that after all of these years it still seems so fresh & beautiful.
@OhNonottheNWO I think Syd's significance in what became floyd is that he reallly inspired alot of material. The angst, grief, and insanity from dark side of the moon and wish you were here seem to be relavant to Syd, even in songs that are not outright about him. I personally like Syd's music, but I agree it is different from what pink floyd became. I would say an exception would be "interstellar overdrive." that song seems more like something from the gilmour floyd.
I love Floyd all their stuff and I have to say Barrett was a key factor to Floyd. He inspired waters to right wish you were here, shine on you crazy diamond and a few other classic Floyd tracks. Also, think about the song Interstellar Overdrive off their first album when Syd was the one leading there direction. Don’t you think interstellar overdrive lead floyd in the direction of making songs such as echoes, careful with that axe Eugene, and one of these days and many others.
Also Syds so called none sense hippy lyrics songs are great for example Astronomy Domine, apples and oranges, Lucifer Sam. See Emily play a song written by Syd Barrett, is included in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll list. It takes genius to even be considered to be on that list let alone make it on
And for those who say he had no guitar talent let’s see you create a song like interstellar overdrive on guitar. Yes I agree Gilmore is the better guitar player but I still think Syds experimental work deserves respect. So to all you making Syd sound like he’s no big deal your wrong.
-life is a short warm moment death is a long cold rest- RIP Syd Barret
Im wondering how the top comments are not anything to do with the fact that whoever made this video is retarded but obviously has good taste in music otherwise wouldn't know who these guys are....
Syd and David got on really well, infact it was David and Richard that co-produced his 2 solo albums, I don;t think Syd held that much against him. He was basically his own worst enemy, and Syd knew it too.
@R33Racer ur wrong....Syd did indeed have a prob w/david. David himself said that b4 Syd got real bad and stopped going out all together that Syd would come to their shows and stand front row rt in front of David and just stare at him the whole show. David said it really creeped him out and that he did feel a tension from him. So yes they worked together but Syd did not like David much at all. This is straight from the horses mouth.
@R33Racer its from an interview of david. i'll look when i get home to see which video it was on. i'm outta town rt now...in a band. but i will def let u know cause its true. just thought u would wanna know the truth.
@R33Racer well fuck you then u lil punk bitch! find it ur damn self! next time get ur facts straight b4 coming on here and acting like u know wat the fuck ur tlkn about. i was just trying to keep u from looking like a fool....but...now u do and theres no help for ya! ur credibility is shot.
@trxxxtr Difference is I atleast know the facts and going by what's been said by autobiographys plus what I genuinely know is true. You say there's this 'interview' which probably doesn't exist. Plus by that response of poor insults and woeful grammar who's really the fool here? Lol bloody kids on the internet for you...
It took Bob Close's leaving to transform them from a garage band to the pink floyd sound, and it took the sacking of Syd for them to achieve real success as Pink Floyd (no more "the" or "sound"). If Syd were to not have been ousted from the band, we'd never have heard the likes of Meddle, DSotM, WYWH, The Wall, and heck, even the final cut (even though it's often considered a Waters solo work, a great underrated but whiny album). Pink Floyd would have been but a flash in the pan had Syd stayed.
@all of you, toast and marmalade is really tasty, honestly, it's delicious. If you ever get sick of cereal one morning, have some toast with marmalade, it'll change the way you think about breakfast forever. You can eat it any time of day, though.

@baronmaul Well it wasn't a question of laziness. It was more about how much time I wanted to invest on somebody who just copies and pastes YouTube comments rather than thinking of something original to say. I don't have time for 'cool'. Cool is for sheep.

@Dybal88 Syd was with Floyd for one album and one song on the next, Gilmour (although a stubborn prick) has been the the sound of floyd for the past 40 years - get over it!

so fucking stupid and lame. Gilmour was just speaking the truth. Some Barret fans dont seem to like the truth...esp. from those who have 1st hand knowledge of it.
