I understand the directors decision to cut and edit songs and scenes due to time constraints and making the musical suitable for adaption but it seems a waste. I am sure that if they made an extra effort they could have got the scenes to fit/work.

I really wish that they had kept all of Goodbye Love as the argument between Roger and Mark is an excellent scene and Rosario did an amazing performance. Also Halloween would have made a great addition as it would give us more of an insight into Mark and it was shot really well.

Idk if this is exactly the answer you were looking for, but it's the same for pretty much all the main characters in the movie... they're all just trying to be "artists"... Roger = musician.  Mimi = dancer (She claims it's just a living, but it's the only thing I could think of for her)...(straight couple) Maureen = actress, Joanne is fine with her lawyer-ing...(Lesbian couple). Angel = model. collins = teacher/tech guy at colleges..(gay couple)...then there's just Mark... aspiring filmmaker.

None of them reaslly have a point in the movie... or you could say that they all have a point in the movie. This is a really hard movie to explain... Mark's point would just be to be there for his friends... there's no one that he's a couple with, and he feels left alone a lot of the time (and i'm sure a lot of people can relate to that), but he still gets through?... if you listen to the director's commentary on the DVD, the tell you why they chose not to add these scenes, specifically 'halloween' and 'goodbye love', which is one of my favorite songs from the musical, but their justification makes sense.

Goodbye Love is the defining moment of the musical where everything comes crashing down. Every pair is split (Mark/Roger, Roger/Mimi, Tom/Angel, Maureen/Joanne) and it's the official point where Roger leaves and Mimi says goodbye to Roger and recovery from her addiction... It shouldn't have been cut because it's pivotal.

I really love RENT and really wish that they would've put these scenes in the film it would have been so much better. I'm an actor myself did this play once with a local theatre group and it was so great (except that the the director cut out WAYYY TOO MUCH to make it appropriate for teenagers 16 and under , i know stupid, but whatever...)
