@harisel For magazines, the nookColor is better with a color display. But if you are traveling overseas, make sure you load your content before you leave the country. B&N doesn't let you buy/download books outside of the US with an US account. Amazon lets you do it in certain countries. Check their web site for the list.

about the pdf reading...does it allow to bookmark a page? I have a few pdf text books for school and rather jump to a page ie 342 where a chapter begins or be able to jump to that bookmark. You said links were disabled in the review, was this changed at all in the firmware updates? Thanks
@9322002898 The Nook isn't cross platform. Kindle can only read books from Amazon. Nook can read most books other than ones from Amazon, I think. I know for a fact it can't read books from Amazon, but sure about other places. I think as long as they are in PDF format, you'll be ok.
The idea of a colour reader appeals to me, but it's not quite there yet. On other vids I've seen of this it's had far more flicker. I'm sticking to eink for now. Great review.
The flickering of the screens seen in other videos is a result of the camera being used, not the nook itself. The nook actually has pretty good screen quality. If you still have doubts, you can go in to most any BN store and they will have display versions of the Nook that you can play with.
It would be easy enough to bring the audio from the devices you are demonstrating directly into your feel. Get a 1/8" (3.5mm) Male to Male Cable and connect directly from the headphone jack to the PC line-in or Mic input. Adjust the gain down to 0db and volume at about 60-80 for best results on the sound card levels if you use the Mic input).
@zelda10911ssbm Yes, I use mine for that all the time and love it. The catch is, I have to side load it myself... big deal really since I already did that on my computer. So i just loaded the files I already had onto the nookcolor in pdf form.
Just bought this device specifically to read pdf and pretty disappointed. No way to add bookmarks to pdfs. Once you close pdf or exit screen, it reopens from beginning again - very annoying if you're reading a large pdf. No dictionary or notation functionality either. Forget about converting pdf to epub - most graphics, pictures and tables won't convert properly. Was considering returning it but will probably wait and hope these issues are resolved in future upgrades.
Thanks for such a great review, part I & II. I have visited a few tech sites and read a lot on the Nook Color but definitely got a better 'feel' for the device with your videos. I'm still on the fence for the device and waiting to see how B&N treats updates. If it had Netflix access, it would be an instant buy though.
Glad you mentioned the video playback. I read some people have issues so mentioning the h.264 standard and limited resolutions available is great info to have.
@vcs332 I have a DSi, and I guess it depends on what do you want the most. If you love videogames and play them on a regular basis, then it's a good choice. But if you plan on reading more, and maybe some web-browsing, choose the Nook Color. I got bored of the DSi after a few weeks.
@vcs332 Do you mean Nook Color? If so, Yes. It's running Android 2.1 which has no problem to play YouTube videos. Soon they will upgrade to Android 2.2 and 2.3 which has full Flash support. I don't know anything about the older Nook, sry.
@vcs332 Nook Color and subscribe to National Geographic. You won't regret it. My little brother has a DSi. It's nice the first weeks, after that you never play again.
I just ordered this based on your review. I had intended to root it, but since you said that it would be awkward without the four dedicated android buttons, I have some reservations. Should be much better than the Kindle though. Navigating without touchscreen is a Sisyphean task. I wish you went into a little more detail about what else the Nook isn't able to do. Specifically, about some popular features, if any? Obviously, the Kindle App would be unavailable, which is why I want to root.
she sounds like Ellen DiGeneris. on the next video could you recite some lines from the hit "Finding Nemo" ? :) Just kidding, GREAT VIDEO very informative. I have it on good authority I will be receiving a NOOK COLOR for Christmas!!!! YAAAY!
@MobileTechReview Apparently this is possible, but you have to strip the DRM and convert the format using something like Calibre (to do the latter part).
@Mrsdean1087 Yes, you can, but you have to root the Nook first. After it's rooted you can use the Android Market, get the Kindle app, and read them that way.
When you connect the device to your computer, you will see an additional drive called "media" in windows explorer. You will find the appropriate folders to put your pictures and music in the "My Files" folder.
Do you know how I can close a book instead of leaving it open. At the top it keeps the title of the book I'm reading. How do you put pictures & music on the nook color?

@9322002898 The Nook isn't cross platform. Kindle can only read books from Amazon. Nook can read most books other than ones from Amazon, I think. I know for a fact it can't read books from Amazon, but sure about other places. I think as long as they are in PDF format, you'll be ok.
matrix86 1 year ago
@matrix86 Actually, if you root it, you can install the Kindle app from the Android market, and can read books from your amazon account :)

The idea of a colour reader appeals to me, but it's not quite there yet. On other vids I've seen of this it's had far more flicker. I'm sticking to eink for now. Great review.
muskndusk 1 year ago
@muskndusk

Wow I am sold. This was a very good review and the price is very reasonable for the all that it does.

@zelda10911ssbm She did say that its a good device to read Manga, and other comics.
Kavatha1 1 year ago

So can this use iTunes music? Am answer would be very helpful cause that's what's holding me back from getting this cool device.

Can you listen to audio books on the nook color?

The price is unbeatable. $245? In your face, Apple and Amazon.
TrickyEmu 1 year ago

Can you buy amazon books and use it on the nook? There are just cheaper books on amazon it seems

@Mrsdean1087 No. Only Amazon products do Kindle books.

@MobileTechReview
DOwnload to PC, remove DRM, transfer to Nook
bambi005 1 year ago
@MobileTechReview Apparently this is possible, but you have to strip the DRM and convert the format using something like Calibre (to do the latter part).
muskndusk 1 year ago
@Mrsdean1087 - you can easily convert them so they can work. I've converted hundreds of them.
TheBgcheez 1 year ago
@Mrsdean1087 Yes, you can, but you have to root the Nook first. After it's rooted you can use the Android Market, get the Kindle app, and read them that way.

excellent review.

If it gets rooted, I see no reason why someone couldn't probably squeeze the necessary buttons into the notification bar or something.
But I just want one because it looks pretty darn cool.

When you connect the device to your computer, you will see an additional drive called "media" in windows explorer. You will find the appropriate folders to put your pictures and music in the "My Files" folder.
