Ray Croc, Walt Disney and Hugh Hefner were ordinary men of the 20th Century who changed the world in a purely American way. If you have contempt for them then you have contempt for humanity who made them rich by buying what they sold.
I've heard a few people say they don't like Mark Knopfler because he has a "boring guitar style". I just can't see how these people don't get what Mark is about, every one of his songs are incredibly well composed, with fantastic, interesting, textured guitar most of the time.
Mark is a true guitar hero that occasionally gets lumped into 80s rock by ignorant people who think Dire Straits are shitty 80s rock without checking out for themselves..
@SimZepp I agree. Guitar playing is not about who can play fastest. If that was the case, Joe Satriani would be a guitar god, not Eric Clapton. When I have to justify why Dire Straits is one of my favorite bands to a skeptic, I simply put the first Dire staits disc on a high fidelity stereo system. (not an I pod). So many people have never heard that album all the way through.
@SimZepp I see people comment so often about how crap vocals he is It drives me nuts! Mark uses his voice as it is and makes it masterful. He contrasts his rough voice so damn perfectly with that godlike guitar purity, sometimes he even finishes sentences with it. It blows my mind. His voice is his songs and his songs are his voice. That's why cover bands can never get it right.
i heard a second version of this song when he loops the these guys bought a heap of my stuff part. i thought it def had a really good tune but i was let down by the lack of lyrical power..good thing i found this version with the full lyrics.
@TelfLad I don't know what rent boys are, but this song is about McDonald's. Ray Kroc was the founder of the chain, and he 'stole' the concept from two brothers who owned the first McD restaurant...
@schub1111 Why do you think I used the quotation marks? In the beginning, he had the rights and approval of Dick and Mac McD., but he kind of fucked them over. That's why many people feel like he stole it
love mark knopfler but what a ropey video!" Why are they sitting in someone's spare bedroom recording? what's with the wandering up and down the beach?
@CDOCT81 he was great. When I saw him he was sitting because he pinched something in his back. And yes he did play a good amount of dire straits stuff. That was my first time seeing him play live but I'm hoping i'll see him again.
@chaifjuice the guitar knopfler is playing is either a 50's or 60's origional "Danelectro Hornet series" which is obviously discontinued or a reissue of the Hornet called a "Danelectro Dead on '67" Danelectros are a novelty brand that had great shapes and sounded unique because of the "lipstick pickups" . They were called this because the origional danelectros had pickup covers made with lipstick tubes. Keep jammin' DW
@YooperG Mark keeps his constant high performances with the aid of Guy, Richard and Glenn, check back over the years and see how long they been around !!
In case you're not a fan of the lyrics, allow me to illuminate them. The song is about Ray Kroc, the founder of McDonald's. He got started in San Ber'dino, California. That help, lolusernames?
i had to listen to this song in school cuz were learning about songs and we listened to this song and i dunno if i likee it or not but imma listen to it likee 100 times and see if i do..lol..
You guys no this is about McDonalds! Ray Kroc is the one who created McDonalds, but he stole the idea from other guysss thats what this songs aboutttttttt
This page is about Knopfler...Fantastic song, based on Kroc's own book......Now about your admiration of KrocKroc.....
Fuck Ray Kroc...He's just part of the downfall of our civilization, like Sam Walton. Homogenization and conformity and destroying other Americans in the guise of "providing a service" is not admirable in any way. He's no Edison.....A greedy, cunning asshole pure and simple.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure an MK custom Fender Telecaster, the Danelectro models tend to have the tuners lower, and look a tad more futuristic. Plus look at the width of the neck, though that can be also switched if you got the cash.
KellyA... Me too. I have been a Mark fan since the very first time I heard Sultans back in 1978. And since Golden Heart came out, he has moved to #1 on my list of favorites, surpassing my ex-number 1, Bob Dylan, who is spending most of his time on the road these days abusing his audiences with crappy piano and completely mumbled and inaudible vocals. Mark loves what he's doing, and he does it beautifully time after time after time!
I used to have all my bedroom walls plastered with MK/ DS
I lost interest after Brothers in arms because there was such a huge gap between albums. I thought it was really unfair to leave the fans in wilderness for so long. But Im getting back into my MK roots again. :)
Awesome song. Been following Knopfler since I first heard "Sultans of Swing" in '78 while coming back from football practice, which blew me away, this does, too.

galavoti1 - "ring-a-ding-ding" is a phrase associated with Frank Sinatra. Like "wham bam ... ", MK's lyrics contain many cliches, just to set tone & context of another time; mcdonalds started when Sinatra was popular. only my opinion ... boom like that
thats incredible how smoth all of these instruments work with his voice

hey if you know what im talking about it makes perfect sence. 2% of the population owns 98% of all the money in america, Thats billions and the lack of money in the everyday persons is what is creating suck a huge gap in classes and education and lyfestyle. Poverty is a crime which just creates more crime. Thank you capitalism.

....and YOU referring to people as "white trash" is doing so much to bridge the gap between classes...once again, youre all over the place...shut the fuck up till you get your own thoughts organized and stop embarassing yourself...dumbass.

Hi folks! Awesome song!Any native english speaker can tell me what is a "ding-ding"?
Galavoti1 2 years ago
It's "ring-a-ding-ding" like the old doorbell sound. The host unwittingly invites the thief.

galavoti1 - "ring-a-ding-ding" is a phrase associated with Frank Sinatra. Like "wham bam ... ", MK's lyrics contain many cliches, just to set tone & context of another time; mcdonalds started when Sinatra was popular. only my opinion ... boom like that

Is it just me, or are they super low on energy. Kinda a boring video... Looks like he's lip syncing with about half the energy.

Its about the guy who started mcdonalds.
tossydawn 2 years ago
He didn't actually start McDonalds but he took it over and turned it into an empire--and a rather vicious one at that, like all empires.
