For me, I think that people react negatively because Hicks was so insulting.

Whereas, when I watch Carlin, I get this impression that he is ridiculing people out of love, almost in a reassuring way, with Hicks, I feel that he's ridiculing people because he thinks that they are stupid.

@TheDerekdub Carlin and Hicks had different attitudes and acts. Hicks attitudes were different from Carlin. Carlin was far simpler and nastier than Hicks who was just brutal and in your face but also quite imaginative. Carlin's act changed in the 70's far before Hicks got known overseas.

That was the big move for Carlin. Also, his message was pessimistic whereas Hicks was optimistic.

He highlighted the many flaws of humanity in the vain hope that we would try to improve. He disconnected from the solipsism of humanity, he divorced himself emotionally, and that gave him the darker edge, it made him funnier.
