and he is a nice guy too. I remember meeting him with his lovely wife and daughter the morning after his win and he was a pleasure to talk to and so humble. I really love when a super star athlete is so down to earth. It makes it that much more fun to be a fan. I admire him so much. He is so inspiring. My husband did Hawaii 4 times and he loves Crowie too!
i do ironman 70.3s and hopefully ill do full ones soon,i always wear a vented helmet as the time you save is minimal with a aero helmet as to get any benifit at all from a aero helmet you have to keep your head totally still, plus they make you sweat like a buggar
He does use an aero. IM Muskoka 70.3 he was wearing a Giro Advantage TT most likely because it was cooler up here than most of his other races. Ventilation and keeping cool may be more important to him in the longer distances too since it's so hot in Kona.
ventilation and cooler with regular helmet. Have you seen Crowie run? No need for the fastest bike split. If asked I'll bet he'd say he doesn't want the fastest bike split on the day. He wants someone else to blow up so he can run them down.
You know what is also impressive? Avg speed on the 111.6 mile bike leg, I calculated roughly around 24.2 mph. That's some damn good avg speed without the benefits of the draft like riding in a peloton in a grand tour. Hell, I think the Tour de France guys are averaging 26 or 27 mph with the peloton. But of course, I'm sure having a TT/Tri bike fitted with aerobars and aerowheels makes a huge difference.
yes it amazing what teamwork drafting can do. I wonder how fast these guys could do a ironman bike split in if they were allowed to draft like the tour guys.
the aero helmets not only DONT provide air ventilation but they can be a burden to the riders due to the weight of the helmet, so it becomes tough on the rider. but for the ones that are worried about making the bike cutoff, they use every lil peice of aero advantage as they can to to make the cut off. which is y everyone uses Aero Helmet.
Why don't some of the riders use aerohelmets? On a 40k TT it can shave over a minute of time. Is it just too long of a distance for some riders to be comfortable with that type of helmet?
He just won Ironman 2011 title :)

I wonder why he doesn't use an aero helmet. Every little bit counts on that kind of distance.

He looks like a guy on the TV show Baywatch, so when he was younger that's what people called him.

So if they don't worry about the cutoff and pedal hard then they'll be okay
