Playing Bach and the oter old pieces the right way isn't sterile... You have to make the interesting sound especialy with your bow. Then it sounds very elegant and easy, much better the the heavy romantic style.
I don't agree with generally "sterile" playing of period players but recordings ask for perfection, unfortunately, so that it's indeed harder to hear differences between individual period instrument players. The best sound is produced by those who relax and don't care about perfect intonation, like Ricci. Style doesn't live from perfection. Glazunov: the best players are the amateurs, if they play well.
