What amazes me is how Hank plays these opening notes with almost no attack, sounding more like an autobow than a plectrum-plucked string. I don't know if he uses an effects pedal to get that sound, but however he does it, it's beautiful.

@dfarmbrough Hank uses a volume pedal. Unlike a wah pedal, this only affects the volume. It is quit tricky to play, you have to play a bit in advance because of the slow attack...

I,v never heard a bad arrangement from the Shads in the c.50 years of their presence! I, like most of their fans, am an 'escapee from the sixties' guitarist also. The Shads (among others) were largely responsible for me taking up the instrument as a kid. I was never a 'great', but I made quite a good living out of it over the years. Thanx Shads! Sincerely!

Yes i agree with you it seems to be more about the clean cut image rather than his undoubted talent. Don't get me wrong Hendrix, Clapton & Slash to name a few are outstanding guitarists in their own right but i feel Hank could compare with any of them.

@balleo That impressed me most. His use of the volume pedal is phenomenal. I hate comparing guitarist from different genres because it's not a fair comparison. What Hank Marvin does he is the best at. Plus he influenced and encourage many new guitarists. Randy Bachman and Neil Young both wanted to be like Hank Marvin. So that says a lot about the man.
