Great Song! I heard this at the end of "Law Abiding Citizen" and told my wife I use to listen to Grand Funk when I was a teenager and this song sounded familiar. Although, I don't remember Don Brewer and Mel Schacher being this dark...Ha, Ha...That's a joke son! ;-)
This song bridged the gap between Hard Rock & Metal. Considering the music that was going around in 1970, this song stands up to metal coming out today. The proof is the song being covered by Monster Magnet, Gov't Mule, & George Lynch of Dokken fame.
monster magnet does a really good cover of this tune on "spine of god". very similiar to original, as opposed to gov't mule's version, done quite a bit different, but still very good.i plan on covering this song in my band as well. all in all, cool tune w/ simple yet catchy riff.
not mad at anyone on here but the fans 'created' Heavy Metal, if you want to say anyone 'created' Heavy Metal take a look at Blue Cheer and of course, as everyone knows, the mighty post-Earth, Black Sabbath
There was an interim period called Hard Rock, which pre-dated Metal & led into it. That included GFR, Zepplin, Cream, Hendrix, The Who, Vanilla Fudge, & a whole list of groups not quite metal but led the way. Helter Skelter would have been in the Hard Rock category.
I think the album closer to home is a masterpiece, one of my absolutely favourite and one of the best of the '70...but this is not the first heavy metal song...
We want GFR in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, do you hear me so called Powers to be????? It is ridiculous for this, the first heavy metal band to be kept out of the R&R Hall of Fame!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
no KISS in the rock and roll hall of fame... no Judas Priest, but Madonna is in there - the rock and roll hall of fame is a fuckin joke...... no need to put em in there
De su tercer album y una de sus mejores canciones, lástima que cambiaron su onda despues del 73; pero en vivo se han sostenido con las joyas de los primeros años. Grandes Grand Funk Railroad! Gracias por el post.
Mark Farner's voice still sounds great! I was expecting some raspiness, or even a key change but no, still the same as when he was 20 years old! I can only hope my voice holds up like that.,
Don't even tell me his voice is'nt as strong and even sounds similar to Sammy Hagars. The more i hear from he and GFR, the more i realize what i missed in my younger years, thanks to corporate radio.
GFRxR was blackballed in the early days from corporate radio. GFRxR always said they played for their fans, not just to get radio play. The fans reacted tremendously by making them the first band to sell 10 consecutive platinum albums. Doing this WITHOUT radio play, makes this feat even more remarkable.
Why were they blackballed, something to do with their stance on the war?(dixie chicks)
I'm 45, my older bro. played them some when i was to young to groove. but i remember him groovin heavy w/ it.
But when i about 16 i only heard "I'm your Captain" on radio from G-Funk. But over the past 15 yrs. i've blessed myself with so much that i missed. Bands like foreigner, stones, rush and the like got most of the play in late 70's. We lived 55miles south of Flint(a place called Detroit). Ha Thanks!
Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Mark Farner and Grand Funk RR should have been the First inductee. maybe " the first will be last, and the Last first. when it is all over. Rock on Mark!
As with all my GFRxR/Farner videos, there is a link in this video's description to a petition to induct Mark Farner & GFRxR into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. It takes only seconds to sign it. Come on all you Funk Brothers & Sisters. We need your signature & comments!
Chicago loves the "Rock Patriot", his shows demonstrate the enduring spirit and world class appeal of seventies rock . His latest CD , For the People, shows he is still tuned in to the voice of the average man
Amen Brother, that because Mark considers himself just an average man with a different job than others. There is not a Bullshit bone in his Body.I have known him for years and you will only get the truth from him.
Great song. Happy to see Mark still alive and well!

this was released in '70, Helter Skelter was released in '68 and, in my opinion, is definitely harder than this. The Beatles created heavy metal.

LMFAO. The Beatles creating metal. That disgusted me and gave me a good laugh, thanks for that.

you really think that this is the first metal song of all time? what about born to be wild?
Schmann213 2 years ago
Born To Be Wild coined the term "Heavy Metal Thunder."
Do I think it was a metal song, no I don't.
