  • Cheers DC

  • Thanks for a great lesson! My one constructive criticism would be not to play such advanced examples. It's frustrating and a bit discouraging to hear something like that when I'm not able to play it yet, but really want to.

Other than that, fantastic job! You explained everything very thoroughly and clearly. Thanks so much!!

  • Thanks for the teaching video. I'm learning to play the mandolin. I know how to play guitar, so that helps me learn the mandolin. Your lesson is what I need to learn.

  • Is this major, or is it just a standard bluegrass/folk sounding scale?

  • Great stuff Bruce!

You don't talk down to the learner. You make me feel confident that I can progress.

  • Very helpful!

  • Your videos are very straight forward and easy to follow for a beginner like me. Thanks.

  • Bruce - really helpful. Post some more lessons please.

  • Thank you so much for this lesson. i wish you would do more. I see this is your only lesson or video. PLEASE do more when you get a chance. Thanks again, SO much :)

  • first three notes= legend of zelda

  • @TheHandsInControlKil I thought i saw a horse run past...

  • thank you Very clear. Great progression. Simple to getting more complicated, and a way for you as a teacher to get us making sounds that actually sound like music.

  • I had no idea David Cross played the mandolin... okay, I'm kidding... this was a great lesson. I've just recently gotten another mandolin after years (and amputation of left ring finger tip)... this was what I have been looking for. Thank you!

  • this is the exact kind of lessons i was looking for. Thank you

  • very nice

  • Instructive and useful to a beginner like me... thanks, and post some more please.

  • I posted another video (Licks in the Key of A) under the user name BruceKap440. And @joshuabolt is right, I have it wrong at around 4:05. The E is the third, not the 5, and I am hitting a flat third, not a flat 5. Maybe not enough coffee? Or I just can't count!

  • great lesson, thanks!

  • Excellent, having so much fun already, many thanks!

  • Thank-you for sharing Bruce. It's very interesting to hear about the popular songs that the licks can be heard in. :) You demonstrate the patterns well. For a newbie like me, it would help a lot to see how you incorporate your right hand too. I know it's hard to get that all in though!

Thank-you. The licks are really nice! It's very helpful.

  • Very good.

  • this is really cool i really like it thanks but i cant follow ur fingers ur movin to fast lol :) do u think u could break it down for me and how many up downs to do :) thanks

  • Fantastic! thank you!

  • As poor college student that cant afford lesson, THANKS A LOT!

  • Thanks for that. Its a cool lick and your mando has a great tone! What's that double stop you play in "gasoline alley" right after the GACDEF (did I hear that right)?

  • Thanks for the comments. The instrument is a Collings MT - find them used for about $1600. The double stop is 1st finger, 1st string 3rd fret = G with 3rd finger, 2nd string on the 7th fret for an E.

  • excellent playin and lesson

  • Hey folks, thanks for the nice comments. I'll be posting a new lesson in the next week or two. If you enjoyed this lesson, check out my band, Claudia Russell and the folk Unlimited Orchestra, by searching for "Claudia Russell."
