  • I and my ex J fontaine got out of there at the same time but I keep going back to visit, nice town, great people.

  • @CaveTeeth1983 - I agree!

  • I live in selkirk and that was the best parade yet!!!!!!!

  • 2008 was the best parade? This was the 2008 parade, not 2009.

I have my pics ready for the 2009 parade slideshow I'm gonna do, I took over 300, but I'm a huge procrastinator. Hopefully, I will get it up before the end of Sept.

Plus, I'm in the midst of making a "prequel" to the 2009 parade.....it's an animation of 2 employees in the Selkirk town offices discussing the parade, Mayor Bell, and other local matters. Hopefully that will be done before the end of Sept as well.

  • i use to live in that shit hole town about a year ago it sucks asshole get out the first chance you get!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! cuz selkirk sucks hairy balls

  • Selkirk is not that bad. I "got out" and when I did I missed it terribly. Take it for what it is - it's a small Canadian Prairie town, like hundreds of other small towns on the Canadian Prairies. They're not New York, or Toronto, but they don't claim to be. Each town has its own charm.

  • @camecky Shut The Fuck Up , Man Don't Fucking Talk shit . You Suck Hairey Balls .

  • this place looks about as honky as Branson Missouri. whats the weather like in Canada in July? it's too dang hot for a parade in Texas in July. are the older gents with the tall hat's shriners? those dude's are everywhere!!! love the old JD tractors and old cars. cool parade

  • I'm not sure what you mean by "honky". You mean, it's cowboy land? Not exactly. When people think Canadian Prairies, they think flat land, farm land. Probably every community in the Southern half of the province has ties to farming. The most common is cattle farming, then grains, then oilseed. Sunflowers and dry beans abound, and potatoes.

So, that partly explains the tractors and horses and ponys and bull riders and cowboy hats, etc.

  • The parade is also in the middle of the fair weekend. The rodeo dominates the fair.

So, the town is very much connected to farming, and it shows in the parade. You know, I've never given it much thought. It's just always been that way. I have a photo of myself as a toddler, with my siblings, at fair time, and we're all decked out in cowboy outfits. But, you don't normally see people walking around here in cowboy hats. There's no spurs on their boots. It's not like Texas in that sense.

  • I've wondered that myself. In the case of small town parades, I think it's a way for the townspeople to rally together to celebrate their community.

The parade this year was on July 11th. Pre-parade, I saw men shining up their classic cars, little old ladies carrying lawn chairs for blocks, fathers with toddlers on their shoulders....some may call them lame & corny, but there's something very innocent & charming about these parades....they can make even the crustiest curmudgeon proud & happy.

  • Even as a kid, I could never understand this. Just what the hell is the purpose of a parade??

  • I think parades are a vital social function to celebrate the shared bonds of the community. Parades also tend to increase business which stimulates the local economy. By the way, this town looks like a lovely place to live.
