Ruffian would have beaten Sham by many lengths? Like she always did? She never raced Sham. Sham was faster than Ruffian. She was only ahead by half a length when she suffered her tragic and fatal injury against Foolish Pleasure in that match race. It highly questionable whether she would have been ahead at the finish line if she hadn't suffered the injury.
I think Ruffian and Secretariat are the best horses. Ruffian would have beaten Sham by many lengths like she always did. R.I.P. Ruffian, Queen of the Racetrack
Ruffian number 5? Please! Better than Seattle Slew? Citation? Please. Finishing last at the Belmont is not a big deal. Racehorses always finish in wildly diffenent positions if they race more than four or five races. SPORTSGUY, please.... Sham won 5 of 13 races. Including Santa Anita. This was the year of Secretariat. He has the second fastest time at the Derby.
Seabiscuit? War Admiral won all those other races, and you put Seabiscuit ahead of it because of a challenge race?! No Citation, no Seattle Slew? Ruffian better than Seattle Slew?! Sham would have buried Ruffian, Foolish Pleasure, etc. Anyway, we'll never know. And poor Ruffian suffered the greatest loss for the so-called "sport of kings." Cheers.
Is the footage that begins at 8:02 actual race footage? If so, that is awesome!!! I've never seen that before!! I felt so bad for Sham at the Belmont. I hear he never fully recovered from that race. ;(
Sham was a magnificent horse that ultimately had his heart broken by Secretariat - he never raced again after the Belmont. He couldn't.
Sham is in good company of other champion horses that won the Derby and Preakness and failed at Belmont. Amazing to be included in that company considering he din't win any of them and finished dead last at Belmont.
I agree with everyone here. Sham would have won the TC if it wasn't for racing against Secretariat. Sham was a true champion and nobody should ever ignore this.
You know I have commented a number of times on Secretariat but I must take a moment and just say, Sham, way to go!!! The fact you could even keep up with Secretariat just says what a great racehorse you were too! Had you not been born the same year as Secretariat, no doubt you would have been the triple crown winner. But fate stepped in. Here's to Sham, also one of the greatest racehorses ever!
Ive always thought of Sham as just another competitor of who Secretariat defeated but hes not, after watching this video its like WOW he was truly amazing, he gave everything he had the day of the Belmont, he may have lost but it just proves he was strong and would not go down without a fight, every single time you watched him race against Secretariat he gave him a run for his money, Secretariat is amazing and my favorite race horse but Sham is the real Cinderella story here....
Forgetting that Sham finished 5th in the Belmont are we? Sham didnt break the derby record because Secretariat had just set the record in front of him.
Sham was an incredibly fast horse, as proven at the Derby, but I won't go so far as to say that he wins the TC if not for Secretariat. Sham would probably have been one of the many good horses to win the Derby and Preakness but lose in the Belmont if not for Secretariat.
It is a Shame that he was born the same year as the Great Secretariat, but... in the Belmont Sham was not just beaten by Big Red but by most of the field as well.. was that because he was chasing Big Red... Maybe, but Big Brown Smarty Jones, Silver Charm and 8 others have all WON the Derby and Preakness since 1978, only to place but lose in the Belmont.. Silver Charm Lost by 1/2 length, Sham did not even place he was spent.. Best Loser of all time.. Alydar. He was 2nd in all 3 races to Affirmed
@davejoyal Yeah he was beaten by four of the five horses that day but Shams team elected to put on the pace which affected his race entirely. I remember Sham by everytime mentions the great secretariat I bring Sham's name up as well. Kind of like Alydar. Alydar just couldn't get by Affirmed in 78 but was a great racehorse in his own right. I think of Sham the same way.
I feel bad for Sham. He was an amazing horse, but Secretariat was just better. No body gives Sham proper recignition because he was always in Secretariats shadow, any other year he would've cleaned up, he just got unlucky
Well done, as always...Sham was just not in league with Secretariat distance wise. With his pedigree, at best a mile, even on turf too. But SS & Pancho never thought of that venture. But that is my opinion. Sometimes, you can't win them all. Secretariat could havewon Aintree Grand National against Red Rum. A 22lb heart vs. 14lb heart ?
And if you know Princequillo, he was bred to run till the sun set. 6F to 2 miles easily.
Thanks for the video. Sham showed what he was made of in the first 3/4 mile of the Belmont running side by side with Big Red. They were reeling off splits that would do a sprint horse proud. It was thrilling to watch on one hand but terrible to see a very good horse being used up like that. Often wondered why they didn't run Sham on grass. If he liked grass, he could very well have been the champion he was born to be and gotten the recognition he deserved.
Kierkegaard73, you may be the absolute BEST horse racing videographer on YouTube. Another masterpiece! As for Sham, he won only 5 of 13 races, and he never raced again after the 1973 Belmont. His trainer, Pancho Martin, ran the poor horse into the ground trying to keep up with Secretariat in all three Triple Crown Races. Sham is more a story of what could have been. His career at stud was less than spectacular. So to rank Sham even in the top 100 is extremely questinonable.
@TheProfessorOfLife Sham has the 2nd fastest Derby time in history and one of the fastest Preakness times ever. Take Sec. out of the picture and Sham would have won the Preakness and Derby by EIGHT lengths. Sham tied the 2nd fastest last quarter of the Derby ever in one of the deepest fields ever to run. He won the San Anita in record tying time. His average length of victory since breaking his maiden was SIX lengths. His biggest mistake was being poorly managed. Indeed Sec. wore him down.
@Sportsguy574 OK, so maybe Sham belongs in the top 100, but winning only 5 of 13 races is certainly not spectacular. Pancho Martin should have been banned from horse racing for what he did to Sham. It's a miracle Sham didn't break down during any one of the Triple Crown races. The way Pincay laid the whip on Sham in all three races was ridiculous.
@TheProfessorOfLife Sham did only win 5 races but he came in 2nd 5 times as well. I agree not spectacular but not terrible. I have no doubt Sham would have won the belmont without Sec. for the simple fact he wouldnt have been run into the ground by race time. He put up incredible fractions before Sec. lost him that day, he was fresh enough to easily beat the other horses. Yes, I still go with the 153.2 time for the preakness for Sec. Sham was terribly managed and had unbelievable potential.
@TheProfessorOfLife Also, both experts and laymen alike without a doubt know that Sham was a Triple Crown winner any other year. I'm curious, how many other horses do you know that can list the same credentials as Sham? And while this MIGHT not have mattered in his racing, at autopsy he was found to have the 2nd biggest heart ever in a racehorse, only to Sec. While I respect your opinion, for you to say he isnt in the top 100, well it sounds like you know nothing about him. What could have been.
@Sportsguy574 I have serious doubts that Sham could have won the Belmont even without Secretariat in the race. I'm sure you are aware of the fact that, back in 1973, the race times for place and show horses were not officially recorded, so we don't know for sure if Sham ran the second fastest Derby. In the Preakness, the "official" race clock was damaged, and Secretariat's Preakness time is actually one full second faster than the "official" time, according to the Daily Racing Form.
People just don't realize how important home field advantage is. We need a Triple Crown race here in the West Coast. I'm telling you it would have been a different outcome if the 2nd leg would have been run at Sant Anita, Sham's backyard.
@rodd7 So what is the bid deal with west coast horse racing? Is the air thinner? Maybe more polluted? Are the spectators different? Are the racetracks covered in broken glass? What does location have to do with how good a horse is? A great race horse doesn't care where he races, and can race on any surface.
Excellent video. I remember Sham well. I had watched him in person in the San Felipe and Santa Anita Derby. I was sure he could beat Secretariat in the Kentucky Derby, but Secretariat was at his best in the Triple Crown races. Sham still remains one of my 10 favorite race horses of all time.
Saw the Dizzney movie last night and was appalled at the portrayal of Sham and owners. A great movie could have been made about these two horses, but it turned into a deification of one and belittlement of the other. Secretariat was a great horse and Sham was only slightly in his shadow.
Sham was a great race horse but even if secretariat wouldn't have raced at belmont I believe sham would have still lost. He started getting tired and was caught by the other horses.
@The1970lemans He would have beaten the others. That was clear from the Preakness and Kentucky Derby showings. He started getting tired! Why yes he did. He was running the fastest Belmont time ever trying to keep up with that God of a horse. Had he run a more managed race, he would have had enough to take the field at Belmont. Keep in mind Sham's KD time was the second fastest in history only Secretariat's was faster.
This was a tremendous video and I'm glad you made it. Sham did have the misfortune of being born the same year as Big Red (who I dearly love). But Sham was a great horse in his own right and should not be forgotten b/c of his date of birth or who his TC rival was. And RAV52, Big Red didn't help Sham's destiny. Sham made his own - it just happens to most remembered b/c of the TC that Secretariat won. Sham won 5 his own races not linked to Secretariat. You might want to read up on them.

I've always thought Sham was one of the all-time greats. I really was surprised that, when asked during an interview, Pincay said the greatest horse he ever rode was Affirmed (not Sham). I think it's too bad that they pushed Sham so hard in the Belmont. I've wondered whether it somehow weakened him, ultimately leading to his career-ending injury? Because otherwise, with Secretariat out of the picture after 1973, Sham could have racked up some wins as a 4-year old and beyond.
Sham was a very tough competitor, and a very good colt in his own right. But he'll be forever remembered as the colt in 1973 that Secretariat destroyed in all three leg's, especially the Belmont Stakes, of the Triple Crown. IMO.
i am a huge Secretariat fan, but i do hope Sham gets his due, and maybe what some will see as "redemption" in later years...perhaps one of Sham's progeny will be a Triple Crown winner....
Thank you for taking the time to make this wonderful video. Sham was truly a winner. Most casual racing fans could probably not name all the KY Derby winners from just the past 3 years, but this colt lives on in memory 30 years after losing his races. If that is not greatness I don't know what is.
If it wasnt for shams competition maybe sec wouldnt have been as great! But it was sham who helped pushed SEC into inmortality. Give me SEC and Sham against any other horse over the past 110yrs!
Does anybody out there know if there are any of Sham's progeny out there racing today? Anyone famous? Anybody just iffy? Surely Sham went to stud......I am just curious.
Watching this and realizing Sham broke the Derby record and losing speaks volumes about he and Big Red. Another TC ill-fated, born in the "wrong" year horse comes to mind as well, Alydar. While Affirmed was a great horse he was not THE super horse Secretariat was, that title being reserved by the Gods of racing to a select few horses. In their 4 meetings on the track Sham gave him everything he could and it is no disgrace losing to a horse who sets records in all 3 TC races.
Many things to say about Sham...You know there is always an underdog in any competition but Sham was NO underdog he was a champion that was never credited his full worth....Another thing to mention is look at the times this horse was putting out on those tracks...Hands down, champion all the way...Oh he had it, he had what it took and besides being overshadowed by another great this horse deserved so much more then what he received being a horse of his caliber. No other now or ever will compare.
Secretariat was a marvel, but as a 10 year old at the time of the 73 Triple Crown, Sham always had my heart. What a beautiful courageous colt he was. Thank you so much for honoring him in this video.
sham was an amazing and great horse, huge heart too. but this year in '73 he had to come along and settle next best to the most perfect equine that ever lived. sham was so wonderful and it is always difficult to find information and photos about him, other than the usual basics we all know. this video elegantly presents sham in a wonderful perspective. i have never seen sham's conformation shot. thanks for this very well done video, well needed about sham
I wholeheartedly agree Sportsguy574. He was a marvel himself. His determination as well as physical ability was unmatched except by Secretariat. Sham added to the Secretariat legacy, When you watch Sham you wonder "how could this horse ever lose"? He just couldn't beat the greatest of them all.
I'll say it right now...in my opinion...Sham was the 2nd greatest race horse that ever set foot on a track. No other horse could have pushed Secretariat the way he did. How remarkable they were born in the same year. Obviously he was a triple crown winner any other year. He blew away everyone except Sec. Of course its all relative and its impossible to say for sure. But ill take Sec. and Sham 1-2 against any combination of horses in history. You arent forgotten Sham. Thanks for the memories.
Thanks sportsguy, not just for this comment but for all of the ones you have made on my videos. I find sports is often the best arena to showcase the nobility of man. - To juxtapose the Individual as over/against the masses. Maybe there is no "i" in the word team, but there is the word "me" and not the word "we". lol
@Sportsguy574, Sham may be the only racehorse that could've pushed Secretariat on the track the way he did, modern day era of racing, or during the National T.V. era of racing. But how could you say that, about all horses, when there's no way of knowing how Man O' War or Citation would've pushed Secretariat on the track?
@GBeret83 Hey GBeret I just noticed your comment. You are right, one cant know for sure. It is just my opinion. I think MOW is overrated but Citation, Whirlaway, Count Fleet & Seattle Slew all would have been fun to watch, and countless others. But in MY opinion, going a 1 1/4, I'd take Sec and Sham 1-2 over any other combo. Sham going under 2:00 in the derby and being a triple crown winner any other year is testament to his talent when compared to other horses thru the ages. Thanks.
@Sportsguy574 WOW,You have seen EVERY horse ever to set hoof on a race track? How old are you? Where did Sham finish in the Belmont? How many horses beat him that day?Maybe he was the one pushed by Secretariat... NO, Secretariat would come from behind to beat Sham, and when Secretariat did push Sham, Secretariat broke his will. I do not believe it is "obvious" Sham was a Triple Crown winner in any other year. "No other horse could have pushed Secretariat" the way Sham did is an opinion.
@LSUfanhere Well, lets see, the fact you literally think I have seen every horse to step on a race track, coupled with the 2 dimensional argument you set forth with the rest of your paragraph, tells me not only do you have deeper issues, but you aren't worth a good discussion involving anything horse related, as I have with many others on various videos, as you clearly lack enough knowledge to make it worth my while lol. Good day to you though. Maybe try a different video.
@Sportsguy574 I was riding before I ever learned to ride a bicycle.Raised on a working farm.Horses all my life. I know a thing or two about them.I simply think to say Sham was the 2nd greatest race horse ever is a bold and foolish statement. I am not entirely sure Secretariat was the greatest ever- yes, from the United States, but ever,in the world,in all of history?Too many people think history is limited to their life time and knowledge.Thank you for the wish of a good day, and the same to you.
You make sense, but Laffit Pincay has said many times Affirmed was the best horse he ever road. You simply can't argue with the one guy qualified to have an opinion.
@sargeanthulka: Actually there is reason to think otherwise here. For a winnning jockey like Pincay it would be far more pleasant to talk about his memories of the triple-crown he won than about the triple-crown he lost, even if his earlier horse (Sham) was clearly faster than the horse he later won on (Affirmed).
@eckythimble Laffit Pincay was Alydar's jockey not Affirmed. Steve Cauthen was Affirmed's jockey. They were the greatest of rivals even as 2 year olds. Alydar is the first and I believe still the only horse to finish 2nd in all three TC races finishing behind Affirmed each time.
@Sportsguy574 Sham's place in horse racing history is assured. However his placement among the greatest would be stretching a bit: He finished dead last, figuratively and literally at Belmont - Sec broke his heart and he never raced again. Sham's Win place show record is suspect..try finding it somewhere. For certain Sham ranks among the 7 previous horses that won the Derby and Preakness which is amazing cause he didn't. The video is nice but doesn't show sham winning any races?
You can never question Sham's heart or ability. He's horse racing's Joe Frazier. He won 1 from Secretariat, but never beat him again. Frazier won 1 from Ali, but never beat him again either. Unfortunate that he was born in 1970. If he had been born 1 year earlier, or 1 year later, we'd probably have 12 horses who have won the triple crown. Sham was a winner all the way maybe the second greatest horse that ever lived. Yep, maybe even better than Man O' War. RIP Sham.
They never should have named him Sham.... because it turned out to be a sham that a horse of his ability would be so overshadowed! I watched him win the Santa Anita Derby and remained in denial of Secretariat's stature until the Belmont.
Yes, Sham definitely gave us a show, we always forget he had the second fastest Kentucky Derby time 1:59 4/5. It's incredible. My heart aches for this horse, rich dark bay, beautiful Sham. He and Secretariat had the same maternal grandsire, Princequillo.
yes, i agree. his maternal grandsire provided the genetic link to the massive heart that both he and secretariat had. though secretariat's heart was larger, sham's heart was massive too. and sham was a brilliant competitor and a great horse, no doubt.
And thanks for a great piece. It was Sham's performance in the Preakness that inspired me to place $20 on him in the Belmont. Sham went after Secretariat in the Preakness backstretch which was a pretty gutsy move...and Secretariat never really shook him. Sham's performance in the Belmont, despite a distance that proved way too long for him, was the best twenty bucks I ever lost.
WOW!!! THANK YOU so much for creating this masterpiece!! Rough Draft? I can't wait to see the final version! For years now I have been a Sham fan, and have wondered why he has been nothing more than a footnote in Thoroughbred Racing history, when clearly he would have been a triple crown winner in any other year. Add to that the fact he raced so gallantly with an "engine" (heart) whose physical size was smaller than that of the Great Big Red. Sham was so gallant. Your video does him justice.
Never knew that Sham went into the race, having been kicked in the head and had lost a couple of teeth. If Secretariat had not won so astoundingly, authoritatively, the world would have forever doubted Secretariat's ability. The question was, would it be Sham's day to win. But what a great horse, a beauty. I couldn't have run a race had I had my head kicked and lost a couple of teeth.
another horse that would have most certainly won a triple crown would have been alydar had he run a different year than Affirmed tragic the way that horse died killed to collect insurance money disgusting way to treat a champion horse like alydar...and your right Sham was a class horse any other year and he is a Triple Crown winner i agree with LastTree on that one
Sham was a great old horse. I saw him in 1989, the day after I saw Secretariat. He was the most "retired" horse one would ever see, and the grooms said he was a "lazy" horse. He deserved some rest and relaxation after running after the greatest racehorse of all time.
Sham was an awesome, beautiful horse. His inability to stop Secretariat only adds to his credentials in the face of the horses he *did* outrun. People forget that...he outran Mr. Prospector, among others. He was the only horse to press Secretariat in the Belmont.
@JanH1961 Umm Secretariat was never "pressed" during the Belmont. His only point of reference was himself. I think Sham was able to achieve as much as he did BECAUSE he had the Great One setting the example.
I enjoyed the video. I was thoroughly impressed with the footage - most of it I had never seen before. Sham has fascinated me. I have scoured the Internet for years searching for information about him; to finally see video footage that showcases him as comprehensively as this video does helps to fill that void of curiosity. The music score is beautiful, befitting of the theme, and it evokes admiration.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
In another era he could possibly be a false champion. I follow this game, I love this game(horse racing), I don't want to downplay what was obvuiously a very good horse but he wasn't a true champion. That's all I can say.
When are we going to start talking Curlin, I wonder? (and this coming from a proud Australian of all things). I understand the Barbaro hype but Curlin....
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I see my Curlin comment got a thumbs down. How do you rate him against say Barbaro? I watched Curlin win the Dubai World Cup and thought "F*ckin jesus, this horse is a f*ckin horse racing machine". I know for a fact there is no Aussie horse that could even blow wind near Curlins arse over a mile or longer. Maybe I should be looking up Curlin clips on youtube lol! :)
Ballarat is a major town in Victoria did you know? Anyway Sham wasn't the greatest horse Secretariat was. By the way I hate the word 'was' sometimes, because as far as record times go Big Red still is by a very long way the best horse I have ever seen and a second faster than anything else over a mile and a half on dirt.
Just echoing my friend cf1970's earlier comment, it's awesome to put a face to the legendary voice of Chic Anderson. This has to be the first time I've seen what he looked like after all these years! Thanks :)
What a wonderful and well overdue tribute to one of horse racings most gallant warriors. What great races he ran. He pushed Big Red to even greater heights. Thanks so much for showing everyone what a fighter Sham was. Kierkegaarde, well done!
Sham deserves to be remembered. Though it won't count,he to broke the Kentucky Derby stakes record on that day. That in itself assures his high class as a racehorse. If he had been born in another year I believe he would have walked away with the triple crown,he was that good,R.I.P. buddy. I'm glad someone is saluting Sham, for he deserved it.
ive always wanted to see the post parade of this race and i cant beleive that secretariat was so calm warming up and then exploded like he did during the race i always like horses who are a bit jumpy like sham was before the race
Thanks you for highlighting Sham. I owned a great-grandson of Sham, Shamstime. He is a 17hd dark bay, ran in WA state, retired sound, like his grandfather he had tremendous "bone". He went on to do cross country, then just show jumping, then dresssage and trails. He has a kind calm demeanor and is always a total gentleman - the love of my horsey life!
What a wonderful job with this....Wonderful music, paper clips, interview clips, great!!!! He did okay at stud but never produced someone like himself...he and Sec were related through Princequillo...he too had that large heart....Again, had he been born a year later he would have been the next TCW....
I almost agree with you. You said - "Again, had he been born a year later he would have been the next TCW" I say any other year!! He in my opinion is a better horse all the other TCWs. Sham is one of my favorites. AP Indy - The Biscuit - Smarty Jones I like the little guys!!
Again, all related through the Princequillo line...Smarty Jones and AP Indy related to Sec....Sec related to Sham...Sham would have been a TCW any other year.
i agree i heard but dont know that sham put up better times in the triple crown than other triple winners the only race he couldve lost was the belmont but he finished last cause that dumbass french faggot jockey he had lafayette pancake or whatever his name is killed him trying to keep up with secretariat otherwise i think he wouldve won all 3
Are you referencing the "Panamanian" Jockey who has the most winnings of any thoroughbred Jockey in history, who defied his trainers orders of taking the lead at all costs, and saved Sham's life by defying those orders and pulling him back? You mean that Jockey?
K, this is awesome. There is so little out there about Sham and I have always wanted to know more about this amazing animal. I know people have said it before but I'll say it again; had he been born at another time, he would have been a name all his own. He was a stand out above stand outs. But we only know him now only in conjunction with Secretariat. You said it best when you said "Courage, thy name is Sham." Thank you so much for doing this video. Just curious -do you know how tall he was?
Thank you for the wonderful video. Makes me wonder though. Why does God do this? Create two great horses in one year? Affirmed and Alydar, Sunday Silence and Easy Goer not to mention these two.
Thank You, Thank you, Thank You! At last a video honoring Sham!!! The newspaper clippings was a fantastic idea. I also loved the Autobiography reference on the Sig Sommer part! "The race is between Secretariat and Sham"
Bravo K. Thank you. I have the entire CBS broadcasts of all 3 TC races(watch them often) , but had not seen the newspaper articles. I look forward to the other installments & your unique style. Sham was an excellent horse & I think would have won the TC in any other year. Just his misfortune to be a 3 yr. old with SECRETARIAT. Welcome Back!!!
You did a great job on this! Sham probably would have won the Triple Crown without Secretariat, no question in my mind. What a great rivalry that was! I saw Secretariat back in the day, and it is so nice to see some of the extra footage you include. It's good to hear what people were thinking, before Secretariat ran off with it all.
Sham was a truly great horse. There is nothing "greater" than running your heart out, even when "beaten". But for Secretariat, Sham would have been seen more for the stunning racehorse he was, than the "second" place finisher be became. Kierkegaard, this is a very fine video. Thank-you. I admire Sham as much as Secretariat, perhaps for different reasons. Thank-you. Cheers.
K, this is absolutely wonderful...Sham, beautiful Sham. Glorious images of him and I especially loved the picture of he and Secretariat nose-to-nose...priceless.
It was also awesome to finally see the legendary Chic Anderson, THE man, after hearing his voice for so many classic calls; I'd never seen his image before, anywhere.

Citation? Please. Finishing last at the Belmont is not a big deal. i agree with Sportsguy but i have to say this:
1 Man O War
2 Secretariat
3 Phar Lap
4 Seabiscuit
5 Ruffian
I AM TRULLY SORRY!
but Sham actually was not better than any of those i mentioned above

00horsecrazy00 9 months ago
It is a Shame that he was born the same year as the Great Secretariat, but... in the Belmont Sham was not just beaten by Big Red but by most of the field as well.. was that because he was chasing Big Red... Maybe, but Big Brown Smarty Jones, Silver Charm and 8 others have all WON the Derby and Preakness since 1978, only to place but lose in the Belmont.. Silver Charm Lost by 1/2 length, Sham did not even place he was spent.. Best Loser of all time.. Alydar. He was 2nd in all 3 races to Affirmed
davejoyal 10 months ago
@davejoyal Yeah he was beaten by four of the five horses that day but Shams team elected to put on the pace which affected his race entirely. I remember Sham by everytime mentions the great secretariat I bring Sham's name up as well. Kind of like Alydar. Alydar just couldn't get by Affirmed in 78 but was a great racehorse in his own right. I think of Sham the same way.

I feel bad for Sham. He was an amazing horse, but Secretariat was just better. No body gives Sham proper recignition because he was always in Secretariats shadow, any other year he would've cleaned up, he just got unlucky

breyergirl606 11 months ago
Well done, as always...Sham was just not in league with Secretariat distance wise. With his pedigree, at best a mile, even on turf too. But SS & Pancho never thought of that venture. But that is my opinion. Sometimes, you can't win them all. Secretariat could havewon Aintree Grand National against Red Rum. A 22lb heart vs. 14lb heart ?
And if you know Princequillo, he was bred to run till the sun set. 6F to 2 miles easily.
lorason61 1 year ago
Thanks for the video. Sham showed what he was made of in the first 3/4 mile of the Belmont running side by side with Big Red. They were reeling off splits that would do a sprint horse proud. It was thrilling to watch on one hand but terrible to see a very good horse being used up like that. Often wondered why they didn't run Sham on grass. If he liked grass, he could very well have been the champion he was born to be and gotten the recognition he deserved.
THE0591301 1 year ago
Kierkegaard73, you may be the absolute BEST horse racing videographer on YouTube. Another masterpiece! As for Sham, he won only 5 of 13 races, and he never raced again after the 1973 Belmont. His trainer, Pancho Martin, ran the poor horse into the ground trying to keep up with Secretariat in all three Triple Crown Races. Sham is more a story of what could have been. His career at stud was less than spectacular. So to rank Sham even in the top 100 is extremely questinonable.
TheProfessorOfLife 1 year ago
@TheProfessorOfLife Sham has the 2nd fastest Derby time in history and one of the fastest Preakness times ever. Take Sec. out of the picture and Sham would have won the Preakness and Derby by EIGHT lengths. Sham tied the 2nd fastest last quarter of the Derby ever in one of the deepest fields ever to run. He won the San Anita in record tying time. His average length of victory since breaking his maiden was SIX lengths. His biggest mistake was being poorly managed. Indeed Sec. wore him down.
Sportsguy574 1 year ago
@Sportsguy574 OK, so maybe Sham belongs in the top 100, but winning only 5 of 13 races is certainly not spectacular. Pancho Martin should have been banned from horse racing for what he did to Sham. It's a miracle Sham didn't break down during any one of the Triple Crown races. The way Pincay laid the whip on Sham in all three races was ridiculous.
TheProfessorOfLife 1 year ago
@TheProfessorOfLife Sham did only win 5 races but he came in 2nd 5 times as well. I agree not spectacular but not terrible. I have no doubt Sham would have won the belmont without Sec. for the simple fact he wouldnt have been run into the ground by race time. He put up incredible fractions before Sec. lost him that day, he was fresh enough to easily beat the other horses. Yes, I still go with the 153.2 time for the preakness for Sec. Sham was terribly managed and had unbelievable potential.
Sportsguy574 1 year ago
@TheProfessorOfLife Also, both experts and laymen alike without a doubt know that Sham was a Triple Crown winner any other year. I'm curious, how many other horses do you know that can list the same credentials as Sham? And while this MIGHT not have mattered in his racing, at autopsy he was found to have the 2nd biggest heart ever in a racehorse, only to Sec. While I respect your opinion, for you to say he isnt in the top 100, well it sounds like you know nothing about him. What could have been.
Sportsguy574 1 year ago
@Sportsguy574 I have serious doubts that Sham could have won the Belmont even without Secretariat in the race. I'm sure you are aware of the fact that, back in 1973, the race times for place and show horses were not officially recorded, so we don't know for sure if Sham ran the second fastest Derby. In the Preakness, the "official" race clock was damaged, and Secretariat's Preakness time is actually one full second faster than the "official" time, according to the Daily Racing Form.

People just don't realize how important home field advantage is. We need a Triple Crown race here in the West Coast. I'm telling you it would have been a different outcome if the 2nd leg would have been run at Sant Anita, Sham's backyard.
rodd7 1 year ago

4bevo 1 year ago
Saw the Dizzney movie last night and was appalled at the portrayal of Sham and owners. A great movie could have been made about these two horses, but it turned into a deification of one and belittlement of the other. Secretariat was a great horse and Sham was only slightly in his shadow.

Sham was a great race horse but even if secretariat wouldn't have raced at belmont I believe sham would have still lost. He started getting tired and was caught by the other horses.
The1970lemans 1 year ago

IMO.

Thank you for taking the time to make this wonderful video. Sham was truly a winner. Most casual racing fans could probably not name all the KY Derby winners from just the past 3 years, but this colt lives on in memory 30 years after losing his races. If that is not greatness I don't know what is.

In their 4 meetings on the track Sham gave him everything he could and it is no disgrace losing to a horse who sets records in all 3 TC races.

moonligh111 2 years ago
Many things to say about Sham...You know there is always an underdog in any competition but Sham was NO underdog he was a champion that was never credited his full worth....Another thing to mention is look at the times this horse was putting out on those tracks...Hands down, champion all the way...Oh he had it, he had what it took and besides being overshadowed by another great this horse deserved so much more then what he received being a horse of his caliber. No other now or ever will compare.

MelC1954 2 years ago 5
I'll say it right now...in my opinion...Sham was the 2nd greatest race horse that ever set foot on a track. No other horse could have pushed Secretariat the way he did. How remarkable they were born in the same year. Obviously he was a triple crown winner any other year. He blew away everyone except Sec. Of course its all relative and its impossible to say for sure. But ill take Sec. and Sham 1-2 against any combination of horses in history. You arent forgotten Sham. Thanks for the memories.
Sportsguy574 2 years ago 26
Thanks sportsguy, not just for this comment but for all of the ones you have made on my videos. I find sports is often the best arena to showcase the nobility of man. - To juxtapose the Individual as over/against the masses. Maybe there is no "i" in the word team, but there is the word "me" and not the word "we". lol
Kierkegaard73 2 years ago
@Sportsguy574, Sham may be the only racehorse that could've pushed Secretariat on the track the way he did, modern day era of racing, or during the National T.V. era of racing. But how could you say that, about all horses, when there's no way of knowing how Man O' War or Citation would've pushed Secretariat on the track?
GBeret83 1 year ago 2

LSUfanhere 11 months ago
@LSUfanhere Well, lets see, the fact you literally think I have seen every horse to step on a race track, coupled with the 2 dimensional argument you set forth with the rest of your paragraph, tells me not only do you have deeper issues, but you aren't worth a good discussion involving anything horse related, as I have with many others on various videos, as you clearly lack enough knowledge to make it worth my while lol. Good day to you though. Maybe try a different video.
Sportsguy574 10 months ago
@Sportsguy574 I was riding before I ever learned to ride a bicycle.Raised on a working farm.Horses all my life. I know a thing or two about them.I simply think to say Sham was the 2nd greatest race horse ever is a bold and foolish statement. I am not entirely sure Secretariat was the greatest ever- yes, from the United States, but ever,in the world,in all of history?Too many people think history is limited to their life time and knowledge.Thank you for the wish of a good day, and the same to you.
LSUfanhere 10 months ago
You make sense, but Laffit Pincay has said many times Affirmed was the best horse he ever road. You simply can't argue with the one guy qualified to have an opinion.
sargeanthulka 7 months ago
@sargeanthulka: Actually there is reason to think otherwise here. For a winnning jockey like Pincay it would be far more pleasant to talk about his memories of the triple-crown he won than about the triple-crown he lost, even if his earlier horse (Sham) was clearly faster than the horse he later won on (Affirmed).
eckythimble 6 months ago
@eckythimble Laffit Pincay was Alydar's jockey not Affirmed. Steve Cauthen was Affirmed's jockey. They were the greatest of rivals even as 2 year olds. Alydar is the first and I believe still the only horse to finish 2nd in all three TC races finishing behind Affirmed each time.
mrlove1961 3 months ago
@Sportsguy574 Sham's place in horse racing history is assured. However his placement among the greatest would be stretching a bit: He finished dead last, figuratively and literally at Belmont - Sec broke his heart and he never raced again. Sham's Win place show record is suspect..try finding it somewhere. For certain Sham ranks among the 7 previous horses that won the Derby and Preakness which is amazing cause he didn't. The video is nice but doesn't show sham winning any races?
80cathryn 5 months ago
You can never question Sham's heart or ability. He's horse racing's Joe Frazier. He won 1 from Secretariat, but never beat him again. Frazier won 1 from Ali, but never beat him again either. Unfortunate that he was born in 1970. If he had been born 1 year earlier, or 1 year later, we'd probably have 12 horses who have won the triple crown. Sham was a winner all the way maybe the second greatest horse that ever lived. Yep, maybe even better than Man O' War. RIP Sham.
MelC1954 2 years ago
They never should have named him Sham.... because it turned out to be a sham that a horse of his ability would be so overshadowed! I watched him win the Santa Anita Derby and remained in denial of Secretariat's stature until the Belmont.
Poor, great Sham! He gave us the show, too!
ratso444 2 years ago 2
Yes, Sham definitely gave us a show, we always forget he had the second fastest Kentucky Derby time 1:59 4/5. It's incredible. My heart aches for this horse, rich dark bay, beautiful Sham. He and Secretariat had the same maternal grandsire, Princequillo.
bon1042 2 years ago 4
yes, i agree. his maternal grandsire provided the genetic link to the massive heart that both he and secretariat had. though secretariat's heart was larger, sham's heart was massive too. and sham was a brilliant competitor and a great horse, no doubt.
starzinliberty 2 years ago
Hello,
And thanks for a great piece.

Congrats on a superb video, my friend! Kudos!
God bless.
