Very Cool! Were you able to get it to play loud enough for live performance? Can you change the velocity of the hits? What type of actuators did you use? Congratulations.
I am doing research into midi controlled drums. I was wondering what kind of midi decoder (custom or kit?) you were using and what kind of output they have wise. I am trying to figure out how powerful my solenoids have to be in order to make a robot drum set capable of playing with live instruments such as me on electric guitar. I need to make sure it can be loud enough. not at deafening levels just at a reasonable stage volume.
actually these drums are programmed to keep (perfect) real time, they just dont lose time like a real drummer, ya got your knowledge mixed up , but i understand what you mean. Real drummers have human errors. Programming doesn't. The intent behind the drums aren't to replace drummmers but to avoid dealing with the constant beating real drummers seem to do during any form of a performance.
Its a cool idea, but i have to wonder about how complex of patterns these can really play.
Like intricate rolls and fills.
Also when i hear rolls or fills with these they sound "mechanical" lol...like no feeling its just a roll or fill of the same velocity...like 10 exactly same sounding snare beats...lacks feeling
Thanks for kind words samkirbhead. song is by band Palo Alto. they have a video if you search by "palo alto goldsboro". Drummer designed these drums b/c he is an awesome guitarist as well and wanted to play both.
mad one ...it sounds so human too like you recorded the midi via a midi kit with real drummer. its really weird to be paning around this kit with a camcorder and not see a drummer..hahaa....
I want one. For real! Contact me.

Hi,
Your actuators seem really nice.
What parts are you using ?
And how strong is the retractor spring ?
good work.

Nice way to burn out 10-15 relays in no time at all........You should have gone with FET's or transistors.....maybe next time you'll get it right.
