As I understand it, the Lancaster was superior in payload except the late entry B29. It had great engines and other features, as well. It was, however, not the most graceful looking airplane ever made by a long shot. Nonetheless, who can argue against results.
BTW: The DC-3 was the most graceful looking airplane ever designed as far as looking like it was meant to fly. Just my opinion and, yes, everyone has one.
GooRouix. And let's not forget when the german heinkel bobmbers roasted london and other cities over here. Don't slg pff our heritage and we won't slag off yours. It was a war between two governments. The lancaster was only a tool ok.
I dare say she looks in good condition, and could still deliver 7 tons of whatever she had to carry at a point almost 3 thousand miles away with 7 crewmembers on board.
@pacificthunderfly Simple answer- PRICELESS. She is a British aviation icon & a flying memorial to the 55,000 British & Commonwealth aircrews who never made it home. The RAF's sledgehammer- the hardest hitting bomber of WW 2.
@jrobertsoneff How predictable & trite. Get off your soapbox & remember that exactly because of sacrifices made by RAF Bomber Command, YOU still possess freedom of speach to spout off about German civilian casualties. Thank you for pointing out the obvious ie approx 600,000 Germans died as a consequence of the allied strategic bombing campaign. Now it's my turn- WHO started it? Who murdered at least 6 million Jews, not to mention Slavs, Czechs, trade unionists, handicapped etc Need I say more?
@LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH We must remember not to go down the nazi path of accusing peaple because of thier nationality or race.We should assume all civilians are innocent .And in the grand total of human suffering surely deserve a hearing.
@jrobertsoneff Clearly you miss the salient point about WW 2, it was a total war, fought not just by soldiers, sailors & airmen, but civilians. WHO manufactured the armaments for the Nazi regime? To degrade the Nazi state's war fighting capability, it was essential to target factories & those who worked within them. There is no such thing as a 'clean,' war. Interestingly, more Germans died of starvation in WW1 as a consequence of the Royal Navy blockade. Starvation is anymore acceptable!?
@LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH It was the u.s airforce that conributed most towards winning the war ,by daylight bombing of oil refinerys and aircraft factorys ,and the use of the long range mustang fighterThis must have convinced the germans more of allies honourable intentions, and so denied Goebells the use of properganda he gained from killing civilians.
@jrobertsoneff Actually it was the Red Army that contributed most to winning the war. It is impossible to distinguish between the effectiveness of the RAF & USAAF raids. The RAF devastated German cities & industrial centres- look what they did to U-Boat production in Hamburg. The P-51 was fairly useless until the British replaced the feeble Allison engine with the Merlin, so the USAAF can thank us for giving them the best escort fighter of WW2. The raids tied down 1.5 million German troops.
@jrobertsoneff The RAF night raids also forced the Luftwaffe to deploy and increasing number of personnel to man the air defence system, ever heard of the Kammhuber line? The world's most sophisticated air defence system at the time. The Luftwaffe were also forced to deploy and increasing number of aircraft to night air defence. The combined effect of the allied effort caused the Luftwaffe to withdraw huge aviation resources from the Ost Front.
@LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH Your right the yanks did have different attitude towards the japs ,this is probably to do with a large german population as in eisenhower, and nimitz .So maybe this attitude was different because of anglo german rivalrys. But didn;t the yanks have a sophisticated bombsight anyway ?
@jrobertsoneff The USAAF made great claims about it's bomb sight, and went to great lengths to keep it's design classified. They boasted that they could, "Put a bomb in a pickle barrel from 20,000 feet." In reality, this was complete and utter hogwash. The USAAF claims of in relation to 'precision' bombing were nonsense. When the RAF eventually got to examine the much vaunted bomb sight, it offered no significant advantage/improvement over the unit utilised by the RAF!
@LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH These heavy bombers were designed in the 30;s so brit policy was clear from the start, german bombers were dfesigned for a land war in europe to support troops .This does not excuse nazi policys ,but it does take some of the gloss off the R.A.F .
@jrobertsoneff I am not so sure that it does. RAF doctrine was heavily influenced by Trenchard- "The bomber will ALWAYS get through." This led them to conclude that the best defence against a bomber, was another bomber. The Germans meanwhile developed mainly tactical bombers to support their armies with Blitzkrieg. They failed to appreciate the need for a strategic bomber until the Battle Of Britain, and they had no such machine at the time. They duly failed to develope an effective heavy.
@LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH They didn;y seem to have this problem with v weapons .It was a good job that hitler was obsessed with land warfare ,instead of aerial bombardment early in the war.
@jrobertsoneff Ever heard of H2S? The ground terrain reading radar that the RAF utilised to considerable effect in it's night raids? Ever heard of the USAAF using H2X? Guess what H2X was? SImple, the British H2S system. The US had nothing that could match it, so they adopted it, something they kept/keep very quiet about for some odd reason, I think it is called NIH syndrome- NOT INVENTED HERE SYNDROME! The USAAF also adopted RAF tactics by fire bombing Japanese cities.
There is something strangely beautiful and compelling about British World War II aircraft. Really, a sort of timelessness that somehow makes them seem almost contemporary. This fine video shows off the Avro Lancaster in all its true majestic elegance. A fine piece of camera-work as well. Don't forget the photographer!
I was talking with my grandma the other day about the war (she's 86) and she told me about the bombers flying overhead at night. I showed her this video. She burst into tears and thanked me. Had the opportunity to explore the guts of a lancaster in Hamilton, Ont. A few weeks later I was on the beach north of Wasaga Beach and a Lancaster flew along the shoreline really low. The sound was amazing.
It made my friends and I reflect on our good fortune, because there was a time that you wouldn't stop and admire the sight of a bomber making it's way over your home.
I adore this plane. Good old british engenering. I have had the privalage to (not fly) buy walk inside a flying lancaster! soon im going in menfis bell =] God bless the U.K!!
wow.. i wonder.. when in world war, lots of this Lancaster fly together.. and the sound ... will 100% scare the crap out of the people down on the ground..
Last year my grandfather passed away leaving me a knowledge of what he faced flying countless missions over Germany without ever knowing if he would make it back alive.
